Not familiar with the game industry, are you.

On the contrary, young padawan, I've been in gaming almost my entire life, nearly all 37 years of it. My first experience was playing on my Atari5200 when I was around 4. Then I got a Tandy CoCo3 when I was 5, then it was on to SEGA's stable of consoles until 1992 when I entered the modern PC gaming world with a 486SX/25. Just because I'm pissed that something happened again that shouldn't happen doesn't mean this is the first time I've ever encountered it. Never judge a book by it's cover...or a poster by one post...uh, as it were...

Alienware can build a fine machine, just an expensive one. We in general are more cost conscious. His is probably donated, I'd take an donated Alienware system, wouldn't you? Perhaps donated and endorsed (paid).

The system was bought with cash money via donations to his channel. You can see his video about it here. He grabbed a triple monitor setup with it as well. He mentions that a lot of people gave him flack for going with Alienware instead of a custom build. Yes, it's a nice system and it's plenty powerful in it's own right, but still, a custom build, with the same amount of money he spent on this, would have been quite the beast indeed. It just seems like a waste or being lazy to me. Push a button and boom, you have a bitchin' rig. No fuss, no mess. I understand the appeal, don't get me wrong. Just, as a system builder, it's crazy to grab an 'off the shelf' system when there are so many positives to a self-built custom machine...

Yup, runnin' the same as you had, an HD7850/1gb (XFX Ghost Core)...I know it's the lack of video RAM that's the problem. I have the same issue in a lot of other games with texture streaming bringing everything to a stuttering, grinding halt. But in ARK, I have to set options so damn low that the game looks like it came out in 2000 instead of 2014! That, IMO, is absolutely ridiculous, low VRAM or not. I'd give it a pass for being an 'Early Access' alpha but they've had plenty of time to do some optimization and I haven't seen a damn bit of difference since this whole thing started. Ah, not like it's the only thing I have to play, though, so I should probably stop bitching...

Pretty obvious, even from a mundane business standpoint, that Ego aren't gonna just keep milking this creaky cow until she tips over dead from exhaustion. I've always assumed that they had something cooking on the back burner after Rebirth was released. If they use Rebirth as a staging and testing ground for a real Elite killer, then more power to them! If they're able to learn and avoid the mistakes they made with Rebirth while grabbing some of that original magic, I'll be one happy Teladi!

Yeah, I've been a supporter of Ego since the very, very beginning, back in '97 when X was nothing more than an awesome tech demo playing on poorly configured Compaq Presario P200's in Best Buy. I still remember that day, the first day I saw X and had to know what it was and had to get a computer that could handle it. So with a P2/400. 128mb of RAM and both a Diamond Stealth S220 (Rendition) and Diamond Monster3D-2 3dfx Voodoo2 (8mb), I was ready...to wait until 2000 when it came out. In any case, I was hooked from then on.

Still, Rebirth was when I stopped. I couldn't stand the fact of staying in ONE ship the whole time, nor all the little glitches, the fact that they'd thrown just about everything away they'd learned over the last 12 years. No, I stayed with X3:TC/AP w/XRM -mod and I'm happy. I'll gladly wait until Ego wakes up from their nightmare and does what everyone is waiting for them to do...

Seriously, I really enjoyed BF3's single-player...for what it was, anyway. I knew it didn't hold a candle to the norm (or what would be expected) but it kept my interest the whole ride. The air battle was well done, as was the tank battle. The conspiracy angle at the end was a little hamfisted but enjoyable. All in all, for what is was, it was good. I didn't complete BF4's single-player past the second mission because it kept locking up when you get to the roof of the building to 'get to the choppa'...oh well...

Still you're not right. There's no way, even with unlimited funds and manhours that you can complete the game being shown in that trailer (assuming you mean the game, with game mechanics, and not just a movie, which I think you do) in a year. If you believe that... you don't know what you're talking about. Plain and simple.

Are there games that could be completed in that amount of time? Of course. But not that one. Not that complexity. Not that level of fidelity. And again, I'm not a fan of this game, this is purely from the perspective of software. Hell screw the assets, I'm telling you the code wouldn't be right in that amount of time.

Sepharo, I'm not talking about the whole freakin' game in a year or year plus six months...I'm not crazy. What I'm saying is that there should have been either the equivalent of where we are NOW, ie. one free-roam map, Arena Commander, the Hangar and ArcCorp and Tutorial Map, in one year to a year and six. I don't think that's asking too much. In the video I was talking about, you see the beginning of Squadron42, the single-player component. You arrive on the ship, you get escorted around by an AI and then find yourself at the bridge or flight ops or whatever. You have some AI's talking and walking around, chit-chatting. In THREE+ years, THIS is all he has to show for the single-player to the public! A walk around. And even then, the AI were clipping into the scenery and the sound was off in a lot places. (Probably because of the positional audio). This is unacceptable after three years and nearly $100 MILLION!

