Is anyone still playing this? It got mediocre reviews when it was released and had a lot of competition in the 4x space.

What competition did it really even have?

The original Sword of the Stars is still pretty much the best space 4x out there. No one else is doing anything like it even now.

Wait, what?! You're serious? Orogogus beat me to it but just off the top of my head...

Stellaris
Gal Civ 3
Distant Worlds Universe
Star Ruler 2: Wake of the Heralds
StarDrive 2
Starpoint Gemini Warlords
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion

and then some older ones...

Gal Civ 2
Sins of a Solar Empire
Armada 2526 Supernova!
Space Empires 4, 5 and Starfury
Star Trek: Birth of the Federation (an underrated masterpiece that doesn't get enough attention or respect)
MOO 1 and 2 (3 does not exist, no matter what anyone says!)
Spaceward Ho! (personal fav!)
STARS! (another shareware personal fav)
VGA Planets (really showing my age with this BBS space strategy game)
the original Star Ruler and StarDrive...

C'mon, man, Google it! There's enough 4x's out there that it makes triple-X's jealous!

Oh, let's see:

They have a cannon which costs $800,000 to fire which they can't afford.

Experts feel it has a good chance of just flipping over if the right wave hits it.

They cost four BILLION dollars per fucking ship.

It can't really defend itself from missile attacks. (in fact, I've seen articles say that it basically has NO air defenses at all, and thus can only function as part of a battlegroup along with several MUCH cheaper Arleigh Burke class destroyers. You know, the thing it was supposed to replace.)

In short, it's a typical military fucking boondoggle. Just throw more and more and more and more and more and more fucking money against it. Meanwhile, our entire road infrastructure is collapsing and the majority of it will be undriveable by 2045 because there is no money to spend on it, all of America is bankrupted by the cost of healthcare and we have no single dime to spend on teachers, so class sizes now routinely surpass 35 or even 40 children per class.

But yeah, let's give the fucking military EVEN MORE MONEY.

Yeah, but a lot of that wasn't during the R&D phase of the program...not that it really matters, money is money regardless of what 'phase' the project is in. I totally agree with you, though, I just wasn't that much aware that the destroyers were in the same boat as the F-35's. I haven't had much chance to keep track of the history, I'll have to do some reading this weekend on it and get up to speed. Blagodaryu and Dasvidaniya, Comrade Creston!

Yeah, socialized medicine sucks. You guys pay $3500 a year on average for it? Barring any major problems your insurance may not cover. You know what I pay? Nothing. You know what everyone else pays in a socialized democracy? Nothing. Oh sure, it comes out of our taxes, but we choose to spend in on important shit like that. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad how right-wing extremists like you guys think something like socialized medicine is pure evil at several billion a year, but wasting a trillion dollars a year - still socialism - on the military industrial complex is just fine. Christ, you clowns don't know whether you're coming or going.

Riiight. Whatever, Cutter. How am I a 'right wing extremist'? I think you're fucking delusional and didn't read anything that I wrote (per usual)!

Any hopes for real steps towards universal healthcare are dead.

Repealing Obamacare will be the best thing Trump does.

- Before Obamacare, I had health insurance at a cost of ~ 280 dollars a month. 500 deductible, 3500 out of pocket max.
- In the three years of Obamacare, my premium went from 280 to 300 to 400 to 720 (what it would be next year if I kept it.)
- My deductible went from 500 to 1000 to 1500 to 2500.
- I don't even know how much my out of pocket max next year would be. It was 6800 this last year. It'll likely be 10 grand or so. I just quit reading the letter after it said 720 dollars a month in premium.

(This isn't even counting the fact my medications have nearly doubled in price too.)

For the majority of Americans, it'll just be cheaper to pay the penalty. (You know, let's punish them for being TOO FUCKING POOR TO AFFORD HEALTH INSURANCE.) Yeah, that's a great system. Too bad we're losing it!

Sorry, not meant as an attack against you personally, but Obamacare is fucking bankrupting the people in this country who are unfortunate enough to not have healthcare through their employer.

Where's the upvote/like button?! BLUE!

I'll second this to my grave. People that know me know the absolute disaster that I've had to go through with fucking Obamacare. I spent more time and effort on this damn thing for both me and my elderly mother than I'd really care to admit. Seriously, I've laid awake at night thinking about it! I've been kept awake at night because of healthcare insurance. That's despicable. I decided to pay the penalty (don't EVEN get me started!) but my mother just can't, she needs the insurance and they are making her pay for every last bit of it plus punishing her by paying $1 a month because she didn't sign up before they told her she had to. This is absolutely true. They sent a payment book and everything, for $1 a month! And you can't pay it by the year! Oh, no, it has to be sent in once a month. And getting someone that actually knows what;s going on? Damn near impossible. I've never wanted to strangle so many people in one day in my life before. Just endless misery. Finally the premiums were just too much and there was no choice in my area, ONE provider. So of course they took advantage of it and gouged the hell out of their customers. Who are they going to flee to?

