"to EA, made two fucking horrible RPGs to end the saga of all sagas, I am still convinced that Richard Garriot knows how to make an excellent roleplaying game. "

Creston, I think Garriot played a role in those last two sagas.

I'm not trashing him, but I think his former fame is about used up. I saw this article, and thought: "Now what has he produced in the past five years?". He has survived (sort of) on his creative reputation and people may not like his next project..

The Ultima series was probably one of the greatest gaming experiences to date, but Gariot seems to be in a funk he just can't get out of.

Schanpple,

I think its death for the Tribes series. It's also the loss of jobs at HL, for they will definitely go into maintenance mode, and the developers for TF2 who have been drinking beer for four years instead of writing software will be on the streets.

Those employees left at Valve will be unable to release servers and upgrades for HL/CS as they do now.

Vaporware projects like TF2 will wither on the vine, though the name may be used in other ways.

CS gets a face lift and moves to the XBOX, which is good news for the creators of CS if they have managed to hold some sort of license agreement with Valve.

More microsoft games have more outtake cut scenses because they use the 'expertise' at Blizzard. It could also be the death of Battlenet as it is migrated into "The Zone". The fate of Blizzard's games is unclear, though WOW will be even more popular than expected with MS's distribution and marketing arm behind it.

Geez I feel like Nostradamus...

EDIT: lots o' spelling

So why is it so bad? Seems original to me to have an RTS based on Curling.....

nin, I agree with you completely. This is no rap on Soule.

Moon,

I disagree about the designers and programmers, I feel the products would be VERY simiilar. Mr. Soule's skill at writing more than one song is not surprising to me at all.

I'm not saying the games suck because of this, but I kinda like _real_ choices and variety...maybe its just me, but I don't see it an awful lot of cases amongst the big players in the industry where someone is striving to make a product different and unique (and enjpoyable to boot).

The 'sense' I'm trying to make is that it is possible big publishers find it easier to be spooning out the S.O.S. to the hungry. There are way too many cases of that already.

Perhaps we are already in an age of product stagnation in computer gaming.

I would find it interesting to know the history of how he managed to sign with all three games. I know that they all possibly did not intend to be released together (all three being repeatedly delayed), but I am surprised there were no non-competition contracts signed. Especially with his name recognition.

I can understand him writing the music for various software titles under various types of genres, as many film composers do....but all three of the big name titles competing in the same genre in the same year? And only one guy can write the music? And if you listen to the music, there are obviously similarities. Of course there would be. The same creative mind wrote them.

Let's see, Dungeon Siege, Morrowwind, and NWN...all released within 6 months of each other...What if they used the same programmer...What if they all used the same designer...all the sudden, they would all be the same game.

I'm not questioning Soule's judgement or talent, they paid him the money for it. But it seems as if the three producers in question did not strive to be 'different' in this aspect of the game.

Maybe music is not very important to a game.

Anyone else find it odd that one composer would work on three competing pieces...Dungeon Siege, Morrowind, and Neverwinter Nights.

I always thought there was something strange there...

Wow...I'm impressed Gamespy did an honest review...I thought the fix would be in with those guys for sure. Their preview sure was deceiving....

Guess after its release, they had to realize it was too disasterous to defend.

Not only that, but think about it.... Dec 4th is only a week away...If you postponed a project 6 months ago, submitted a new schedule, and waited seven days before delivery to say it wasn't ready, you'd be out of a job.

At least you would be politically finished.
