I used to think the same way, that is "no way am I paying a monthly fee to play a game". Then I tried a couple for kicks (DAOC held my interest and cash the longest), and it's funny I don't care anymore. When you think about it, 13 bucks is less than seeing a movie if you so much as buy a pop to drink with it. That's 2 hours of entertainment, vs. how many hours do you play your favorite game a month? 10, 20 40? I know some people that play over 150 hours a month in some games, so clearly it's cost effective entertainment for them.
I do think it's a bit silly to charge a full retail price for a subscription game, simply because the publisher is discouraging potential long term subscribers from ever even trying their product. And in some places, like Korea, you can go pay a cheap hourly fee at a cafe and try out lots of games, a much better way of doing things I think.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to Planetside because I'd like to see how they tackle FPS in a persistent world, at least it's something different right? And as far as I know, Advanced Dessert Cooking is not a skill in it...