What a shit show. I will NOT have any problem putting Obamacare in the ground. Unless Trump institutes something even worse...

Yeah, while that was not cool, it's somewhat understandable. She's an old lady, she's been 24-7 on the campaign trail for 1.5 years. She was exhausted, and after polls showed her with a healthy lead watching her firewall crumble one by one as the night progressed must have been extremely traumatic. Rumor is that she was in shock.

From what I was told, they kept telling the people gathered there that someone would be coming out 'shortly' to say a few words. At almost the same time, they were telling the press that they wouldn't be saying anything for the rest of the night. If Hillary wasn't able to do it, someone from the campaign could have at least got up there and told them something. (Hell, give Bill his sax and push him out there!) That's like having a big wedding, inviting everyone you know and then eloping. Very inconsiderate, especially to people that had volunteered a ton of their own time to the campaign.

I'm still a little numb. I didn't have a preference and after really taking a hard look at all the candidates, I couldn't agree on any of them. Honestly, I thought Jill Stein looked the best, in the 'could do the least amount of damage' kind of way. I keep seeing the headlines and it's just like being in the Twilight Zone. I'd imagine that Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Trevor Noah and Steven Colbert are pretty disappointed. Noah pushed hard for a Hilary vote, that was evident the last few weeks. He went from criticizing both of them to just criticizing Trump to advocating for Clinton. And you could see Colbert was really deflated last night toward the end of his 'special'. No more laughs, no more smiling and joking. I think they thought they didn't need to worry.

Funny thing was I jokingly told my mother that I was considering going to New Zealand and she said that she'd always wanted to go. I never knew that. So I might actually take a trip there after all.

I'm willing to have an open mind on Trump as long as he doesn't go full asshat and start pushing other countries around. I'm worried about his connections to Russia and I'm still very curious where he's getting the $15 BILLION for the wall? Aside from that, let me say I thought it was extremely rude and immature for Hillary to leave all her supporters standing around all night and not say a word until this morning. Oh, my bad, I didn't realize a five year old game would require a 390x to run acceptably like it's previous three releases...I can run LE with over 100 mods without any noticeable problems whatsoever and yet with this I can't run it vanilla? No, it's not my 'ancient' video
card, the game is just buggy AF...

A 290 is what they recommend, pretty modest. The minimum is a 2GB 7870 which is again fairly modest. He's probably right, you're not close to recommended specs. Actually now that I checked you're even below the minimum system specs. Since specs don't often tell the whole story (yes I noticed you tried it on a 4870) I would also note that driver support for older cards tends to have problems at the 3+ year mark anyway. Manufacturers keep putting out the unified drivers but often ignore the compatibility issues that crop up with older cards because they prioritize customers with newer hardware. I have no crash issues at the same point on my HTPC downstairs which has a 290. Just the way of the industry.

If LE works with 100 mods on a card that old then I would consider yourself lucky and play that instead but you certainly won't be able to replicate that on this version and have run it stably.

That's actually what I've done. I shelved SE and went back to playing LE. I have all those mods running without any conflicts but it does slow down at times, especially when you can see far into the distance outside. I've got it turned down but as I said before, AMD cards seem to have some kind of issue with shadows and AA. I dunno. At least it runs good enough for my tastes, anyway. I was able to get the 4870 to run LE fine as well but it still chokes on SE at the same point. My friend just went ahead and purchased LE and is going to use mods to pad it out for the 'SE experience'. I realize these cards, including mine, aren't exactly cutting edge but neither is this game. You'd think after five years they could have streamlined the game some in order to get it to run on modest hardware. It seems to even have trouble on the PS4 and Xbone too.

Oh well, so much for that experiment... Pouting

Coming out of <Lurk Mode(tm)> to ask if anyone on AMD is having problems? I've spoken to, personally seen and have personally experienced a really nasty driver crash during the opening intro...stroll in the cart. Right as the one thief guy says the town he's from, at that exact point, every time, my driver crashes, usually taking the game with it. Friends of mine on my old 5770 and 4870 both have the same problem AND on my mother's A6 (HD6350), it also happens. Right now, I can't play it past this point...and yes, I've both updated AND fallen back on drivers, it doesn't seem to matter ATM...

=-Rigs-=

I haven't played further than the intro cave yet, but no problems for me so far. I have a 290x and 16.9.2 drivers.

