The attitude that anyone should be satisfied with their current successes is absolutely disgusting. Maybe you among others who complain here prefer mediocrity, but the rest of us not so much.

Funny that when Valve does it it's the second coming of Christ.

Because Valve are as loud as they can be that they're releasing new content, and people herald and cheer them like they're somehow unique. It's pretty easy to release an incomplete game 9 years later (6 maps? Hello 1996!) and cheer yourself as you add content cut from release, namely the maps and unlocked weapons.

I expect post-release support for PC games I buy, and I usually get that in my purchases, many other Valve titles included.

Did AoE3 sell well? I recall it having little fanfare, and while I was a long-time fan of AoE I neglected to get AoE3. It was just too difficult to justify getting such a by-the-numbers RTS when competition in the genre was so fierce.

Abandonware is legal? Bullshit, there's no legal definition for "abandonware." No computer software has even approached the copyright term limits so far. The whole 5 years or not in stores or whatever reason they came up with is a complete fabrication.

(I also got an XML parsing error when I viewed it through FFox on the desktop, which is strange because typically it doesn't do that to XHTML pages. Pocket IE and Opera Mobile rendered it without problems, the two primary Windows Mobile based browsers.)

The ESRB are assholes, but is there any reason this specific move, more descriptive ratings, is a bad thing? The movie industry started doing it recently too (past 5-10 years?), IIRC.

D3/Q4/ETQW are all the same engine, the Doom3/id Tech 4 engine. I was referring to the Q3/id Tech 3 engine in my original post. My original point was that Q3 engine's demo restriction worked, and that was on an engine that was just as active as Source was when it was new. You seem to agree that there's nothing stopping Valve from doing such a thing, so I really don't have much else to say about the situation.

BTW, have you have you noticed the Quake/Doom engine mod community is pretty much dead? Yes there are people still doing things. But compared to Source, it's dead.

You're comparing a 9 year old engine and a 14 year old engine (assuming you mean Doom1/2 since D3 never had much of a modding community) to a 4 year old engine that is receiving incremental updates. Of course the Source engine is going to be more active today. In the heyday of Q3 however, it wouldn't be all that unreasonable to say that Q3 and Source were in the same level of activity.

As for the original topic, I simply think modding is a weak reason for a time limited demo. I'd stop just short of calling it an excuse. I also think the concept of a time limited demo is quite dumb too, but I don't really care enough about it to hold a strong enough opinion.

Then you obviously have no idea how easy it is to get maps running under the Source engine.

The Quake3 engine had a restricted demo mode that if I'm not mistaken pretty much killed most types of demo modding. If there were mods, it certainly didn't affect the full version much. And that was on an engine with arguably a larger mod community than Source has been.

There is no technical reason that the Source engine could have a similar feature.

Why are they going to make a shooter, they need more ISK (US dollars) and a console game would help that, also Walking In Stations Expansion or what I am calling WISE is so far behind schedule that all the environments are sitting collecting dust, if they design the game around using these art assets they can pay themselves back the cost of creating it all as adding this content to Eve is going to break the games engine even more then it is now, thus they have slowed the entire game down with QR patch and re-tuned every weapon and made the whole game much much lamer in hope of figuring out a way to get WISE to work at all, yes they are taking fun game play out to add the ability for it to be more of WOW like game with WISE, and then create Vampire Army of Darkness on top of that system.
