Forgive me if I missed it, but I don't see "Massively Multiplayer" anywhere in that press release. They claim "large head-to-head guild battles"... 64 players is "large".

We'll find out in a few weeks, one way or the other.

What is all this talk about RtR being $30? It's $20... I got it at $15 when Best Buy was having a special on it.

$20 for 6 maps, all with new vehicles to play with is not that bad, considering that most add-on packs out there seem to be $30 or more.

Here's what I'd like to see, even though we probably won't:
Play around with them newfangled pixel shaders and render the game through a foreshortened "focal length" filter... so it looks like you're playing on a scale model set.

Guys, the fileplanet "demo" was actually a multiplayer BETA. This is what the original guy was complaining about, not the demo. The DEMO doesn't have any of this DX8.2 stuff.

Nor does it have that EZ Pad spyware crappe the MP stress test beta had.

I just installed it... been looking forward to this game for a while now.

From http://www.quinion.com/words/articles/bump.htm:

"[Halloween] was formerly the eve of the Celtic festival of Samhain, a name which comes down to us directly from the Gaelic for the end of summer. When Britain was Christianised, it become All Saints' Day, or Hallowmass, itself a shortened form of All-Hallows' Mass, where hallow is the Old English halig, 'a holy man', from which we also get our words holy and hallow. The eve of this important day was All-Hallows' Even, which has become corrupted to Hallow-e'en, now more commonly spelt Hallowe'en or Halloween."

Interestingly enough, the day *after* All Hallows' Mass, November 2nd, is celebrated in Mexico as the Day of the Dead... at any rate, have a happy All Hallows' Eve!

I'm in the "I'll wait for the first few patches" camp. Sure,Bioware had a decent track record with the Infinity Engine, but that's because they only had to write the engine *once*... the rest of the games were just adding content and some engine tweaks.

The NWN engine is quite a bit more complex, and much more "green"... unless they're inhumanly good, it'll take them at *least* a couple of months to stabilize it post-release. By then, there should be a community of mod makers creating cool online content for the game, if that aspect takes off like they'd hoped.

Besides, the $60 ticket makes it easier for me to wait for special offers and the like... yow...

No drivable vehicles, NO MOD SUPPORT, rated T for Teen, and using the Unreal Engine (as opposed to, I dunno, Unreal 2 engine?).

I dunno, last time I saw someone boasting about US Army involvement it was either S&S's Real War or Novalogic's Delta Force... no warm fuzzies there.

But hey, at least it's free...

Wait a second. You're playing a persistent-world simulation where you're a character stuck in a persistent-world simulation patterned after "our" real world.

Does that mean you're playing The Sims?

"The winner-take-all geopolitics of mid-21st century Earth have given way to a struggle over more basic concerns: food, water, reestablishing civil law and cleaning up biological and nanotech fallout."

I'm guessing they chose the "JC Denton crashes the world" ending from DX1 to build up the story for DX2. If so, I'm somewhat disappointed. Sounds to me like they took out all the cool pseudo-real-world conspiracy stuff and philosophical undertones and replaced them with a post-apocalyptic milieu. IMO, a more poignant plot twist would have Denton join the ranks of the Illuminati, only to find out too late power *does* corrupt, and now it's your job to stop HIM. Oh well.

Let's hope at least the multiple-paths gameplay holds up.

It's an old story. Owner of a franchise hires a completely new set of developers to create a sequel/spinoff to it. Cavedog is not involved, Chris Taylor is not involved.

I'd usually give the new team the benefit of the doubt, except... Phantagram are the same peeps that did Kingdom Under Fire.

I had heard tales of Mr. Smart's ego, but I always thought they were exageration, tall tales in an industry full of hyperbole and hype. But seeing his own words like this... wow. Words fail me.

Hopefully he'll get help before it's too late: as it is he sounds like he's not too far from clinical delusion!

GreenMarine:

You mean Gamespy *doesn't* offer developers big bags of money for exclusive rights to their demos?

Frankly, I don't blame devs for taking the money. Devs get some production capital, Gamespy/Fileplanet gets its premiere, and everyone gets mirrors of the files within hours. I can deal.

#4, it's new architecture. It's not the same hardware, clocked up (like the GF3 TI is to GF3).

I think everyone agrees that taking some old hardware (NV17), and slapping a "GeForce 4 MX" name on it is a low, underhanded trick.

A problem was that Molyneux was too in love with his high concept design paradigm, of minimizing the interface as much as possible. So the game never gave you nearly enough feedback about *how* to do things, and by the time you figured out whether you did it right or wrong, it's far too late to fix it so you have to start over again! This was especially bad with creature management, I restarted the game 3 times until I just gave up and checked GameFaqs for some advice.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game. There's some truly revolutionary technology underneath (AI, morphing graphical meshes), but there's also some fundamental design flaws.

B&W 2 is under the supervision of a different designer, so maybe they'll relent on the "pure" interface...

I don't have that problem with Win2K/IE 5.5, for what's worth. I'll let Flying Rock know...

Umm, #6? I think he was just making a joke. Relax.

And, BTW, it's "sanscrit" and "which you haven't"... thought I'd mention it, since you're talking about proper language and all.
