I don't think it will a dozen different Steam-like applications. There are very few development houses with the resources that Valve has to design, develope, implement and install a Steam like service. The cost of all that bandwidth alone dramatically raises the price of entry for such a service.
At most, I think you see 3, maybe 5 max, such Steam like services (Valve, 3DRealms, Epic, may be id software, EA Games and Ubisoft are my predictions). Most of the smaller developers will simply contract with the big boys.
And before someone says that having 3-4 Steams is a bad thing. Remember competition is a good thing. As computer games inevitably march towards a digital-only distribution system, Steam like services will become more prominent.
