For most NAS uses these drives will be awful. Any write to a shingled section that isn't just appending data to what's already there involves a full 256MB read-modify-write cycle, and without an SMR-aware filesystem chances are that will be most of them. We're talking single-digit IOPS here.

Enterprise customers with custom-written object-store filesystems, sure. Your home server, not so much :/

the cheaper one was simply a shorter statue that did not light up.

It was also made out of metal instead of plastic. Disappointed they didn't go with that one :/

Was introduced in 13.8 beta 2 iirc. "Enabling CrossFire can result in the PCI-e bus speed for the secondary GPU being reported as x1".

Makes a bit more sense if the fix was just cosmetic.

I dare say it's not entirely up to them; they get to ask Activision nicely if they want to participate in a sale, and some asshole there decides that sure, why not, $1.49 off. I can't quite decide if they seriously think it'll make a difference or if they're trying to be insulting to Impulse and their customers.

£17.99 from Amazon UK. $27. I guess that eases the sting of the fascist activation limits.

Well, it was helping. Then my computer made a loud *POP*, and all the lights in the house went out.

My 8800GTS 512 is now dead, as is my PSU. Yay nVidia

Someone in an earlier thread suggested disabling v-sync. You might give it a try.

Ooh, yeah, that helps lots, pretty much resolves it for me, thanks. What an unfortunate default, do they not test these things?

Also: while I was testing this, I was randomly flipped to the desktop 3 times in as many minutes. It appears they hate focus-follows-mouse, maybe combined with multimonitor.

No, there's no appreciable difference in lag from 800x600 to 2560x1600. 2560*1600 is silky smooth, so it'd be very odd for that to be the problem anyway.

I guess I was a bit harsh saying 500-1000ms though, it's maybe not quite that high, maybe more like 300; it's certainly high enough to be very distracting. It feels like they're trying to replicate the craptastic aiming you get with a console controller, only with a mouse :/

Controls on the PC are actually pretty dire. There's something like a 500-1000ms lag between moving the mouse and the game actually noticing. Very distracting.

Runs very smoothly at 2560*1600 on my 8800GTS though. It just happens to play like my controls are connected via a server in China...

Performance still sucked, changing the system scan thing to give lower settings isn't a better engine, it's a quick hack. They probably tweaked it as well to be fair, but nothing noticeable.

Um, it was pretty noticable here; I can play Warhead with higher resolution and with comparable detail levels to the original and it still runs smoother.

Autodetection did seem a bit conservative, though, I had a lot of popup before I bumped up the detail levels.

The online activation actually worked fine, I think my disc is just defective. I am pretty pissed that I didn't find out about the limited activations until after I bought it though.

The game itself is good, certainly a tighter experience than the original. The engine is considerably faster; I can play in "Gamer" (aka "High") at 1920*1200 on a 8800GTS 512, though auto-detection wanted me to run "Mainstream" (Medium); a bit smoother, but has a lot of irritating popup. Hopefully they'll backport the changes to the original.

Oh look, the installer's hung. I wonder why that is.

Online activation you say? Maybe they should ensure they actually have some clue about high-availablility services before they do that.

Should have bought through Steam...

Got there eventually; it seems my DVD drive had spun down so low I couldn't hear it. This is apparantly not an isolated incident; some people had to buy a new DVD drive just to read the disc, so I guess they weren't manufactured very well.

PC Zone gave it 83%, "decent plot, satisfying tactical combat, real sense of strategy".