I never said that the whole thing should be done by now or in a year. That's crazy. I know it's not possible. But a level and walk-around with a hangar and maybe a tutorial, in a year? Yeah, for multiple studios and $100 million? Yeah, definitely...

Think about this for a second...how long did it take Double-Fine or inXile to get their backed games up and running? They've proven that they have the motivation and the will to do a game the right way. I can promise that they had working builds within twelve months. I'd bet my fucking life on it. RSI isn't one studio and they have access to several magnitudes more money than these same devs, yet couldn't buckle down and make the game on a given time schedule. Why does there even have to be more than one studio producing this game? The studios were put in place for the sole reason of getting this game made, yet it hasn't helped development that I can see. They didn't bring out builds any faster than any other dev could.

'Throwing more programmers at it isn't going to help'. No, maybe not, but having more people working further down the pipeline, in art, sound and AI could. Instead, they wasted it on fancy commercials, CONS, weekly videos and podcasts, a super fancy website.

When id went to work on a game, you heard almost nothing from them for years. 'It's done when it's done' was the motto. Yeah, Roberts has people banging on the doors asking when it's going to be finished, when this part or that is coming out but that doesn't mean he has to constantly cater to them. If he said, 'Listen, I know you guys want to know about progress, but we're working hard and we'll have something to show you at E3 next year', like nearly every other dev has done, there wouldn't be any problems. Some disappointment, yes. Rumors, maybe. But we'd wait. No, instead he's out there, practically on a permanent publicity tour! When HALO2 was shown at E3, everything they showed had to be scrapped. It didn't work. But Bungie did it and still got the game out in time. There's no drive like that here. There's no fire under Robert's ass to get it done yesterday. And we know what happens when a producer/director gets free reign on a project. One need only look to the Star Wars prequels for that. Or, in the gaming world, ION Storm and Daikatana...or, as I mentioned before, anything involving Peter Molyneaux...

This should have been done at the end of year one

    literally impossible, stop talking

Just because your expectations and standards have been pushed so far down by year after year of mediocre triple-AAA releases as to be microscopic at this point does not mean mine are! I was around to see what a real developer with heart, drive and vision could do in a three to four year time frame. Newer 'gamers' are so beaten down they seem to be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome! Just good enough is the new 'Triple A'-game. The only place where innovation and design are law is with Indies and history texts of the video game industry. Don't tell me it couldn't be done in a year. It could. If he wanted it done, it could have been done. He didn't. He's never been able to recapture that spark that started him with Wing Commander 1 and 2. I'm curious if he had anything to do with Privateer at all because that game was genius. Then again, like Strike Commander, it took almost forever for it to come out.

We typically see tech demos and whole single level concepts by the one year mark. Is this video not something like that? I didn't see any gameplay, except for the ability to walk around.

The crunch is industry standard now. This is why I say that it could be done in a year. Because a good amount of development is done right before and during the crunch. If that work was spread out over the first year instead of the last six months, look what could have been accomplished. That's my reasoning for saying it. So, you tell me why it couldn't be done in a year, a year and a half MAX?

    =-Rigs-=

No he was right, you have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm not a fan of this game. I don't think these guys are ever going to complete what they've set out to do... But getting out what they did in the amount of time that they did, buggy mess it may be, is pretty impressive. Throwing more programmers at a project like this doesn't help. Also they aren't cutting corners, these are complex systems and they're doing them the hard way as far as I can tell. This isn't making a 2D game, cookie cutter assets, borrowed physics, algo generated, or any other normal time/money saving effort. Even simple games and developers who use shortcuts take years to make this kind of progress.

"I didn't see any gameplay, except for the ability to walk around."

Assuming I'm not misunderstanding, you're talking about alpha 2.0 right?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQzX2xjGoM8
There is a lot more going on there than just walking around a hangar... Isn't that where they were 2 years ago? Look at the milestone post made earlier in these comments.

The video I was basing my opinion on is in my second-to-last reply, if you had looked...here, since I'm a nice guy: https://youtu.be/_8YkjRs-S8w?t=54

I don't know what I'm talking about...more like you have no clue what I'm saying because you couldn't do an ounce of effort and figure it out. Instead, you'd rather waste it by calling me incompetent. Again, because my opinion differs from yours (and his) doesn't disqualify what I've said.
