or are "the rules" not this simple:
- Murder = Bad
- Don't Murder

Period...? There is NO excuse for cold-blooded murder. If you do it, you are broken.

This simple fact should stand so starkly outside of any possible external influence (video game or otherwise), that it's frankly just silly.

I agree with the no accountability sentiment. I'm sick of this trend.

MMORPGs not as fun Jun 3, 2004, 18:27

You can't dismiss the argument that if someone isn't having fun playing a game, the game isn't fun. Like it or not this is a general sentiment of the wider gaming public.

Why are MMOs held to a lower standard by the people that play them, than say a console game? Just because there are lots of people online...? it's time we get over that hump.

To everyone who says MMORPGs are not their cup of tea, I hope what you mean is you're not having fun playing them. If there was a game that actually was as engaging as the non-MMO games you do enjoy, the monthly fee is hardly a stumbling block, and it does allow a level of ongoing updates which you cannot realistically have in non-subscription games.

I think the heart of the problem is that the majority of the current offerings just do not offer the accessibility and fun factor that the broad gaming community is looking for, without significant investment. But I think that trend is beginning to change... MMOs are getting to the fun immediately, and getting past the annoyances and hangups of the 1st generation.

Anyway, just randomly rambling.

Cool! I'm really looking forward to this, really enjoyed the original and the expansion Ahriman's Gift. Definitely a different twist on the RTS scene.

Maybe the apocalypse doesn't happen for a while yet.

The key word is "post-apocalypse"... I wonder how many years it would take for mutant foliage to grow on Earth after civilization destroyed itself? Hmmm...

I'll gladly pay a monthly fee to keep the stupid Counter-Strike intelligence style bastards out of my game.

Word! Planetside was a much better experience in that regard than any off-the-shelf FPS. Not to mention not having to surf for a good reliable server to play on.

an electronic treadmill that ultimately gets them nowhere

as opposed to... other video games which... get you somewhere?

Yep, pay to play will likely die just like HBO and Showtime did on television. Why pay when you get awesome shows for FREE... like Jag, Reba and CSI:SUV:MIA:DOA:POS?

its nowhere near that expensive to run game servers 24/7... most of it is profit, around 70% of that monthly fee

HA HA HA HA HA HA! Don't we all wish!

Seriously... where did our education system fail in that people can't do basic math anymore?

Here are some things that 10-15 bucks is about equivalent to:
- 1 movie ticket + 1 popcorn (MAYBE)... ~2 hours entertainment.
- ~the cost of one music CD or DVD... 1 to 2 hours entertainment
- about 2 hours of a minimum wage job... ~2 hours of, well 2 hours
- lunch... ~1 hour
- half the money a kid charges to mow 1 single lawn... ~1 hour
- a fee to a game with continuous upgrades, in-game support (what's the last free online game you played that had that?), and 24/7 NOC monitoring of the service. even the most casual player will play for at least 6-8 hours a month, some people put in well over 100 hours a month.

Is that a good exchange rate? You tell me.

Now... how much does it cost to maintain a game the size of EQ (not even to mention a Lineage which dwarfs it)? Let's see, a 24/7 staff of highly trained(=expensive) network engineers monitoring *international* ops, a full time development team of 50+ people, a 24/7 support team of hundreds, ongoing marketing, PR and advertising costs (ever placed a magazine ad? try it)? Do you even have a clue what that costs?

Yet the same people who complain about a 15 buck fee for an online game will happily plop down 20 bucks for the latest <insert today's popstar here> album, which promptly goes in the trash a month later when said icon is no longer cool. Oh wait, forgot... music should be free now to...

Yes... everyone else should spend their blood sweat and tears slaving on creations that will entertain me, but I shouldn't have to pay for it.

I love the internet... *wipes tear from eye*

(i'm not bitter :P)

I had a lot of fun playing CoH in early betas... can't wait to check it out in release (when I actually have free time again). I thought I wouldn't like it because I'm not really that big of a superhero comics guy (especially silver ageish stuff), but the character creation is so amazingly flexible I was able to create my own pint-sized ninja (i *am* a saturday kung fu theatre guy). The gameplay was fast paced and fun right off the bat. Even if you don't like superheros, you should check this game out if for nothing else but how cool the character creation is. Good job Cryptic!

Now I have a smacktalk excuse if they manage to beat the Avs in a game this series.

Seriously though, it's pretty cool they are using the DVR technology like that already, pretty smart.

Woo+Metroid... I can imagine it now...

Samus is pointing a missle at a Metroid, Mother Brain is pointing brain goo at Samus, and Metroid is pointing a tentacle at Mother Brain. Then a nurse runs in and screams "SAVE THE BABIES!!!"
