The 'new' trailer on their site makes me think that this MMO is a cross between 'Starship Troopers' (the movie) and .. some ... Anime Cartoon... I guess. Pretty strange, very... different.

1. The fat pipe is only necessary because the game has thousands of people connecting, WTF is the point of thousands of people connecting? I can't stand more that 60.

If you can't stand more than 60 people then why are you even bothering with this thread? It's about an MMO, you know that right?

2. Well in BF/MOH/COD we use our own servers as the game does not have thousands of people.

Yeah, duh, thats why you don't have to pay to play, bandwidth isn't free and your server uses a mere fraction of an MMO like EQ. One EQ 'server' is actually a huge farm of servers that supports the game world, you have a dinky little server that supports 64, wow.

3. Yes we get continually added content in the form of free patches and upgrades.

Sorry, you get a few patches here and there, not even close to the amount of content an MMO gets updated with, not even comparable at all.

4. You can never keep hackers at bay

And games like EQ have been hacked how many times, DAoC? I haven't heard of any news at all, ever. If you can show me proof I'd love to see it.

5. Give me a break

Take 5, I could really care less.

Weak argument sorry.

The only thing weak here is you comparing a dinky little 64 player game to a product that supports thousands of simultaeous (-sp) players. Plus I wasn't arguing at all, just stating well know facts that seem to allude people.

I can certainly respect the fact that you don't like MMOs, personally I'm burnt out on the Level Tread Mill that was EQ and DAoC (UO was more fun). But coming here and comparing a game(s) meant for 32/64 players to a MMO is just cute.

Well, have fun with whatever you do, I'm gonna go watch my President explain to me why my soldiers have to die in a suck ass middle eastern country. Life is good

It's the principal of the idea of paying to play a game I already paid for!! It's like buying a music CD and then being told, "oh sorry, if you want to listen to it that will be £9.95 a month please"

But what if that music CD had tracks constantly added to it for the $9.95 a month? I think some of you are forgetting that MMO Dev's are constantly adding shit to the game servers and clients as time goes on. All the MMO's to date have done this. Your $9.95-14.99 a month subscription goes towards:

1) The fat pipe that allows thousands of users to connect to the server, that in and of itself is expensive.
2) The cost of leasing the huge cluster farms of servers that the game runs on.
3) Continuely added content that you don't always nessesarily see unless you read the update paragraphs when you log in.
4) Maintaining you character and it's 'stuff' on the Database and keeping hackers at bay.
5) The electricity and other HVAC to keep the server farms up and running almost 24/7.

Comparing BF 1942/UT2K4 and other 32/64 players games to a MMO is comical at best. Most of the Servers you play on are run and paid for by Joe public because they want to and if 'they' weren't around you would have hardly any servers to play on. Give me a break people. What a joke. And I don't play any MMO's at the moment, I just understand the model, and it does make sense.

Someone really needs to come up with a pricing model for us gamers with jobs where the $50 gets you three months of average play time and then you can pay to play after that.

I'm in the same boat, check out Guild Wars.

And for those slower than usual, the majority of complaints to the game are based on the level treadmill, not PvP. It's not "fun" to level grind, hence the game isn't really that fun unless you are a powergamer, which level-based games are built for.

Well, that just describes just about every modern MMO out then, so they must all suck with that logic. EQ has a level grind but the Carebears don't seem to mind 'that' for some reason, must be that only L2's Trend Mill design sucks? Must be.

Thats like marrying a woman who has a zit riddled face, smelly ass, and reptile like skin but great nipples. The whole package just doesn't add up to a good deal.

LoL!

Certainly I'm not going to sit here and defend L2, I'm just getting tired of people crying about games that are Marketed as x and then people coming and saying game style x sucks, I lost my sword, when they knew that it was game style x before hand. Same thing over on the PainKiller Thread, it's been marketed as a Serious Sam/Doom/Quake Old School FPS from day one but people still come and complain about how it's like Serious Sam and they hate Serious Sam so they hate Pain Killer. It's like duh, no shit.

Serenity Now!

if you mostly enjoy games like Quake and Serious Sam, then PK is the way to go. If you prefer titles like Half-life and Ghost Recon, I go with FC.

That is really all ya need to know. Painkiller from day one has been marketed as a Serious Sam/Doom style FPS.

The only variable being how much higher/lower you are than another character which determines the outcome. I'm not against PVP dipshit, in fact I love it. Games like UO (before carebear patching) and Shadowbane were brilliant games for their design (if not their technical execution).

*Hands sinner's saint a tissue*

Sorry dude, didn't mean to make ya cry, k? I can still see your bottom lip quivering now. You just sound so pansy ass coming and crying about a openly marketed PvP Game. I don't think you played UO, to much of a pansy in my book. Just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it's intended for trailer trash, I mean, who the fuck are you? What makes you so great? Right, absolutely nothing. No, you go fuck yourself holyer than thou pansy ass. Haha, man.

