Terrain in DOOM 3 engine from the get-go May 23, 2005, 17:56

The DOOM 3 engine has always supported outdoor terrain. id said the reason for not having huge outdoor areas in DOOM 3 was a design decision, and was not based on limitations the engine had. The first time D3 was shown at E3 the opening scene in the realtime demo was a vast martian landscape with buildings and everything, all to scale.

The Megatexture technology is cool, but from what I understand Quake 4 doesn't use it.

This is about the earth invasion before invading the Strogg in Quake 2, so I think the technology makes sense.

Also, it's hard to tell how far away the tank is from the marines. While the game is 3D, the screensho is 2D, so depth perception is a bit off. Judging by the machine gun turret on the top of the tank, I think it looks pretty good

I like the idea of fighting by moonlight... headlights blaring, massive lighting effects from massive firefights in the dark Should rock.

I hope the sniper class (assumign there is one) has a rail gun

This from someone who supports a party of fascist and hatemongers

Hate-mongers? Fascists? How?

When the one side that doesn't represent the other and consistently works to oppress and destroy those people, then yes. I think it is best for everyone involved. If people like you had it your way slavery and every other social injustice would still be alive and well today.

Well, technically speaking, Republicans were in the white house when slavery was abolished. Also, different sides typically don't represent each other. That's why they're called sides.

It's a question of degrees. The lesser of two evils is still the lesser evil. The choice may not be a desirable one but it beats the alternative

A lot of people who voted for Bush feel this way. Why can't you accept that their opinion is valid? Isn’t it just as valid as yours?

Do you think all the bad vibes have magically just gone away? What changed between today and yesterday that you makes you think things aren't going to get worse as time progresses? The fact is things are going to get worse. Count on it.

I think you want it to get worse. You're counting on it getting worse. Well, what happens if Iraq becomes a successful democracy? What happens if Al Qaeda is basically wiped off the face of the earth? What happens if you end up being wrong? I know that's hard for you to imagine, but you have to at least allow the possibility that you could be very wrong.

Everything I've ever said is mostly true

Can we just deal with the truth, please? You just admitted that you're spinning.

I thought the economy and the assault on peoples civil and human rights by the Bush administration had something to do with it as well.

The economy is improving. I also disagree with the Patriot Act, but like you said, we have to pick the lesser of two evils, right?

Today you see that the 48% of the people who did vote for someone that their votes don't matter.

Actually, they do matter. Their voices were heard and their ballots counted. They lost, but that doesn't mean it was in vain. This is just how every election works: everyone votes; one side wins.

Josh, ZigZang, Spanker, Plissken, they have a collective IQ which still isn't in the triple digits if you double it, and their collective education isn't in the double digits if you double it. They give new meaning to "bottom of the barrel". It would be funny if they weren't so pathetic.

You would be fun to argue with if you weren't so rude. My IQ is 148.

It is just like someone who thinks the way you do to try to discredit someone's beliefs based on their intelligence, or lack there of. Weren't you arguing a few pages ago about how not everyone voted so the election is false? It's free speech and equal rights for everyone, right? Because you aren't acting like you really think that's the way it should be.

Speaking of equal rights for everyone, shouldn't you be allowed to make as much money as you want? Or is how much money you have a right too? If people can't get more money than they have, what motivation is there for driving the economy forward?

Of course there are lots of spoilers. DUMB! You see all kinds of things that give you clues to other things.

It's no different than watching a documentary on the making of a film before it's released.

The reason HL2 was gonna suck on NVidia cards was because of they way the 5x series handled DX9. But I think those issues have been fixed with the 6x series, so I think it will run HL2 just fine (I'm sure Valve is not too happy about this since they hate NVidia).

Here's what I wish: I wish that a graphics card company would try to under-cut their competitor. Frankly, it would be a smart move for ATI because NVidia has a much larger fan base, and ATIs drivers suck (I don't care if they're "getting better." I have issues with every new version). If ATI dropped the price on all their cards by $100, they would get a lot more respect for all their sloppy coding.

As a whole, I think both companies suck. A company that is HONEST needs to design a kickass GPU so that we don't have to deal with jerks like ATI and NVidia cheating on benchmarks and slipping confidential game information to push their product.

Music is about opinion. there's nothing more to it. Joebob doesn't have to like what Jimbob likes, but typically Joebob's favorite musician isn't lacking in talent just because Jimbob doesn't like that artist.

