Still you're not right. There's no way, even with unlimited funds and manhours that you can complete the game being shown in that trailer (assuming you mean the game, with game mechanics, and not just a movie, which I think you do) in a year. If you believe that... you don't know what you're talking about. Plain and simple.

Are there games that could be completed in that amount of time? Of course. But not that one. Not that complexity. Not that level of fidelity. And again, I'm not a fan of this game, this is purely from the perspective of software. Hell screw the assets, I'm telling you the code wouldn't be right in that amount of time.

Sepharo, I'm not talking about the whole freakin' game in a year or year plus six months...I'm not crazy. What I'm saying is that there should have been either the equivalent of where we are NOW, ie. one free-roam map, Arena Commander, the Hangar and ArcCorp and Tutorial Map, in one year to a year and six. I don't think that's asking too much. In the video I was talking about, you see the beginning of Squadron42, the single-player component. You arrive on the ship, you get escorted around by an AI and then find yourself at the bridge or flight ops or whatever. You have some AI's talking and walking around, chit-chatting. In THREE+ years, THIS is all he has to show for the single-player to the public! A walk around. And even then, the AI were clipping into the scenery and the sound was off in a lot places. (Probably because of the positional audio). This is unacceptable after three years and nearly $100 MILLION!

I never said that the whole thing should be done by now or in a year. That's crazy. I know it's not possible. But a level and walk-around with a hangar and maybe a tutorial, in a year? Yeah, for multiple studios and $100 million? Yeah, definitely...

What about something way back...I'm talking Romans or maybe Spartans (the real ones, not the HALO ones)...maybe a play on 300? The Crusades? Anything during the Roman Empire. Or even the U.S. Revolutionary War...or Civil War for that matter...

There's so much possibility and they keep rehashing the same shit with a better paintjob...

Think about this for a second...how long did it take Double-Fine or inXile to get their backed games up and running? They've proven that they have the motivation and the will to do a game the right way. I can promise that they had working builds within twelve months. I'd bet my fucking life on it. RSI isn't one studio and they have access to several magnitudes more money than these same devs, yet couldn't buckle down and make the game on a given time schedule. Why does there even have to be more than one studio producing this game? The studios were put in place for the sole reason of getting this game made, yet it hasn't helped development that I can see. They didn't bring out builds any faster than any other dev could.

'Throwing more programmers at it isn't going to help'. No, maybe not, but having more people working further down the pipeline, in art, sound and AI could. Instead, they wasted it on fancy commercials, CONS, weekly videos and podcasts, a super fancy website.

When id went to work on a game, you heard almost nothing from them for years. 'It's done when it's done' was the motto. Yeah, Roberts has people banging on the doors asking when it's going to be finished, when this part or that is coming out but that doesn't mean he has to constantly cater to them. If he said, 'Listen, I know you guys want to know about progress, but we're working hard and we'll have something to show you at E3 next year', like nearly every other dev has done, there wouldn't be any problems. Some disappointment, yes. Rumors, maybe. But we'd wait. No, instead he's out there, practically on a permanent publicity tour! When HALO2 was shown at E3, everything they showed had to be scrapped. It didn't work. But Bungie did it and still got the game out in time. There's no drive like that here. There's no fire under Robert's ass to get it done yesterday. And we know what happens when a producer/director gets free reign on a project. One need only look to the Star Wars prequels for that. Or, in the gaming world, ION Storm and Daikatana...or, as I mentioned before, anything involving Peter Molyneaux...

Newer 'gamers' are so beaten down they seem to be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome! Just good enough is the new 'Triple A'-game. The only place where innovation and design are law is with Indies and history texts of the video game industry. Don't tell me it couldn't be done in a year. It could. If he wanted it done, it could have been done. He didn't. He's never been able to recapture that spark that started him with Wing Commander 1 and 2. I'm curious if he had anything to do with Privateer at all because that game was genius. Then again, like Strike Commander, it took almost forever for it to come out.

We typically see tech demos and whole single level concepts by the one year mark. Is this video not something like that? I didn't see any gameplay, except for the ability to walk around.

The crunch is industry standard now. This is why I say that it could be done in a year. Because a good amount of development is done right before and during the crunch. If that work was spread out over the first year instead of the last six months, look what could have been accomplished. That's my reasoning for saying it. So, you tell me why it couldn't be done in a year, a year and a half MAX?

