A prequel built in the Build engine? Seriously? Why not ship the soundtrack on vinyl while you're at it?

Not working for me.

They probably pushed it up a little early, rolled it back, and will push it forward again in the next couple of days. Just keep an eye out, I imagine.

They've said they're going to have some open beta weekends prior to launch.

Then they can use that to convince me to preorder.

Looks like I was wrong, not about my massive toon cock but:

"This evening Blizzard did confirm that the game will be available for purchase rather than as a free-to-play model. There’s a basic digital release for PC only including the 21 heroes Overwatch will have at launch. That one’s £29.99 at the time of writing." From RPS

They're trying to split the difference - get a return-on-investment at launch from the loyalists who will put down money for anything with Blizzard's name on it, and then convert new players over time with the F2P model. It's not a half-bad idea. I'm not preordering until I've gotten a chance to play it a little, though, so hopefully I get into the beta. Been burned too much lately.

Why the decline? Is it the game itself? Did enough other mmos finally gain traction to drag the userbase away? I haven't tried a new mmo in a while - does everyone in chat still go in and complain about how much worse than WoW it is? Is it cell phones?

Could just be my own observation, but it seems like, as time has gone on, more and more folks re-up for a new expansion, blow through the content in a month or two, and then unsub for 18 months. They've always struggled with keeping people hooked with new content, and if you don't raid...

MMOs have always struggled between providing too much content and not enough, simply because of the wide variety of player engagement. Too much content and your casuals won't be interested in new things because they haven't done the old stuff; not enough and your hardcore players will blow through it in a weekend.

At the end of the day, though, I kind of feel MMOs have passed, simply because of the time investment involved, and the relative lack of success at making a more short-burst MMO. The closest thing to a short-burst MMO has been doing pretty well for a good long while now... it's called Destiny.

If players at a football/basketball/baseball game acted like people on the Internet do, they'd never make it to the locker room after the game. They'd get both legs broken before they made it off the field/court.

If you had ever played a team sport competitively you would understand where the internet gets its inspiration for that behavior.

Oh I have. And there's a difference between playing pick up games at the Y, and playing competitively, where acting like an asshole affects your ability to play with the same people again and again. If professional sports was all done at the pick-up level, sure, it'd be the internet. That's one of the reasons why, y'know, it's not.

The biggest problem with this is that it's tied to a game publisher - it needs to be an agnostic independent, not someone who's got an agenda (and a series of games) to push...

Image if soccer/football/basketball/baseball players played their sports with duckttape over their mouths. That's what it feels like to play a Blizzard game in the 21st century.

in which case they wouldn't be able to redline the hardware enough for it to be a concern in the first place...

PS4 plays games at 1080 that the Xbox can only muster 900p. Pretty sure the current games already red line them, a lot of them are 30fps @ 1080 because of the hardware limitations.

Sure (although, as always with consoles, that's people just doing things sloppy upfront because they can, as they'll "find" more power in the console over the life of the device, y'know, like they always do) but people aren't making "deals" to "limit" games - developers make choices that mean the least amount of overhead to be in front of the most amount of people. The idea that Microsoft is coming with a bag of cash saying "Make your game worse on PS4 and we'll give you this money" is ridiculous, compared to the reality - "This is how the game can run on our console. If you want to code for PS4 first and port to us, you're going to do a significant amount of work to scale down, or you can design to our specs and let the PS4 version look a smidgen worse. Your call."

This whole conspiracy bullshit is just that.

This candid response is nice to see but it hasn't stopped Mr. Spencer from hiking prices, making deals with studios to limit their games graphics and functionality so they don't look/run/play any better on other hardware.

Look, I'm no Microsoft fanboy by any stretch of the imagination, but this sound like total fictioneering to me. Any game developer worth their weight would absolutely laugh at someone suggesting a deal like this, unless they absolutely weren't going to get to make the game in the first place, in which case they wouldn't be able to redline the hardware enough for it to be a concern in the first place...