I don't like country music, but I can see that a lot of talent and hard work goes into their music, just as much as Tool or Metalica put into theirs. And while I don't like most rap music, I think that their lyrics can be some of the best out there. They string words together in a way that you don't typically get from other music genres.

I wouldn't call Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears musicians... they're like Las Vegas entertainers. But from a music standpoint, where the artist or group plays instruments and writes lyrics, just because they don't put out that specific sound or style that you like doesn't mean they suck.

The Quake 3 engine license price will drop once they start licensing the DOOM 3 engine. but I imagine the UT license price will also drop because of this. As far as DOOM 3 licensing is concerned? I bet it goes for atleast $350k, if not 500k.

Creston: you have seen the light. And don't think PC Gamer gave DOOM 3 such a high score because it's an id title, because they gave Quake 3 Team Arena a 68%.

Rock Climber: according to Todd Hollenshead, id still makes most of their money off of game sales, not licensed engines. Remember, John Carmack had his Ferarri after the first DOOM, not the second. Oh, and they only included 4 players because they didn't want to take the time to make the game work with any more players than that. nobody makes a 4 player deathmatch game because that's the way they want it.

To be honest, I think Stalker looks boring. Who wants to fight radioactive dogs? The E3 demonstration did not impress me at all. The animations seemed very poor.

I think secondary fire modes on every gun is bigtime retarded. Guns don't do that. It's different if you have a grenade launcher on a machine gun, or if you have different fire modes such as automatic, 3 shot burst and semi-auto. But a rocket launbcher or plasma gun doing something completely different if you press another button does not make any sense at all. Guns cannot do that. It's just mind boggling to me how people can think that's a good idea when it completely kills any immersion. It makes it feel more like a game and less like real life. Very hokey in my opinion.

Another rant I have on the Unreal series (which is what people are talking about when they mention secondary fire modes because every Unreal weapon has that) is that it took away a lot of skill elements and replaced them with arcade elements. What I'm talking about here is The double-tap strafe jump and the double-jump. How, may I ask, does a person jump when in mid-air?

These, to me, are not advancements in gameplay. Advancements to me would be real-time lighting, being able to alter the environment, per-poly hit detection, and an uber physics engine that lets you tackle other players, push them off of ledges, etc. Also, a complex hand-to-hand fighting system would be nice.

Advancing the genre does not involve getting rid of the old weapons. It doesn't make sense because the machine gun, shotgun, rocket launcher and sniper rifle are all staples of every arsenal. these weapons SHOULD be in every FPS gae, just like they are. To advance the genre, you need to add technology that improves how the game is played to make it more realistic, like in the ways I mentioned above. Being able to blowup a pillar and have a roof come crashing down, or being able to trip someone with your leg as they come around the corner. Things that we can do in real life but can't do in games, that's the revolutionary step. DOOM 3 is taking some of those steps by implementing per-poly hit detection and real-time lighting. People say "the engine will be great, but I want gameplay" as if these features don't effect anything. But these features effect the gameplay in a very important and revolutionary way. These are things that people should think a little harder about. Not stupid things like secondary weapon modes. Guns are not Transformers.

C'mon Kobalt, like you would allow yourself to be seen at Quakecon anyway.

I think Quakecon has a No-Dicks-Allowed policy that is strictly enforced.

People paid $60 for Warcraft III. Far Cry was deffinately a bargain at $40. I would've paid $60 for Far Cry =P. Most big-title games start at $50.

Every brand new console game is $50. Atleast the PC has some budget games. But $5 above the normal price for a new game is not that big of a deal to me. It's like paying the extra $1 to get tickets on Fandango.com instead of having to wait in line.

The games that are typically priced lower are the games that don't offer the complete package, e.g. Battlefield series. But MMORPGs have a $50 price tag, so do most FPS games (Call of Duty, Quake series, Half-Life, Wolfenstein, Jedi Knight series, etc.).

I never liked Quake 2 single player. It lacked the frightening atmosphere that Quake 1 had. Also, Quake 1 was more fast paced. Quake 2 had the best deathmatch of all time, however. Even though Quake III Arena took over with it's super fast pace and awsome jump pads, my brother and I always go back to Quake 2 when we need a little 1 on 1 action. The elevators add a trap and death-from-above element that Quake 3 doesn't have. Also, the deathmatch maps in Quake 2 are the best. The Edge, Tokay Towers, Warehourse... they all rock.

Quake 2 Rocket Arena also has the best maps. Sunbaked, anyone?
