Pit Bulls have a very tainted public image, and for obvious reasons. However, attacking humans is not a trait of the various breeds. They are strong, loyal, dog aggressive, but actually very good with people. The AKC recommends them as good with children. I'm not sure if the statistics are available, but I'm betting that the vast majority of serious attacks on humans were from trained fighting dogs, or dogs trained specifically to be violent toward strangers. Bad owners make for bad dogs.
