"and show optimism over the prospect that the add-on will support cooperative multiplayer play."

So both you and a friend can be bored.

"Consider it fortunate that GameSpy hasn't tried to lock out other browsers like AOL/MSN/etc do with IM clients."

They have and they do. Why do you think games usually require a patch shortly after release to enable ASE support? BF1942 and Americas Army both use the Gamespy SDK and needed patches so people could use outside server browsers that arent made by gamespy.

I would dearly love to see gamespy get some competition, as their current RTS backend offerings are utter shite. Loads of nat/router issues, lobby spam and unreliable servers are not really fun. Their fps server browsers in games are also rubbish.

ps, its usually the publishers who decide to use gamespy, not the devs. "What, you can save us $30 annually? Why of course our developers would love to suck your cock"

They always used to do top 10 lists that were completely retarded. Looks like they have learnt to count a bit higher than just 10 now.

You need to be a subscriber and pay the moneygrabbing fvcks to beta this. Anyone else has to wait for the open beta to come.

I hope the freespace license goes to somewhere that would actually DO something with it. THQ would be wise to grab it. Have Relic make a FS RTS (as they cant make another Homeworld game) and have Volition break out the old style Freespace action.

None of the files fileshack has hosted are exclusive to that site, other than the Steam Private beta. ASE just notifys you that there is a patch to be gotten for your game, and gives you a fileshack link. What more do you want it to do, link to fileplanet too? That would be wise, as gamespy is ASE's competitor.

"Beyond that, I have never heard of a game requiring Gamespy to be installed. They either are "Powered by Gamespy" or they suggest you install Gamespy to browse for servers."

BF1942 springs up instantly. In-game GSI browser. only external broweser you could use until the 1st patch was Gamespy arcade. Took a massive petition to get the devs to wrangle ASE/etc support in there, and then they broke it with a subsequent patch.

ASE get regularly fucked over by GSI making games master servers GSarcade/gs3d queryable only (ie, not public masters).

To badly quote someone: "Gamespy was born when Carmack made the quakeworld master servers public. Now Gamespy sells developers tools to make their servers private. Bastards"

Yay for IGN. Debuting a demo (IE, they have it first but anyone may mirror it straight away) rather than "this is ours for 24 hours, mirror it and we DMCA your family"

Go shove your head back up a publishers ass dakota, we all know you need to get some extra pucker time in there before you start spamming links to another fileplanet mirror on your compettitors websites. Hypocrite.

And if the info is wrong, why not, you know, tell us some meaningfull info?

I also post on the forum that everyones talking about now, and I am very critical of sierra. As are most of the people there, for some simple reasons.

It took months for sierra to acknowledge Homeworld2's existance, by putting up a teaser page that counted down to E3, 2002. E3 came and went and HW2 wasnt there, nor was anything mentioned about the game until a lot of people got annoyed and a few fansites decided to boycott relic until we heard something.

Relic and sierra then managed to wake up and got involved in a pre-arranged irc chat, where we were told more about HW2. Two of the things stated by sierra were "HW2 would be a world-wide simultaneous ship" and "There will be a beta test open to the public"

Fast forward to June, where Marweas (alex rodburg) shows up, and mentions that HW2 will be out in europe about 4 weeks after the US release. Then, middle of august (2 weeks before the game goes gold) someone contacts the head of PR at vivendi games, and receives the information that "There will be no Beta, or Demo" Im sure Marweas knew those details, but he had decided not to tell us.

Sierra bring this shit upon themselves, and then have the audacity to whine about "A small and insignificant community" causing them too much hassle.

I feel sorry for Relic in all of this, as they have been unable to do much to assist the fans with regards to info about the game, even tho they would have loved too.

Valve wanted the steam beta to be limited to only a controlled amount of people, so it was released via fileshack. Its not like it would have been free for everyone to have normally, until the software was more mature.

I never said fileplanet is the monopoly (anyway, had a friends account for a few days and was hugely unimpressed with their 'super fast' servers. Yay 40k/sec occasionally, fileshack maxes me out with 200k 98% of the year tyvm)

Gamespy are the ones with the monopoly. They create tools for developers to make a games mp easier to implement, but those tools protocols and servers also arent compatible with the 3rd party server browsers intentionally. It took a large amount of bitching to get BF1942 to support ASE. Before then you had to use the ingame gamespy browser, or gamespy arcade. Oh look, arcade is also bundled with every game that uses gamespy api's! Just like media player/IE is with windows.

The same is going to be happening with a few new releases. Homeworld2, even tho its an rts, will be launchable from gamespy arcade. But guess what, you cant use any other software! Im sure if microsoft made windows webservers only work with internet explorer people would complain....

And dont get me started on the whole Planetunreal/PlanetSeriously! debacle.....

Gamespy like the whole anti-competitive crap (especially with the 3rd party server browser tech). Itd be nice to see a lawsuit with some real backing