=-Rigs-=

No he was right, you have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm not a fan of this game. I don't think these guys are ever going to complete what they've set out to do... But getting out what they did in the amount of time that they did, buggy mess it may be, is pretty impressive. Throwing more programmers at a project like this doesn't help. Also they aren't cutting corners, these are complex systems and they're doing them the hard way as far as I can tell. This isn't making a 2D game, cookie cutter assets, borrowed physics, algo generated, or any other normal time/money saving effort. Even simple games and developers who use shortcuts take years to make this kind of progress.

"I didn't see any gameplay, except for the ability to walk around."

Assuming I'm not misunderstanding, you're talking about alpha 2.0 right?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQzX2xjGoM8
There is a lot more going on there than just walking around a hangar... Isn't that where they were 2 years ago? Look at the milestone post made earlier in these comments.

The video I was basing my opinion on is in my second-to-last reply, if you had looked...here, since I'm a nice guy: https://youtu.be/_8YkjRs-S8w?t=54

I don't know what I'm talking about...more like you have no clue what I'm saying because you couldn't do an ounce of effort and figure it out. Instead, you'd rather waste it by calling me incompetent. Again, because my opinion differs from yours (and his) doesn't disqualify what I've said.

I'd just like to see five minutes of gameplay from Squadron42. Just gameplay, Could someone provide a link?

You've probably already seen this, but here is the opening of Sq 42. It's not gameplay in the sense of flying and shooting, but just a scripted scene of you walking around the Stanton.

It's impressive...until you remind yourself that it took three years just to get to this point. Then, not so much. This should have been done at the end of year one. Six months for the foundation, six months for the audio, voice capture, mapping and rudimentary AI. Granted one studio or an indie dev might take longer, but this is from multiple studios and nearly 'unlimited' money! And after three years we have...this. Like I said, it's impressive and I can't wait to play it but if it's to show progress, it's seriously underwhelming. The AI still clips through other objects! They couldn't do a run before the show and tighten down the AI paths?! C'mon. On top of that, Roberts should know every last nut and bolt of this game, from beginning to end. It's his baby, yet he doesn't seem to be sure of the layout of the Iridis (Stanton). The engine room is nice, but Mass Effect did the whole ship, plus an RPG around it in four years. THAT is impressive. This is...not so much. I think if he would just come clean that at the start they had no idea what they were doing, what they were going to do and didn't have anything but the faintest hint at a gameplan, people on discussion boards like here wouldn't be so hard on him. But to continually state that everything is going 'to plan' is bullshit when the release date keeps getting pushed back. First 2014, then 2015, now maybe not even 2016. Just be honest, Roberts. That's all we ask. Oh, and actually do what you say you're going to. We already have one Peter Molyneaux...

Its when people start assuming I'm really really old that would have me worried. And from the looks of it, I'd say some posters on this board who just shit on everything are probably in their 80's.

"pffft, you just don't GET it, the game is objectively AWFUL, it's a fucking war crime. the artists who make it should be lynched." -angry old man with kids on his lawn.

I'm cool with having fun, and being able to enjoy this ridiculous age of technological wonders that we're living in. When I was 8 years old the NES wasn't even out yet, I was still gaming on those 1-game LCD display pocket games which was basically an LCD watch with some basic logic. If 8 year-old me could see what 33-year old me would be playing, my brain would probably explode from happiness. I'm glad that I'm still able to channel some of that 8-year old joy, which apparently has dried up for most posters on here.

Heh, I've always imagined having something like a Bluescon (because, why not? Everything has a -con now!), with everyone from the boards meeting up for some LAN beatdowns and Blue showing up in a Gordon Freeman HEV-getup, crowbar in-hand, waving to us, saying nothing and promptly running after a paper-mache headcrab...then the meet and greet and everyone has a heart attack when they find out that the person you imagined in your head on the board is actually nothing like them in reality...oh and a lot of people are a lot younger or older than you assumed, like my 38-year-old 'get the hell off my lawn'-self...

