Way off-topic, sure, but can anyone recommend a better firewall/Internet security program?

In the spirit of staying off-topic...

Truthfully, unless you like having all the IDS-like features, the built-in windows XP firewall is more than enough. All you should be looking for is blocking of all those unnecessary ports that Windows leaves open, and the free XP firewall does that just fine.

Even better is having a NAT'd router between you and the internet. A $30 linksys router will protect you from 90% of the attacks out there (just for the love of god, change the default admin password).

FPP action shooter game

I assume they mean "First Person Perspective", but they're just trying to get the MMO*#$#FPRFSGS effect by making a simple FPS genre fitting sound taht much cooler with First Person Perspective Action Shooter Game!.

Don't you feel better already?

but I agree that it is too dark.

You guys do realize there is a flashlight right? I love the darkness for that reason.

I'll be moving thru an area with the flash when the lights go out, spot something, completely freak out, scramble to switch weapons, then start firing practically blindly in panic in the dark hoping I hit whatever the fuck that ugly thing was I just saw, then after everything quiets back down, flipping back on the flashlight to assess the damage. I think I appreciate the detail more at that point than if I just constantly saw it

Oh, and after flipping off the flashlight, I end up having to track by sound. My 5.1 surround sound just paid itself off today 3 times over. It is a REQUIREMENT for true enjoyment of this game (or at least some decent headphones)

NOTE: cross-posted from OotB

Absolutely. This game is all about atmosphere. Close all the curtains, turn up the sound, set up that 7.1 surround sound (though oddly enough DOOM won't do surround unless I downgrade it to 5.1, damn!) and get lost in it.

I've loved every minute of it, from the Half-Life esque boring yet suspenseful orientation to the moment when all hell breaks loose, the game just doesn't let up.

It's no wonder it took them so long to do this game. It just screams polish. From the small details to the interactive terminals to the intensely detailed environments. I now fully understand why this game took so god damn long

Getting overly immersed in the game is way too creepy. I'm sure my neighbors are wondering why I keep screaming expletives when those imps jump out from their various spots (And someone at iD is WAY too good at using misdirection tactics to scare the living crap out of you.)

Overall, I haven't been so immersed in a game since HL and Thief 2. It's a truly visceral experience. I've only taken a break to write these first impressions because my heart can't take anymore for a little while after those first three hours. I'm all out of adrenaline.

My Thatch has been burninated! DAMN YOU TROGDOR!!!

Good PlayTime, which I only went to because I am INSTALLING DOOM 3 RIGHT NOW.

Came in this morning and the guy that knows me at my Software Etc. was there :). He knows how much money I pump into that place and had it ready for me. He just handed it to me and I was in and out in 20 seconds

I DID pay in advance, in full. That's why I am so god damn pissed. I could understand if I had only done a partial reserve, but c'mon, it's bought and paid for

Yeah, Trauma and DICE have signed a contract, but whether Trauma are actively developing BF2 hasn't been confirmed (I think...).

Yes, I think I jumped the gun when I said that. It hasn't been officially confirmed, but you really just have to consider the following question:

Why would DICE, right before they announced a modern desertish warfare version of Battlefield, acquire a modern-day desertish warfare mod team?

Wasn't this the game that made BF1942 fun?

Battlefield was truly fun, but Desert Combat perfected the gameplay idea that BF1942 created, so yes.

Or is it simply that everyone believes that Battlefield 2 is just worthwhile waiting for?

Well, seeing as the reason trama studios can't work on DC is because THEY ARE DOING BATTLEFIELD 2, I would say that everyone believes battlefield 2 is worthwhile waiting for specifically for that reason

Nothing is more irritating than getting the call from my local Software Etc. that Doom 3 is in and ready for pickup, then going down there, asking for it, having them pull it out with your name stamped on the front of it, raising it within TWO FEET OF YOUR GRASP and then suddenly going "Oh wait, we can't sell this until tomorrow".

I'm not sure what kind of contorted look I gave my cashier, but I'm sure it wasn't pretty.

Actually, FarCry looks about on the level of Quake II.

What, were you running it on a TNT2 or something?

This isn't flamebait, I'm just saying, give far cry a little more credit than Quake II

Has a patch ever gotten such hype?

It's natural evolution. First came the quality first games, then a transition to "buy now, patch later", and now, patches get press. Mark my words, patches will begin getting independent reviews and more press than the original game. Some would argue that a few "expansion packs" are precisely this.

Sorry, I'm feeling cynical this morning
