News Comments > DOOM Released

Beamer wrote on May 13, 2016, 16:51:
I always find it fun when people complain that checkpoints dumb down a game. If anything, checkpoints make it difficult.

Give me checkpoints, and I can't save until after I finish a fight. Give me the ability to spam quicksave, and I save a dozen times during a fight.

One of those is way more difficult.

Here's my problem with it. We can skip the derivative console nature of it, and sophistry about the artistic creation of "encounters" where you are expected to make it all the way through without a save.

There are always very difficult points that take many attempts to get through. Then you fail at some later point.

Then you have to go through the first difficult part again. These are rarely puzzles but mostly high action, nimble-fingered reactions that involve a lot of luck just to get through the first time.

In practice, I rage at having to repeat the difficult part many more times just to squeak through and then die again before the next checkpoint.

I do not enjoy buffing my ability to get through a difficult part.

The first time for a hard part is pure joy! Having to repeat it is anger-causing tedium, as ironic as that sounds

No, again, first success at a hard encounter, yay! Now I have to repeat it, screw them.

Anyone trying out Open Beta? I've heard a lot of folks gushing about how good it is.....but I heard that about Diablo III and HotS at launch too.

You can tell overwatch was a salvaged project, the levels are uninspired and the whole game feels like team fortress rip off. The game itself is just meh, it isn't anything we haven't played before. People raving over this shit were all born after PC gaming in the 90's. Overwatch is largely stupid, if you played anything in the 90's this is nothing new at all. It's just another ho-hum fps for the bottom feeding trash among the gaming community and the young ones with no memory of games that were made pre-2000. Why the hell would you want to play a game with one weapon carry limit? It has console-itis written all over it.

Next is the drm, the matchmaking in overwatch is total balls and the game is totally controlled by bliz, good luck to those players paying $40 for a game they can shut off at any time.

I've been playing since Oregon Trail on a ball-based teletype with 110 baud modem. This is better than expected.

So far I like the robot, the one with the bird on its finger, because it can turn into an immobile gatling gun turret that can mow stuff down at about 3x normal gun rates. You can set up on top of the moving vehicle in escort missions.

The only flaw so far seems to be the opposition are computer AI rather than people, making it too easy, so real PvP will be very different. The "bad guys" come in very bunched up, not somewhat spread out, and don't dodge and weave much, like people in FPSs do.

I worry they don't want you getting discouraged so you don't buy the game. I would like a medium level to get my feet wet as I am experienced in FPS.

It's $39.99 on the PC.
Maybe the console version cost more

Yeah. PSN and looks like all the retailers only have Overwatch Origins Edition available for PS4 which is $60.

Being a multiplayer only game, it isn't like I'm missing out on anything or risking plot line spoilers/sequels by not playing it on release. Only potential is that the game dies before I have time to play it (EVOLVE!) but I'd be pissed about that either way.

I submit if it dies before you have a chance to play it, you aren't missing much. Except $60 if you bought it, so I'd be pissed spending that for a crappy game rather than missing an evanescent rush of players.

Wth doesn't someone make a proper Star Wars CRPG both in isometric and 3D? I'd like to see the first dealing with the Thrawn trilogy and the latter done open ended like a TES game. Want to be a bounty hunter? Cool. Want to be a Jawa and scavenge for a living? Why the hell not?

Yeah I'd kill for a proper SP RPG like that. I remember how hyped I was for Galaxies to be that in MMO form. And for a few days it really was like I was Wookie smuggler and then it quickly turned to MMO crap. ToR didn't even try to fulfill the R in the MMORPG acronym, it was just WoW formula in spaaaace.

The first thing my Jawa ass would do is start scavenging for turrets for the top of my giant sandcrawler. Screw those too-accurate imps!

BTW, in the remote chance of that as a game, lemme optionally use jawas or droids as gunners rather than force me into a minigame.

Because then they can just force you to unlock your phone by manhandling you.

The fact that they STILL don't understand that this whole Rush to Encryption is their own fault just speaks volumes about the kind of people that "serve" in government.

Pretty much. The government realizes they have an uphill battle in requiring decryptable phones, or escrows, or in forcing people to say their passwords. More than that, a probably losing battle.

But a physical fingerprint? That isn't free speech, that's physical evidence.

Of course, requiring you to set up the fingerprint unlocker, good luck with that.

The whole point of a pre-order is to be first in line to get it, whenever it eventually comes out. This is fraud.

I love in the one ad where one of the female heroes says, "The cavalry is here," with a pained look like a dog is taking a dump in front of her.

Or is that Overwatch? Is it time for my pills yet?

Apparently it was an official decision, and therefore a government action. I'd love to see a discrimination lawsuit because only males were present -- none had a vagina, after the government checked.

That it was canceled after the lone female dropped out because the remainders were male should make it a slam dunk.

> WHOLE STARS (and only 1 left!)

Sorry, any organization so powerful they can take, and put to use one star, much less 40,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars, isn't something a few planet-bound people with guns can handle.

For that matter, if there was even the remotest chance of loss, just let the universe keep its one star. The rounding error in success doesn't even show up.

I just wanna know if it is a good game. Lately these seem to be MOBA grandchildren, FPS with classes which have clawed back around to old Team Fortress, but the classes are a unique hero name to let u no ur spechul.

I'd still like to see a Supreme Court ruling that "cloud" and other online storage has 4th Amendment protections as your "papers", where people have an expectation of privacy. This already applies to your phone.

That some 3rd party holds your info, and therefore "you have no (4th Amendment) expectation of privacy" has always been a bit of government sophistry.

I thought the Supreme Court ruled you couldn't be forced to reveal your password, but apparently that was a physical combination lock.

As for the other two issues, the powerful are clamping down harder and harder.

It is heavy industry that lets us look out on the Earth from our air conditioned homes and cars and think it cute and quaint, rather than the festering, infection-laden, dirt-floored, disease-overrun, death-from-mosquito-bite-infection, 5'1" adult male, hunter-gatherer, starvation-wracked, starvation month cycled, s***hole wolf or lion or tiger bite you of an existence masked by the window pane holding the cold air in and horse pile-picnicking gnats out.

The game came out over a month ago. Why are they just now getting around to doing this?

And was it obviously an exploit?

I remember EverQuest having a dungeon with a bridge in it, and running over the bridge then jumping down (and the monster wpuld run back off the bridge and around and down rather than jumping) was an "exploit."

Meanwhile in most games, that is strategy. Of course, "zoning" to flee a fight you were losing was considered an exploit at first, too.

"Extremist." God knows when people having equal rights became extremist.
Kind of like how people label sexual practices as political. Or even a choice. I've often wondered how much homosexual sex these nutbag fundamentalists have to engage in before they *chose* women instead. Never had one admit that he consciously chose women over the sweet taste of a man... >shrug< Then again, I live in a state where oral sex between a man and a woman is actually illegal. ROFL. Backwards rednecks.

Properly speaking, when creating a government and granting it a limited list of powers, who grants it the power to regulate adult sexuality to begin with?

People shouldn't even have to rely on "born that way" just to be free.
