It all depends on what restrictions users are willing to live with. With Steam, you have to deal with online authentication and the possibility that some day the service and your purchased games may no longer be available. The upside is the portability. I can run Steam and download my games anywhere I go.
For me, the trade off is worth it. But I understand if some people don't feel the same way. I'm not willing to accept the SecuROM limited installs so I won't buy those games. There's plenty of other ways to spend my money.

Crytek has so far has refused to comment on SecuROM or the activation limit. On the Crymod forums, they keep saying that they will release a FAQ soon and then they lock all threads on the subject.
It seems like they are trying to get as many first and second day sales as possible before people realize that SecuROM is installed. And that's complete bullshit to me. If you are going to impose restrictive DRM measures on your software, then you have an obligation to inform your customers, even if it's going to stir up a lot of controversy.

Withholding the DRM info is bullshit but I guess that's the sad state of affairs we're in these days. SecuROM is on the retail copies according to users on CryMod. No confirmation one way or the other about the Steam version yet but I'm not holding out much hope.

Why do most people here seem to be so hostile towards Macs? The lack of market share will probably prevent them from ever being a great gaming platform. But, outside of games, OS X is a really good operating system.

The cost of developing a top tier game keeps increasing, especially with the new consoles coming out. I'm guessing that most independent developers don't have deep enough pockets anymore to do it alone.
How can there be a lawsuit unless the NFL violated the terms of their existing contract with Take Two?
I'm as happy about this as everyone else but the NFL has the right to license their product however they want.

The original Civ is still my favorite game of all time and I'm looking forward to Pirates.
But, I wish that Firaxis would do something original instead for their next game. I'm not sure if it's worth reviving Civ yet again if it's going to be the same basic game as all the others.

Apparently, they have to wait until the retail release because of their contract. In the future though, I'm guessing that we'll see their games on Steam long before they hit the stores.

The 17th was always the EA advertised release date.
If you buy a game, it's yours forever (or at least as long as Steam is around). What I think Valve is considering is adding a subscription service option that will give you access to everything on Steam for a limited period of time.