Maybe they were waiting for just the right moment to announce this, but I bought mine at EB last Wednesday.

Today is the 'offical' launch day. Getting it earlier was just a nice-ity by Dream Catchers (Publisher). I got my copy this past Friday and absolutley LOVE the game. I'd like to see the Dev Team, People Can Fly, do well so we'll see another game from them, they did a GREAT job with PainKiller.

The deerhunter of MMORPG's has finally arrived for the trailer trash gamer. Just try not to get your mac and cheese on the keyboard while you play (they didn't put this in the manual so I thought I'd give the tip)

Or could be read as a game not made for skilless pussys. There are plenty of PvE MMO's where you can pull mindless AI MOB's into a safe and carefree corner and slaughter them for hours, go have fun. Really, why don't you just go chat with friends in mIRC? Playing a PvE MMO isn't much different. Some of you are just comical, the game clearly markets itself as a Pure Open PvP, why the confusion? If your to much of a pansy ass to play an open PvP MMO, then why are you even worrying about it?

I was happy, I died soon after, besides experience loss, part of the penalty was dropping the one healing potion I had found. Died 10 minutes later, dropped the new broadsword. Alt-F4, start -> control-panel -> add/remove -> lineage 2 -> uninstall. Quicker than I can type it.

Well, ya know, almost all the new MMO's are PvE so people who have separation anxiety from thier Bit Map property can go around without having to worry about anything ever hurting them without thier 'consent'. You have to allow some games to be different so people who don't cry over losing their precious sword can have some fun too. You would have also never made it in UO where a PK can take ALL YOUR STUFF AND MONEY in one sitting while you get to watch it happen :). The game clearly states that it is OPEN PVP, so why do you come here and cry about it? What exactly were you expecting? Jeez man.

I played the Open Beta for a bit:

1) Just can't do the Trend Mills anymore, easier or not I'm just burnt out with that play style. It'd be nice to have a passive skill based system like UO again.

2) Open PvP stops camping cold in it's tracks, very nice IMHO. Refreshing to see a Fantasy based MMO go all out PvP again, it was needed.

I won't be buying it, not woth the level trend mill, if it was skill based then maybe, but EQ ended my leveling days. I think the game, besides the leveling, is cool.

Tribes 2 was awesome until we lost the password...

Haha! That just happened to me recently. Since 2003 was such a suckass year (IMHO) I tried to re-install T2 but I can't remember my pw either, but oh well, they are going to give it away free so I can just make a new account :). Thank you UT2K4 ONS for holding me over, sorry, but won't be needing you much longer!

For people who are able to play the game with no problem, how's the game itself? I need some more opinions before I buy it

Lets just say I had to stop the game for about 5 minutes so I could stop laughing. I hit the first 'minor' boss in a church, when entering the church I had collected 65 souls (they give you 1 health each) and knew that the 66th would turn me into a Demon (you turn REALLY nasty), I walked through the door, killed a witch and collected her soul (getting my 66th soul ), the 'minor' boss came and many minions came at me as I turned into the demon and I concluded to blow the living fuck out of them all, it was a beautiful massacre and I laughed my ass off and had to stop playing for a few minutes. The atmosphere is dark, sounds are demonic and spooky and the action is wild.

Is it like Quake and Doom 2? Yeah, remember a full room of Demon's in Doom 2? You could charge in, circle stafe around the whole room and get the Demons to get pissed at each other and start killing each other? Pk has this feature and I love it, you can circle strafe and the MOB's will get pissed at each other and start to fight, cracks me up.

Great game. Period.

Isn't that UT2004 mod.... Troopers.... gonna do that?

Actually, Troopers is a UT2003 Mod and from what I hear, UT2K3 MODS will not work with UT2K4 because of some NetCode overhauls. Maybe the Mod Team will port it to UT2K4, but when I played the Mod on UT2K3 it kinda sucked so...

No proplem here playing PainKiller either, I think it's the best game I've played in years. The only thing I did notice is that if I use any other Disc besides 3 of 3 I get an Assertion Error when starting the game, but I just use Disc 3 of 3 and it works so big deal. Too bad some of you are gonna miss out on a great game, oh well

... No, I'm pretty sure that's still five uninspiring guns with alt-fire modes.

... Yes, I'm definitely sure that there are Prim + Alt-Fire combos that do TOTALLY different firing modes then just Prim or Alt Fire THUS making it a third friggin firing option for each weapon (or could be looked at as an equiv to three weapons).

I just bought the Retail version of Pain Killer... man, Demo 1 or 2 just doesn't do it justice. There are 5 guns, each has 2 firing modes so that makes it equiv to 10 guns... BUT each gun has a combo fire (primary AND Alt, aka you can fire the pain while it it spinning) increasing that equiv to 15 guns. The first official level kicks the 'Towns' level (Demo 1) ass. Back to playing, this game is FUN.