Hmm...I was able to get by it on my 7850 by lowering some graphic options (especially shadows...AMD cards seem to have a hard time with shadows and AA for some reason) but both the 5770 and the 4870 are still encountering the same problem. I haven't tried the A6 (6350) again, as it was just for reference but I'll try lowering the options on that and see if that fixes it. Even with lowered options on the older cards, it still crashes at that exact point. Like to a fault. I dunno what's so special about that exact moment... Sigh

Well, at least I can play it now. It wasn't that big of a deal since I still have my modded 'Legendary' edition installed alongside. I have to admit that the new coloring of the sky makes the atmosphere feel a bit...warmer. Before it was nothing but grays and dark hues. It felt cold. With the oranges and yellows and reds in the sky when you come out of the cave, it feels different. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not, though. Skyrim had a certain...ambiance about it. Cold, hard...deadly.

EDIT: Maybe I spoke too soon...I did get into the game and played all the way to the outskirts of Whiterun but then I ran into some band of er...bandits in a field, they wanted to talk and when the prompt came up, I took the chance to go for a pee break (I'd spent like 30 mins chasing a reindeer tryin' to kill it with my bow with nothing to show for it) and when I came back, the game was minimized to my taskbar and I was looking at my desktop. I could hear the audio from the game but I couldn't get back into it and had to shut it down via Task Manager...ugh...a bit buggy, perhaps?

EDIT #2: Running it again, I came down the road to Whiterun, along the river, and ran into a small squad of soldiers escorting a Stormcloak prisoner. I stopped to talk to him (just to see if he had anything interesting to say) and I was given a prompt to set him free? <No> <Yes> <Free and Trade Items>

I selected <No>, I didn't want to rock the boat just yet and I can't take on three soldiers at once at Level 1 anyway. Didn't matter, I ended up dying after having to kill one anyway because the game seems to think I said <Yes> instead. Seriously?! Did no one test this!?

Also Blue, if all the bags went off and it has structural damage, Mrs might "feel" it tomorrow as the adreno wears off. Make sure to get her checked out if she feels crummy. Can have injuries unknown until bigger problems start.

As everyone else here, I'm glad that your S.O. is ok. Just the fact that it happened is enough to make anyone shaken up, not even mentioning going through the accident itself. I concur with the above, Mrs. Blue is probably going to be a might bit sore tomorrow and may want to get checked out just to be safe and at least take the day off and stay in bed. My Mom was in a very minor accident last year when some old guy (who really shouldn't have been driving at 92 years old!) slammed into the back of her girlfriends 2001 Dodge Ram 1500, shearing the trailer hitch and most of the bumper clean off and putting the guy into the tree line along our yard. They had been backing out of the driveway to go to lunch and had stopped, waiting for the guy to pass and he pretty much zeroed right in on the back of the truck. Between the truck bumper and the trees, there wasn't much left to the front of his newer Toyota sedan. He was fine, however and couldn't understand how he misjudged the very low-speed pass (he had been going like 20mph, we were in a housing development). When his son showed up, irate at him, we found that he'd done this a few times prior just not in such a severe way. (Which prompts anyone to cock their head doggy-style and wonder why he still had a license?!?) Anyway, back to my Mom. They had been wearing seat belts but my Mom had been sitting twisted around to see out the back of the truck to check for traffic when he hit and while she thought she was fine, the next week found her in a considerable amount of back and shoulder pain. She then spent a few months going to doctors and chiropractors for relief. She still has some discomfort and she still kicks herself in the rear for waiting and hurting instead of getting checked out.

Make sure to document everything and maybe write down what happened for future reference as time has a tendency to erase important details! Good luck to you both, I hope things turn out ok!

Because I have a dissenting opinion, I'm jamming it down everyone's throats?!? I...you know what, no. I'm not going any further with this. I had a response here but I erased it. I'm done arguing with a five year old.

However...
My response was totally on point which is why you're dissembling.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

If you're talking about the day 1 patch they dropped then that's blatant apologism on your part. I'm not going to give them credit for actually patching the game into a playable state on release hahaha. If by redid you mean actually added the story LOL. Pre-patch copies were like a fucking tech demo, that's a bottom barrel argument. It also has nothing to do with the lies told and lack of any communication post release. He falsely advertised the game, of course people are upset. They thought they were buying one thing and he delivered another. Its really simple to understand. People got mad at Ubisoft, Peter Molyneux and many other examples for the exact same thing.

I'll certainly remember that...believe me...

How ominous. You do that and add some ellipsis too. Having opinions is what you're entitled to, having them respected is entirely based on their content.

My opinion doesn't deserve special consideration? I'm not looking for a medal, I just want you to open your eyes and see what I do. But it's hard to see things with the flames of hate flashing in-front of everything, eh?

