They also mention that the demo was such a svelte 1106 MB download due to the exclusion of 33 MB worth of DirectX installers, so a DX installation is necessary for anyone who doesn't have it yet.

The DX webinstall is about 500k, thats hardly something you should be leaving out to save a tiny amount of filespace on a 1gig file.

In an effort to reduce cost and download times, the Battlefield2142 demo or retail release does not include innovation or 'fun'. Please be advised in order to experience these unholy sensations, you should install QuakeWars when it is released and ensure that the battlefield2142.exe is removed from your C:\Battlefield 2\mods\ directory

CS has always had changes/tweaks done to it, even after it was bought by valve. Its keeps the game fresh and interesting if new things are added, and new or old dymanics are tinkered with so the game flows differently.

What your asking them to do is the same as EA currently do with the battlefield franchise. Ship a broken game, patch it once or twice then just release a new full price game that includes changes that should have been made to the original.

'Open' Betas now arent about testing the games for bugs, they are simply a PR tool to get the game some extra advertising and guarantee it some extra points in a review score.

And yes, its PR departments that decide to hold an open beta now, not the developers. And for some reason, PR people only know of two websites that can host them, and both suck ass.

Dont have the beta? I have whipped up a quick BF2142 simulator, that gives you the authentic BF2142 experience:

1. Randomly click on any icon on your desktop. For more authenticity, try clicking on a really important icon than can screw your entire system over with the wrong keypress.
2. Now try to launch a game of BF2142 from the next screen that appears.
3. Become frustrated and mash keys when you cant launch a game.

Gamespy beta's are usually horrible, as the majority of people who subscribe are idiots.

So Im expecting everyone to be shafted and lied to like last time. "Oh dont worry, all the bugs in the beta have been fixed for release"

I understand they’re going to continue the beta test but close it down for just those who have pre-ordered, good luck getting a non-biased update to the game’s pre-release state from them.

You understand wrong then. They are releasing more keys to pre-order people, but will keep the beta open for anyone already in.

Most of the RO problems originally came from a client bug that overloaded the servers. Now thats been fixed there is a serverside database issue which is being worked on and wouldnt affect the status of a gold candidate.

Its certainly better than gamespys multiplayer 'service'. And direct ip will be in for retail, but obviously wont be in a beta (you could play it for free forever then)

I think publishers give the file to all the major sites, but they have to wait until gamespot post it. Then they are free to host straight away and dont need to drag it from gamespot themselves.

Certainly beats the good old exclusive demo's Bileplanet had.

So that's why they wanted Microsoft to let them run their own Xbox Live servers. It's all so clear now.

Yeah, EA wanted MS to disable online service to their games after a year so that they could force people to buy a new game. MS politely told them to fuck off, and wouldnt let them run their own servers, either.

Eventually MS allowed EA to run their own system, so proper XBL games wont get shutdown like this but EA ones will. Fun fun fun!

"Who saw the video EA put out of their QA Team, and boasting how the team on BF2 was 3 times bigger then any other BF game?"

I did, the one where the entire QA team had lcd monitors but when the game shipped it had zero support for lcd resolutions. Surely one of them would have picked this up.

And I remember a EA guy just before release of BF2 said the retail game wouldnt have the same server browser problems that the demo had. They will lie through their teeth just to get you to buy this, BF2142 will have bugs a plenty.

The first 15 minutes are training while building up the story and background. You can still explore and play with the things in the world. Throwing things at people is fun

Once you do get a gun, its one hell of a fun game. The magnum is meaty and getting headshots with it is pure beauty. Love the puff of blood that lets you know youve scored one, and the stats tracking is very nice too.

Dynamic difficulty seems to be working very well, Ive been running around with 50-25 health all the time but only ever actually died to an enemy once, all the other times its because Ive cocked up a grenade throw. You need to play it cautious and remember to keep an eye out for anything that explodes.

HL2 only allows you to have 4 compadre's under your command. Any extras will usually stick around their area and run on auto unless they are part of a scripted sequence (like the strider street battles)

MP is geting a bit of love in this, as they are ditching the dire gamespy matchmaing and using something far better that actually works.

Tyranids wont be in until a full blown sequel, as the current engine couldnt support what they want to do with them.

Zerg will be in the full blown sequel. The devs have said that the current engine cant do them justice, so its other races until then.

EA's QA is a joke. They use LCD monitors but dont notice the lack of lcd resolution in the options. They miss huge bugs like red/blue names (which happens more now than before 1.2) and they dont bother to test every weapon on every vehicle properly (firing a TOW on these maps is what causes the crash)