Oh why? Why?! Why did you have to say that? I could have let it go had you not put that little bomb on the end... Sigh

Ok, you know what Star Wars needed, gaming-wise? An epic tie-in to the Force Awakens. Not a direct port of the movie, mind you. No, something like a prequel, something to set up this movie that we know almost nothing about. Something that is 'canon', in-universe, that explains the last 24 years between Endor and FA. Yes, we have comics, we have books...I want an RPG! Give me KOTOR in pre-third-trilogy form! That, my friend, is what Star Wars needed right now. Not some pretty bimbo flaunting her wares like some Mos Eisley reject that will give you a night or two of fun and a lifetime of regret. The pull is strong with this one right now because it's new and it's something new that is Star Wars, but I promise that after the movie comes out and everyone knows the storyline, say a year from now, this game will be all but forgotten and laughed at...much like Evolve. Big hype, big letdown.

'Course if they want to throw in 1313 to take my mind off things, I'll be more than happy to oblige...

Don't read reviews. There's a an eight hour trial, download it and try it. Trust me, it's not that bad. Yeah, it's not Crysis graphics-wise or have the graphical flair of Freelancer, but it has an awesome dedicated community and it's gameplay has been thoroughly vetted (no pun intended), tested and aged to a mature, near balanced state. They have capships, stations, and it's first-person or third-person style combat, like Freelancer or Freespace. The game is constantly updated and added to and the devs are a very dedicated group. There are some things I'd change, sure, and it could always be improved, like any other MMO, but it's great as is, too. It has a rough but serviceable tutorial as well. Just give it a try. On PC is costs nothing to give it a chance. If it's not for you, so be it. But at least it's another option aside from the borefest of EVE...

VendettaOnline is such a better game. Not prettier or well-known, but better playing and more rewarding, gameplay-wise. Plus, it's pretty easy for newbies with a Freelancer fetish...

Note however, that if you play on iOS, it's not 'free'. This is a contention I have with the VO devs. They say 'free' on their site but when you go to get the mobile app (the whole game on mobile, just as on PC), you find it's $0.99 for a trial and then it's either $1 or $9 per month (depending on who you ask). I haven't personally gotten the iOS version of VO for this very reason, it's not clear what the 'free' in 'free' constitutes. The PC version is a free 8 hour trial and then $9.99 per month. The only issue with that is there is no way of earning that in game like EVE. Still, the game is really good and I highly recommend it!

How am I being 'weird' by having a critical opinion? I'm not cussing people out, calling them 'retards' or 'faggots' or whatever. I'm not personally attacking anyone. I'm not taking any criticism of AMD 'personal', I've just found, in the past, that many people who have a negative opinion of AMD/ATI haven't actually used a Radeon card at all. They just go by news stories and forum posts and all of a sudden, they're 'experts'.

Listen, I'm not saying you, in particular, don't know what you're talking about and don't have 'experience'. My post wasn't directed at you personally. I'm not chomping at the bit, trying to bash my opinion into any orifice in people's skulls that it'll fit. On the contrary, I'm actually extremely calm. I'm sorry that that doesn't seem to show in my posts. If someone says something about a subject I have a lot of time and effort spent on, I'm going to be critical of it. I'm going to call into question whether that person knows what they're saying or if they're just trolling. I'm an ATI (and, grudgingly, by extension, AMD) fanboy, I've stated this many times. No, this doesn't give me free reign to say anything, attack anyone and generally be a zealot. My stance has actually moderated quite a bit from the past. I try to be understanding, and as you said, reasonable. I ask questions, I state facts and I refute assumptions. I don't attack people. (well, ok, lets say I certainly try not to, I'm not perfect ) I see the nVidia vs. AMD debate as more like being the fan of a football team (or any sports team really). You're passionate about your team, you trumpet their strengths and kinda just push their weaknesses under the rug. I've never said AMD was perfect, they definitely are not. Their CPU business is shit. Their SSD and PSU businesses are shit. But the videocards...the videocards I like. Probably because it's really ATI and their design foundations and not really AMD's. I don't like nVidia's way of doing business and I'm still sore over 3dfx all these years later. You think I'm bad with AMD? You should have seen me in the 3dfx days!

So, wait wait wait...because I'm passionate and adamant about AMD (ATI) video cards and try to correct misunderstandings that arise because people state opinions without having the personal experience to backup their claims, you can't take me seriously?! How is pointing out the positives and difference in video cards any different from doing the same with a game? I don't understand your reasoning, Verno. But whatever, if that's how you feel, so be it. I'm not going to change what I say because you have problems accepting that someone is passionate about a product that you have no interest in...It doesn't make it any less worthy because it means nothing to you.