Flames of hate, haha. Factually labeling someone who lied continually a liar and saying that their product sucks when it does is FLAMES OF HATE. People are bitching online, no one egged his house or kicked his dog. You're the one all worked up over this, grasping at straws and trying desperately to save face over a silly argument you lost a long time ago. It's a shitty half finished game and Sean Murray lied a lot, deal with it. He traded reputation for a sack of money.

So what if he did, Verno? What the fuck then? Does it change a single fucking thing in your mind? No. Would you believe a word he said if he did apologize and explain what happened? No. So why do it? I've been on hre for two days just trying to make you see that he's a human being and I've got fuck all for my efforts. Don't act like him saying anything would change anyone's mind, most of all yours...

The customers he ripped off are human beings too. I don't see him writing apologies and making good on his promises. I don't see him giving the money back or making his game what he said it would be. Oh suddenly everyone else is just being too angry at him and he can't blamed for even a lack of apology. Everyone else is to blame for his decisions, his promises and his product, very convenient. Heck we're responsible for his feelings too. Funny how your consideration only extends to where its convenient to your argument. Have a nice fuckin vacation!

Your reply comes off as extremely childish and honestly I debated whether to even waste the time. Your mind is set, nothing, not Murray apologizing, not Sony refunding money, not the fucking Second Coming of Christ will change it. If refunds and apologies were made, you'd say they weren't enough or that it was too late or that they should have known. So whatever. One thing that I'll make very clear to you so you won't misunderstand - I wasn't in this to 'win'. I'm not 12, I don't have discussions and debates with people in order to best them. How fucking childish can you be? You threw it out as if I was going to be hurt, 'I'd lost the fight a long time ago'. I wasn't fighting to begin with, you jerk. I just want to shake the anger and stupid out of you, don't you understand?! That's why I'm not wasting any more time with you. I've got better things to do with my time then constantly repeat things because you can't be arsed to actually see what I'm saying.

This place is filled with hate, everyone's itching for a fight at the drop of a fucking hat. Much more than normal. I'm tired of having to explain myself because I don't follow your sheep mentality and yet it's ignored, as you did- constantly. It's sad, really. I love this place. So many other places one can go and yet I stayed here. But interacting with the lot of you isn't fun anymore when you refuse to see anything but what you want to see.

And just to push my point even further that none of us here know what happened during NMS's development or the reason some features were omitted, it seems that modders are finding all kinds of things that are in the games files yet are not implemented, for whatever reason. Maybe it didn't fit with the design, it didn't work the way they wanted...who the fuck knows? I sure don't. Neither do any of you. (And it's really fucking sad I need to disclaimer that)

In any case, derelict, crashed freighters have been brought back into the game, via a mod. They spawn in the ground, are randomized and are lootable. It's still early days and things are still a little wonky in spots but it's a great start! Plus there's a mod that enhances the worlds and their generation, with some spectacular results!

I don't know, you're the one ignoring the facts here so I wouldn't go throwing that sheep label around before you take a look in the mirror.

I'm ignoring nothing. Do you read anything I write? Any bit of it whatsoever? I never said he didn't make mistakes. I never said he didn't do wrong. My beef isn't with that at all. You'd know that if you actually read what I said, Verno.

Sean Murray didn't just make a mistake, that's a blatant misrepresentation of what actually occurred especially in light of their company's failure to own the issues and lay out plans to address it.

Did they not do that exact thing even BEFORE release? Or because it wasn't good enough for you (as in everyone here with the pitchforks and torches)? They totally redid a large part of the story and path and they said why AND they said what they were going to do going forward to enhance the game. Oh, but you're not talking about the release, no. You're talking about the 'lies' told for months before hand, yes?

Opinions are not inherently worthy of respect, I don't know why you think your opinion deserves special consideration.

I'll certainly remember that...believe me...

Sean Murray made a big pile of money and a lot of people feel ripped off, he also won't address their concerns. Of course they're upset and its perfectly normal. People threatening to kill his cat? Not ok. People calling him a lying dick who won't face the music? Fine. When I take someones money at work I damned well better do a good job or I hear about it. Sean Murray deserves no better.

So what if he did, Verno? What the fuck then? Does it change a single fucking thing in your mind? No. Would you believe a word he said if he did apologize and explain what happened? No. So why do it? Threatening to quit the website over people calling bullshit on your weird opinion about No Man's Sky is pretty childish but whatever, its your life *shrug

Just as childish as the behavior in this thread, so I'm in good company. I'm tired of being labeled a white knight because I want people to treat others like human beings. God fucking forbid, the horror! I try to act respectful and considerate to most people here and it gets me nowhere. Maybe if I acted like a douche, my opinion would have more weight. Works for Trump...
