You can block planetsides ingame ads very easily, and only people in the states will see them anyway.

And huxley isnt a 'real' MMOFPS. Sure its an MMO, but only so far as a game like counterstrike is while your in the server browser. You can only see and chat with the players, you actually have to then join a server to get to shoot them and the number of players in said server is limited to 64.

Planetside is still the only real mmofps anyone knows about, huxley is just UT with a fancy 3d server browser and chat program.

Very little advertising, some half-arsed updates, the BFR's (robots that were introduced as almost invincible, and its taken 12 months of huge nerfs to make the playerbase happy with them, though of course the people who used them regularly now whine that they are too weak and cant get the 130/1 kill counts they used to)

The expansion needed a lot more work and content before it was released.

Still, its fun if you can overlook the mistakes that were made along the way. Balance is still a bit off, but thats easily fixable.

Its still a fun game to play, and there are still enough subscribers playing to ensure some large fights happen all the time, bar graveyard hours.

What this game needs is more players, and hopefuly this free program will get more. Once people see the 166 vs 166 vs 166 fights at one base they become hooked very quickly, and even though the objectives can become repetitieve, there are enough continents and different bases/capture methods to keep it entertaining for a while.

Its a great game that suffered from poor support from SOE. It has the potential to be an amazing game if SOE bother to give it the chance it never really got.

Its hilariously easy to block adverts in the current gen of games that contain them. You just need to add the advertising server to your hosts file and point it to your own machine.

How long until they begin offering refunds to all planetside players because they introduced BFR's that ruined the game and killed the pops?

So what happened to the systems to stop this kind of thing happening that were supposed to already be in release?

I think EA/DICE enjoy lying in interviews, seems to be their thing when talking about BF2.

whaa? This makes no sense at all. WTF is "LCD" resolution?

1280x1024 is the native res of 99% of LCD panels. If you run it at any other setting, you get pixels stretched across dots, and it looks terrible.

other than those directed at people who think Dice was somehow lax by not catching every possible instance or bug that allows an abusive community of players to take advantage of the stat system

Sorry, but many of the 'exploits' were pretty similar to ones nearly every game has had that tracks/rewards actions. Hell, a few of them were even asked about in interviews before the game was released, and EA's response was that they already had systems in place to stop those exploits.

They lied. Just like they lied about the server browser in the demo not being the one that would be in the retail release.

A few months ago, Planetside introduced merits and tracking for activities in the game similar to BF2's. Revives, kills etc could all get you rewards if you got enough. But SOE were wise enough to put things in place that stopped people exploiting those stats (unique kills + timers). SOE are a bunch of idiots too, so its funny to see EA/DICE outclassed by them.

EA let plenty of bugs through, too. How about the fact that the EA 'Q&A' department all used LCD monitors, but the game dosent have an option to support LCD rez? Or the stupid IFF names bug? Or the random TK system, that punishes you for teammates stepping on mines or being too close when you explode? All are glaringly obvious, but EA passed them over.

The third carmageddon game was done by some aussie studio, the first two by Stainless software and published by SCI iirc.

What the RIAA will say is that since the ipod is capable of playing illegally download songs, that apple is indirectly infringing on their rights by not forcing DRM on all audio that is played thru the ipod.

The supreme court believed that grokster could have stopped infringement by implementing a less efficient flie sharing system. Whats to say another court would think apple's no-show with full-on DRM would mean they commited a thought-crime and intended for it to be used illegally?

Zathrus:

Ah, but the iPod dosent have full DRM. Sure, the AAC format is all drm'd up, but the mp3 and wav files on the thing are free.

Ive already seen a few suggestions that not having drm on your device could be taken as designed for infringing purposes. Afterall, if drm is there and avaliable why not use it!

This isnt just a defeat for grokster, its a blow for most technology.

If your hardware or software allows copyright infringement, the MPAA or RIAA can sue your ass now. How long until they sue apple for creating the iPod, or even IBM for creating the personal computer?

iirc, developer interviews for BF2 have stated repeatedly that unranked server can unlock the weapons from the start if they want.

Looks like EA are lying in their interviews again.

I still remember my first manual landing in this game. Took ages of practice and GC constantly telling me where to go, but I made it.

fun as hell, and actually made you think you were part of a real war, with ai sorties constantly being flown around you (and the radio chatter to boot)
