This will never happen. This guy is too late and from the UK, where UK devs RARELY come through, and when they do, they do not adhere to the quality control standards we have in the states. So the games are buggy and crappy in the control area.

Not saying that American games aren't, we are just the cream of the shit pile.

Rare indeed but the irony here of course is that the finest of all UK developers, RARE, continue to set the standard that most other developers, including your beloved US developers, strive for.

But then they spent many years in bed with Nintendo and if you want the best in video gaming you still look to Japan.

Simply because the games will be played by many a casual gamer who, unlike most people frequenting forums such as this, care not for the politics of the "big 3".

I'm no "fanboy" - as the younger folk like to say - of any of the console manufacturers, but I would seriously hate to see Microsoft cleaning up.
XBox360 needs competition and that can only be a good thing from a consumer's point of view.

I think it may surprise many just how popular Wii is when it comes along.

I would say that depends on the outcome / popularity / pricing of Blu-Ray.
It deserves to succeed but in reality us consumers are sheep to the biggest and best spent marketing budget.

So in short, it's probably more of a battle between Sony and Toshiba that will determin the success of PS3.

How about street racing video game linked to potentially fatal real life street racing?
Games coming under fire all time. Yawn.

Cricket will never take off in the states since there is always that chance that the game can end in a draw.

I was in Florida for the '94 World Cup finals and remember tuning in to a radio station for some results as we travelled back from some place.

Mexico were playing. I forget who. It didn't seem to matter. They won by a goal. The sports announcer on the radio announced it thus - "And in today's important 2nd round game, Mexico 1".

lol. The other team didn't warrant a mention since they'd failed to score.

Gotta love you American guys.

Realism. Pah. Who wants realism?
Give me fantasy and fun every time. Real life is dull.

So do we get bad refereeing decisions, drunken missile hurling fans and dishonest goal-keeping on the part of Malcom G United?

Realism. Bullshit.
For realism tune in to match of the day.
For fantasy fun play games.

I read the Lucasart interview with an open mind but was still left feeling a bit bemused by this guy.
Games aren't about story and character development they are about presenting a challenge and rewarding successful completion of that challenge.
Comparing games to movies is something that has seen the industry become stale and lifeless.

I wanted to pick up and play a PS2 game yesterday before I sat down to eat. I looked through all my games and there wasn't one that I could have just tinkered with for half an hour. They're all intense story-driven drivel - including GTA (which I love).

I'm in the minority but I'm looking to Nintendo to go back to basic with games and give me something that I can just pick up and play not have to sit through some shitty game designer's idea of a story.

this game is 2 seconds old and already a 5Mb patch to fix errors.
here's a thought: release good code.
probably not worth buying anyway

Sometime soon there will be no IP's, franchises, licenses etc left. What a dull world the video game world really is.
God bless the Japanese for keeping creativity alive.

id clearly and deliberatly slowed the pace with DOOM3.
Seems to me it also divided the action/shooter camps in half. Namely:

1) Those that enjoyed the game and took it for what it was - a glossy retelling of a story that was previously only implied. These guys were happy to trawl the base reading PDA's and finding keycards to open ammo lockers etc.,

and 2) those that just wanted the DOOM action of old. ie. You, your shotgun and a room full of hell

Personally I fall in to the latter so for me the game failed to meet my expectations.

But that's my opinion. Certainly doesn't mean it has to be everybody elses.
The only comparison with Half Life 2 is the 3D presentation of the game. Oh and stuff gets shot, too.

Go buld rockets John Carmack. YOu're done. Apparently when you get to a certain age, you are incapable of creativity.
This guy is at the top of his game.
It's his game designers that need an overhaul. They get given some of the finest technology and produce a pedestrian game like DOOM3.
Sorry, but looking for someone's PDA so that I can read their emails is not what I want from an action shooter.

I worked for the company in their Manchester studios up to December 2002 when they laid me off.

This news is something of a bitter sweet thing.
There were some genuinely talented artists and coders working on utter drivel.

It was always exciting walking around the studio and seeing what the teams had running on their screens. I remember in particular the death animations that were being polished for Gladiator and Alwyn's concept sketches for the same game. Exciting stuff.

A real shame.
I hope they all move onwards and upwards.

p.s. it's nice to see the kid's comments on this board remain entertainingly tiresome.

Steve Polge made my pre-internet Quake days wonderful with his reaperbots. Another mod-made-good success story in the same vein as Mr Gray and Mr Willits. Nice.

hey nin, wasn't there a rumor about id doing an RPG style game at one time? i seem to remember after Quake2 when Trinity was being talked about that there was some talk of id doing a medieval-style RPG game... ir maybe i'm just confusing my history... ???

Quake was a character from one of Carmack's D&D games.
Some magical menace with a Chaos Cube floating above his head that had the power to wreak havoc on all and sundry.
This was going to be translated in to the game Quake as an RPG, but it seems the decision was made (after about a year of Quake's development) to turn the game from an RPG in to the game we have today.

You can read it all here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0375505245/qid=1090221557/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/102-7546976-7168105?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

Not least due to the fact that the games industry is dire just now and the games coming off the production line are rather dreadful, DOOM3 will be worth owning.

In fact, I just want to see the new Cyberdemon. If there is one. If not I just want to see the new Caco. If there is one. If not I just want to see the new Revenant. If there is one. If not I just want to see the new Mongy Mongy. If there is one. If not I just want to.. oh, what the hell.

There's enough nostalgia attached to this game for me to buy it anyway.

Besides, were it not for the original DOOM we'd probably all be still playing shitty Microsoft flight simulators on our PC's.

"Doom 3 has yet to show it has anything else going for it."

Apart from pure terror which is what the game's hook has always been. I'm a horror fan and this game will appeal to me because of that. In fact, I think therefore it has a tremendous amount going for it. Few developers have mastered the translation in survival horror from the concept to the reality. If id succeed (which we'll all have to wait and see for) then they'll have a massive fan base for Doom 3. Me included.

God knows how you can knock a game you've never played. (2 year old leaks excluded obviously)

For what it's worth I also think Half Life 2 will be fantastic. (Awesome, rock, l33t, dude)
