Witcher 3 is going to blow this out of the water.

Why would you say something like that? Two great games are better than one.

Being the lead designer of World of Warcraft, I doubt he needs anything.

Reading the responses to the ARS article you would think none of these people had ever played a hard core game. Eve is hard core, Wildstar is just another themepark that is a shade more difficult than average.

Personally, I had enough cartoons in Wow. That turned me off right away to start with.

One could argue that a stylish theme is on the same level as a realistic theme that doesn't look very real (like almost all realistic themed games). I generally like stylish over mannequin looking models with dead eyes. But I think technology is stilling being pushed to have very realistic characters in game. Until then, you choose stylish/cartoon or dead looking string puppets.

Steam is becoming the Apple app store where 99% of the apps are shit and the other 1% are hidden by the crappy 99%. So now they can claim that their store has the most games and that's all that matters (quantity > quality).

"This constant yo-yo effect contributed to a development cycle in which planned features were partially completed and then dumped numerous times over. There seemed to be no clear vision on how the various parts would create a cohesive end product. "

This is generally the most common problem with any software development effort. If you don't have a clear vision, don't even start funding the project. Concepts and cool ideas aren't worth funding. You need a really clear vision, workflow, and even prototype before it's worth any consideration.

I think due to the impending video game crash, this game will do fairly well since there aren't a whole lot of triple-A games to play these days (there's still a lot of gamers who only want to play triple-A titles).

This industry is rapidly changing. The new consoles will not see nearly as many triple-A games as their predecessors given the ridiculously high cost of development (hence the crash) and the higher risk. Developers are moving onto the smaller companies with lower budget and focusing on a wider install base (PC/Mac/Tablet/Phone). I actually feel bad for people that rushed out and bought the current gen console. I guess they can use it for other things like movie streaming, etc, but the current gen consoles for gaming is not going to happen.

Hopefully after the crash, the industry will recover by building tools and hardware to decrease the cost of developing triple-A titles, but I doubt that will be the direction. I'd really hate for the next 10 years to be low-budget mobile games and early access PC/Mac. That's not what I care about as a gamer. But I have a bad feeling it's going to be fairly boring for a long time after the crash until VR comes along. But I have my doubts about the first versions of VR tech, too. The industry is currently in a sad state... and it's an end to an amazing era that I'll never forget.

And if they don't make their games multiplatform, will you dual boot?

I doubt many people will, so all of this will live and die by how many devs will make their games available on SteamOS. (I hereby nominate we refer to it as SOS from now on.)

If you can get enough games on SOS, it'll gain traction, but if it's just a few devs, then there won't be anyone interested in running it, which will lead to even those devs saying there's no point in it.

So far the signs are encouraging, but it's going to take a concerted effort of at least several years before any sizable number of people switches.

That's exactly what will happen. Software sells hardware and most devs aren't going to jump on that platform. Valve is just a little too late to the game. Times are going to change in the next couple of years, particularly for gaming, and I very much doubt there's going to be a need for a dedicated gaming machine (consoles go bye bye) other than VR headset wars. It's going to be a race for the next big thing. Gone is the day of staring at a monitor unless you want to play any of the many shitty, unfinished, early access games (just the thing that Valve is doing to Steam). There's just a lot of money going into completely new technology.

There just so expensive, to say it replaced laptops. You can get decent general purpose laptops for $300-$400. The cheapest i3 Surface is $780. How can you think to replace something with double the cost? MS you funny guys.

These are targeting businesses, not the casual user that just reads web pages and plays mobile games. And you cannot get a decent business laptop for $300 - $400. At that range, they're all sh!t. So yeah, go buy a chomebook if all you want to do is browse. If you want to get real work done and also have a touch interface, MS is going in the right direction while the casual companies neglect business needs.

Prison Architect is criminally fun. Anyone who loved the old tycoon games should get this one. Despite the theme the game really is fun to play. Perhaps the best tycoon game since Rollercoaster Tycoon 2.

I don't buy games that have been in alpha for years. Do you work for them or something?

Everyone knew this sh!t was going to happen after the sale to Facebook. This is just one example of why the community was against the Facebook deal. First of all, too much exposure to a pile of money. Secondly, Facebook lost in a similar lawsuit in the past. Thirdly, it's obviously a politically driven project (what they didn't want). Personally, I think they shouldn't have sold out to the behemoth that is Facebook and just continued to try and fund it privately with private investors. They could have gotten enough interest given the technology and the people working on the project. But greed got to them, too, so I really can't give them any sympathy for what's happening, even if there are no damages.

Windows 8 sucks

You've just earned the "I'm cool" badge of the day.

How about this, clicking one checkbox makes win8 a better win7. But I know that's too confusing to the hipsters.

"iOS7 style changes coming to Mac OS X"

Cool, now all the hipster Windows 8 haters have something new to complain about. The general hipster uses Mac OS X for their desktop (because they've abandoned Windows), and Android phones because the iPhone is too "mainstream". So now what will they do? Switch to Chromebooks? Yup! lol
