Hi Blue, I'm guessing since CAD showed up in teh funny, you've been going back thru the archives (Hence today's teh funny). That's good to see, because Tim is a very talented guy. I would have happily mentioned it to you sooner but I thought you were already reading it :).

Joy! The rabid fanboy in me is screaming out, I just hope May 30th was long enough for the game to have enough testing and polish. I'd rather have it be delayed than rushed.

In any case, huzzah!

It's good to see Bethesda be refreshingly honest and transparent in a world where everyone wants to obscure their methods. Even if the most cynical see it as a facade, at least they sport the impression they actually give a damn about their customers, which seems to be a rare thing in this industry.

Blame it on the incomplete and hackneyed architecture of your video card. From all signs, the 5900 should compete with the 9800, but the FX line was built by NVidia's 3DFX division, and they really fucked up the PS 2.0 support. In our work with Reality Engine, enabling PS 2.0 drops our FX cards to 1 fps. All FX cards will run like garbage with newer PS 2.0 games. There's really nothing you can do about it except upgrade.

Yeah, I noticed performance always gets fucked up on PS 2.0 games like quake and doom if it is enabled, while BF2 works fine. I bought this card over a year and a half ago before these issues became known, so my loss. Ah well, perfect excuse for UPGRADE! :). I bet that crappy $50 mx500 in my HTPC probably runs the game better than my 5900, heh.

Thanks for the heads up, I appreciate it.

EDIT: I was planning on upping the card soon enough anyways, but I was hoping I could eek it out for one more generation and divert that cash instead toward a 360. Ah well.

EDIT: 6800GT is on the way, courtesy of newegg. Now the waiting begins.... Thank god for Black's replayability.

Well I have an althon 64 3200+ and a Geforce 5900XT Ultra, and it is completely unplayable. Not even 8fps at 640x480 with EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING OFF. There must be a driver issue or something with my card, but the other post about the 6800 is encouraging, I think its time to ditch this card. Which is sad, because every other game runs beautifully on it, but for some reason Morrowind is completely unplayable.

Darn. I was so looking forward to playing today too.

EDIT: The weirdest thing especially is that the flyover intro ran smooth as silk, but as soon as I hit the character creation screen it went molasses. I'm definitely not CPU-limited either, it never went above 50% at the peak and averaged about 20%, so I think its definitely a card issue.

EDIT 2: Looks like new forceware drivers came out a few days ago. Heres hoping they fix it.

EDIT 3: Looks like there is just something in the first room that is causing an uber-slowdown, once I got out of there it ran OK, the first fight was a little choppy but not horribly so. We'll see...

Oh damn, I didn't know it was being offered over D2D. I much prefer that if for anything I don't have to play the goddamn CD swap game, even if it is 4.5 gigs of bandwidth-sucking goodness.

CD verification swapping more than anything is my #1 reason for using digital distribution at any time (plus it's highly convenience, but that's #2).

EDIT: Oh, and I'm installing now from DVD while I wrote this post. Going on 20 minutes on the install for this giant thing at about 75%. the suspense is *killing* me.

I never thought I'd say this, but *please* delay this game at least a year. There's no way this game could be fully baked by June (although it would explain the incredible time between BF2 patches). I *love* BF1942 and BF2 so much that I was willing to wait for the goofyness to be patched. Plus, this fast of turnaround will cause modmakers to probably stop work since the next installment is just right around the corner (unless it uses the same engine, which it might).

Pleaaaaaase! Thanks

Will this support widescreen? Specifically 1920x1220

WTF? Do you have a Blue Gene supercomputer under your desk or something? There's no way you're going to be able to run it playably at 1920x1220.

Sniper rifles hit where you are aiming OMG!

This is another thing that I think is misconcieved. Sniper rifles always have been and always were perfectly accurate in BF2. They just added an extra level of realism by having bullet drop, i.e. the farther the shot, the more gravity is going to pull the bullet down. All you had to do was aim slightly higher and you'd still hit every time. I quite enjoyed the extra challenge of guestimating the distance and raising my shot accordingly.

People just get pissed because sneaking up on a sniper isn't as simple as run up to and stab.

People don't get pissed because of this. They get pissed because claymores are undisarmable and indestructable. If an engineer could wrench a claymore and disarm it, or special forces use C4 to blow it up, I don't think it'd be as much of an issue. But the fact that once a claymore is placed it is permanent is quite a concern. Me and a friend usually get around this by going in twos, but it still sucks to have to rack up a death just to get to a sniper.

EDIT: me sucky with the bold tags

I find a Sci-Fi setting MUCH less interesting than more real world settings.

I agree. There's just something about the kick, bang, and nature of ballistic weapons that just doesn't convey into laser and energy weapons. If they stick to the tune of straight ballistics then I'll certainly be interested (not like I'm not going to fanboi this one to heaven regardless)

Patch Impressions Feb 14, 2006, 14:41
Feb 14, 2006, 14:41

Initial impressions from a sad pathetic man who has logged over 300 hours in BF2 (though some have logged over 1900...)

Dolphin Diving is gone. Kaput. Can't do it. Unfortunately the implementation also did what I worst feared, which is that they made it so that you can't throw C4 or mines while in midair for that extra "oomph". You can still prep a grenade/flash and jump just before you throw to get the oomph, but this is going to seriously piss off a lot of people who use this (IMHO) legitimate tactic.

One interesting change is that you also can't fire while you're in the process of standing up, which helps prevent the "roll-bounce" maneuver. Good to see this, because if you dive to the ground, you have to commit to it now.

The choppers have less missiles, but the missiles seem to do more damage. The HIND seems to have more armor.

AA is *drastically* improved. Maybe almost too much so, because every single one will hit dead on helis even if moving perpendicular. Makes flying helis a lot more cautious, and I'm glad they did it, because helis now have about tank-level survivability, but they are still pretty effective if flown correctly. No more circle hovering, cuz you'll just get AA'd to hell.

Heli Guided missles have a shorter range, but only to about 300m instad of 550m, so they are still reasonably effective at a distance, just not so much to be used as a full on standoff weapon, but great for popping up over ridges.

Seeing the UAV kicks ass, if nothing than to make you way more paranoid. Haven't tested how destructable it is yet.

You now see rank next to the hover-text of people in your squad, which is kind of nifty.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased. The only other change I would like to see is an America-Army style m203, where the grenades dud out with around 10 or so feet, to prevent the "aim at foot" pushbuttoning. Outside of that, all the patch changes are well deserved.

Looks like EA dropped the ball on the EA downloader. It just gives me weird 1.12 patch errors when I try to download 1.2. Too bad too, I was hoping to have steam-like updating for Battlefield. Oh Well.

It's patchin' Time!

Its just about a year now and there still isn't any major mods released.

The game came out at the very end of June. 6 months != about a year.
