To me Derek Smart always seemed like the perfect guy for open-source games.

He's got the scope, dedication, and to make these games alone he must also have a pretty good "jack-of-all-trades" grasp of development (design, code, networking, models etc.) even if he is lacking in the expertise in any of them. IMO he'd be pretty good as a project leader and framework developer while the community fills in all the blanks for him. Hell, the name alone would get him a pretty dedicated small support-team.

Perhaps I'm just skeptical, but I really can't see how this is going to be better (or even really all that different) from Mafia.

The only thing I can think of would be if it was more open-ended, allowing you to set up businesses, rackets, and deal with rivals as you see fit.

Somehow I really doubt that's going to happen though.

I really wasn't impressed with DII. The way they structured the combat and units, it was much more like a light RPG then a TBS.

You inevitably end up with the single uber-hero and then nothing else but almost useless level 1 heros.

Since you're basically doing all your combat with that one uber-hero, he's the only one you use for most battles and if he dies, it's basically game over.

That was the only thing that I thought this game is going to need.

With 4-8 friends and graphics like that, it's looks like it'd be pretty awesome.

I was probably going to get this game (have an old computer) until I saw the system requirements.

Is that the going rate for even a TBS these days?

It seems odd to me that Star Wars spaceSims, with obvious demand I've been seeing for it, aren't being made.

Did the TIE Fighter series not sell well or something? Otherwise, I can't figure out why Lucas would pass on what seems to me to be an almost garaunteed hit.

Would anyone else have preferred it if the mercenaries were toned down a little, but there were more of them?

A team of 6-8 "common" grunts trying to track down and kill two super badass ninja spies (primarily through communication, team tactics, and heavy firepower) would have been much more entertaining IMO; for both sides.

I'm slightly more optimistic.

While I hardly expect this to be as good as the new Space RTS's coming out (or anywere close to the Homeworld series), I expect it to be at least playable.

Don't like how they're doing both space and ground combat though, instantly tells me that neither will be as polished as we'd like.

Kind of odd that they say Belgium, considering that Patton was stationed south in Lorraine when the line got that far East.

Just me or is it there for everyone else?

Might want to pull the link (or provide a warning).

Not great at the moment.

Their last games released (AFAIK) were Commandos III (mediocre at best) and Praetorians (about the same).

Still, Napolean: Total War looks to be worth keeping an eye on.

Perhaps I just don't "get it", but I always found it really hard to understand why people would be interested in the game.

It's Star Trek, it's set in space, and it's 2-Dimensional. From what I could tell, this engine didn't go beyond what'd be needed (as a bare minimum) for naval warfare up to World War I.

Maybe it's just me, but if I'm in a spaceship, I expect full 3D movement. The added dimension has the potential to grow the tactical possibilities exponentially. More then just 'keep turning until the guy's in your sights again'.

I asked two questions on the Atari forums awhile back but they never got answered.

1) Are the unit ranges in the game as short as they are in the trailer movies that have been released?

2) This game looks like it's trying to be (and, IIRC, calls itself) a Grand Strategy (ie. control the nation, economy, troop movements etc. on a 'strategic' interface ; control combat on a 'tactical' interface.), but the screen shots and movies show buildings on the combat zone. Is this a "standard" RTS (resources, production and combat all at the same time) or Grand Strategy?

Multi up to 128? Co-op for up to 32 players?

That sounds like a hell of an experience. How much lag is that looking at on DSL though?

Well, it can't hurt Disciples.

With the exception of the graphics, there was nothing really great about it to begin with. An RTS where you (pretty much) have just one guy.

Hopefully these new people will be able to put some strategy into it.

I think FF would do well to implement a Silent Storm kind of system.

Controlling all the characters at once, especially with abosolutely no A.I. to help out, became more of a chore then anything. (And yes, I know I could pause and issue orders but... meh)
