( though i wish they hadn't spoiled the whole "strogification" thing )

I'm betting that was a hard call for our PR people. It's a really great element to the story, and you want people to know there's a real story here so telling people about it will show them that. But you also risk giving the cool stuff away, of course. All in all, I think it's good they talked about it. I think it really piqued people's interest and showed that Quake 4 does have a huge story.

Here's hoping people enjoy it!

woops, meant to quote the earlier post that asked how this was done since an SDK hasn't been released.

I haven't looked at the mod yet, but there are some scripting files in the .paks, so if you take a look at those you'll see some neat stuff. That's likely how this one was done.

DOOM3World.org is one place I know that has a lot of tutorials, so check them out.

It recently won of the top AIAS awards and got a BAFTA award, but that's only two of them. D.I.C.E. also awarded it Computer First-Person Action Game of the Year, Computer Game of the Year and Overall Game of the Year. But that's only a few - it's actually gotten over 70 GotY awards (so that's including not just North America).

I've been using Family Tree Maker for years, and I LOVE it. Also, I recommend both ancestry.com and genealogy.com for the best places to start when it comes to researching your family history. I've been doing that on my family since I was about 12 and with the help of other researchers I've been able to contact through those sites, I've traced my family history back 13 generations and it's still going.

Stephen, if you've got any questions about genealogy and researching, give me a shout.

I've said it a billion times before, but that is the ONLY way you will EVER get a publisher to take notice.
You can harp and complain about the demo not being distributed all you want, but if you all still rush out and go buy it, Activision is just going to shrug their shoulders while looking confused, and keep on doing what they've been doing.

There's a problem with this policy, though: the company in question has to know why you're not buying their game. Is it because you felt it was poor quality? Was it because you didn't like the non-inclusion of feature X, Y, or Z? Or is it because you were dissatisfied that they didn't release a demo?

Unless you can tell the company why you're boycotting the product, the end result is the same: the company has no idea why sales were low and therefore will not know what changes to make to rectify the situation later.

Apart from Battlezone, wouldn't C&C: Renegades also qualify? Yeah, it was part FPS, but there was resource control there. I'd say it was a RTSS.

I can get the net on my cell phone, but I still can't read Blue's News on it...anyone know why? For some reason the standard URL gives me a 500 server error on my phone. Is there a special URL cellphones need to access it?

GotY content Jun 18, 2002, 13:29

You can already download all of the extra content from the Game of the Year edition for free. Packaging it onto a CD allows people who haven't bought the game yet to get (1) the most up-to-date version of the game without downloading patches and (2) a bunch of stuff on one CD without going around the web to find it.

The most important content that will appear on the GotY edition that you can already get for free is the Game of the Year map pack -- 4 new multiplayer maps (6 on the CD if you didn't grab Ice and Tram already) from Nerve and Splash Damage. Some other stuff in there includes the Making Of RtCW movie "Behind Enemy Lines" (about a 13 minute movie with interviews with all the dev teams, etc.), game demos, all the desktop wallpapers that we released, and some more stuff.

So if someone didn't buy the game and they want all that stuff but don't want to go scouring the net for it, it's all right there. If you don't want to get the GotY edition, however, you can still get all that stuff for free.

Hey everyone,

Just to clarify the discussion...

The GotY edition isn't geared toward people who already own the game. In fact, we're releasing the maps that will be in the GotY edition for free for those people who already own the game.

The GotY edition is meant for those people who haven't bought the game -- this way, they get all the maps that have been released up to this point and a bunch of other stuff in one package without having to download it all separately.

A few days before the test's release, I worked with Shacknews/Speakeasy, HomeLANFed, LANtrocity, and Ausgamers in Australia to set up a fleet of servers ahead of time. I didn't want the inevitable to happen at release: no servers except for many one or two set up at Raven, so people start throwing servers up on their cable modems, which would give players a laggy connection and framerate issues -- in another game's test release, this happened and people thought that it was the game's fault.

But even with 20+ servers ready at release, they were STILL packed, and I'm getting word that there's hardly an open slot in sight!

The readme was sent to the news sites with the location of the patch, attached to the email. Unfortunately, few chose to link to it. To Blues' credit, though, the readme was available on the download page.

Those of you having problems with the installer -- please read the readme, this is covered. It explains how to extract the files if the installer isn't working for you.

To add to Xain's post:

Yes, the first release was a multiplayer compatibility test -- it was designed to ferret out any problems with different hardware configurations that could crop up so that the developers could make sure the final product was as compatible as possible.

The second release was also a test, and while it was also a refined compatibility test, it was also tweaked to improve gameplay. Those who download the test are generally experienced, hardcore players, so they know their stuff -- if there are any problems with gameplay, these players are going to find them. The developers wanted to see how gamers used the classes and their abilities and wanted to make sure that any problems in the gameplay were ironed out.

This release today is an actual demo, not a test, and is designed to give those people who didn't buy the game a chance to try it out and see if they'd like to get it.

For those that are having problems with the map pack installation:

Not sure why it's not working (it's worked for most people), but we're sending out to mirrors right now, including Blue's, a special no-installation file, which is essentially the pk3 file of the map that you can drop into your directory. This should help. Should be up on sites shortly.
