You also have to remember that the patch does not contain all new data. A lot of it has just been modified. A file could be 500k but they could have just modified 30 lines in that file.

Yeah, thats true.

Actually if I was to write a program it'd be fairly easy. If I didn't have a size restriction/limitation, I can make fairly huge file sizes.

Thats great and all, but I'm sure EPIC is trying to make the footprint of the patch as small as possible (for d/l purposes) so I'm sure they are not doing any 'tricks' to inflate the file size as you would try to do. id didn't try repackaging Quake 3 into a new game a year later with a MSRP of $40-50 :).

In the midst of everyone's Doom as of late it's still good to see another slice of this game coming our way.

No doubt, I have to go back and finish PK SP, I just finished the Palace right before Doom 3 came out so it may be a while before I get back to it. But PK is a fun game, reminds me of Doom and Serious Sam.

take it you're not a coder?

Bugfixes are small. Optimizations are bigger. (In patch form, anyway.)

Oh, and you are a coder huh? Go write me ANY 12 MB program without graphics to bloat the file size, hope you like to type because you'll be at your keyboard for a very long time. As a matter of fact, just go into Microsoft Word and create a 12 MB .doc file. You have to write a LOT of code to get to 12 MB. If there are no graphics files within this patch then there is a HUGE amount of code that was written. Get going now, write me a 12 MB program, just make it say "I'm a sucker", you can use printf() or cout, doesn't matter to me. Report back to as to how many lines of code were needed to compile it into a 12 MB program. I expect to see "I'm a sucker" many times over.

I wonder, does the need to engage in that sort of activity make you more or less pathetic than they are?

LOL, thanks for wasting your time on that one, that just cracks my shit up. Hahaha, oh man.

I mean this is what EA has done for years with all these sports games, works for them why not for Epic?

And I bought those Madden and NCAA Football games for years.. and guess what, I never had to d/l a 12MB patch or any patch to fix any problems, in fact I have never seen any problems with EA's sports games. And EA sports games are driven by real world rosters unlike UT's no name robot things.

The week UT2004 went on sale I remember getting it for $30, which is great for a brand new game I never owned.

I completely and totally agree that you got a good price at $30 for UT2K4 and not ever paying for UT2K3. Now, with that said, would you have bought it if it didn't have ONS? The reason I ask is, ONS could have AND should have been a FREE MOD for UT2K3 therefore making UT2K4 a totally unnessesary product especially for those that did buy UT2K3 and were told that vehicles WOULD be in that product at some later point but EPIC never delivered and thier marketing cleverly positioned the vehicles for a new release of the same basic game. It's just wrong.

I couldn't give a shit about the other gametypes since the only reason I bought UT2k4 was for onslaught.

Y3ah, to bad 3PIC charged $50 bucks (y3ah, the smart on3s pay3d l3ss but some fanbois still pay3d $50 for 3ach) for the ONS MOD. I hop3 3PIC is pl3asuring the MOD T3am that d3v3lop3d ONS for th3m b3cause if ONS wasn't part of UT2K4 it would have b33n the same as... *gasp*... UT2K3...

3PIC Mark3ting "UT2Kx fanbois, fish in a barr3l, 3asy mon3y, w3'll just charg3 th3m $50 for a MOD that should hav3 b33n fr33 for UT2K3!!!!"

3PIC Shar3hold3rs "Hahahahaha!!!"

3dit - Sp3ll3d som3thing right, had to corr3ct it to mak3 it wrong.

it looks like UT2k4 will win their game of the year award for the PC

Or HL2.. it's still gonna be 2004 when it comes out... maybe.

Firstly, a 12 MB patch is HUGE regardless of if its a engine or game code fix, so there were some big problems somewhere.

Secondly, I'm bored and just wanted to fuck around with the UT2K4 fanbois, Tom and Tony! fulfilled my goal, thanks! Fish in a barrel...

This game's engine is 2+ years old and they are releasing a 12 MB patch? Oh yeah, UT2K4 came out 'oh so' bug free...

I have no problem giving it a second chance, they seem to have worked very hard on getting it better so why not. It's only a demo, not like I/you have to pay for it. Deformable terrain is a cool idea, good for the future of gaming.

Where do I find that option?

Check DoomConfig.cfg in the Doom3/base directory.

I think you are getting confused with Paul Steed

I think Paul was fired by Adrian and Kevin, the artist's, because Paul went along with John Carmack in wanting to do Doom 3 and Adrian and Kevin wanted to do something new and original so they were pissed at him.

Hmmm...

Seems if you go into the DoomConfig.cfg file and change

seta si_maxPlayers "4"

to

seta si_maxPlayers "6"

then start the game, the game itself will change the setting back to

seta si_maxPlayers "4"

by itself. So it is hardcoded into the game... thats not very sporting of id to do.

Be nice if we could experiment with what can and cannot work w/o having to hack the exe or have the SDK... if anyone knows how to 'fix' it I'd love to hear from ya...

Oh well, the SP version is nice eye candy thats for sure, I've enjoyed myself so far. I find my character getting 'stuck' on the environments a lot, that gets a bit frustrating, but everything is very tight.

I seem to recall him being fired for having an opinion that differed from John's.

Nope, Carmack fired American and Romero for the exact same reasons, Carmack thought they were both being unproductive. Tim Willet was the golden boy at designing at id and American wore out his welcome.
