What does an earlier launch have to do with the status of the competition?

The original (intentionally misleading) assertion: " ... or if you basically had a monopoly on online sales for decades until Epic decided to challenge you. "

The launches of the competition show that Valve had plenty of competition before Epic started their store. The fact that none of them supplanted Steam's position as market leader doesn't mean that the competition didn't exist. The revenue of the rival platform is completely irrelevant, since the operation and marketing of those platforms are funded by their owners' other very revenue streams. EA's 2011 revenue was 3.8 billion, much more than Valve as a whole at the time. EA didn't release Origin as their store and then just let it run as a totally separate and unfunded business entity.

Second misleading assertion: Monopoly, implying that Valve threw its weight around like Microsoft to maintain its position. https://steamdb.info/stats/releases/ shows only releases starting 2006, but ok, let's make 2003 the start of Steam, 2005 the first 3rd party titles, and then it took until around 2009-2011 for Steam to really became somewhere that 3rd party titles really needed to be on in order to sell (leading to Greenlight being set up in 2012 for titles that didn't have big publishers behind them, which would automatically get them on Steam).

Third misleading wording: Decades, word choice invoking something like JP Morgan type monoliths and Epic coming around finally to challenge the ancient institution. Epic is older than Valve, Steam hasn't been dominant for decades, and Epic is not some David figure out to slay Goliath. They're just another Goliath.

Epic is not even one of the in the first five competitors to Steam. Direct2Drive, Windows-Live/Microsoft Store, Origin/EA Store, UPlay/Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Amazon Games, GOG (though arguably GOG has a different target audience) all existed long before Epic.

Monopoly? I guess if your definition is the dominant player in a market, though I'd ask what monopolistic practices you could point to. Steam is not preinstalled on computers like the Microsoft store, and they have like 3 first party titles that they've kept exclusive (on PC). Their competitors are not some upstart Davids vs Goliath, Microsoft, EA, Activision Blizzard are all are bigger companies with more money, and Ubisoft is sizeable as well. All of them and took their titles exclusive for a while in an attempt to gain customers, without actually providing a better experience, a better client, or better features.

Decades? It hasn't been 20 years yet since Half-Life 2 was the first game offered on Steam (November 2004) so it's not decades for its existence. Steam also didn't even sell third party games for the first few years and wasn't a major player until many years after that.

I wonder if it's going to work like The Lost Vikings when you're playing solo, switching back and forth to use their tools.

When you borrow excessively, it raises the question of whether or not you have your own ideas. There's probably more to the game than the trailer showed, but the amount of copying of the art direction and trailer angles is very high.

Every last second of that that trailer was scripted. In real open world gameplay, enemies chasing you aren't going to zoom past you so you can chase them instead and show off the autolock on shooting power.

So their team-based co-op first person shooter is being bumped by their team-based competitive first person shooter. Never mind that they're a small studio trying to release two games back to back, why are they making two games that are so similar at the same time?

I guess it's been long enough to call it a remaster. At this point, they could just easily drop an HD texture pack and call it a day. Of course they wouldn't however when they can double dip and grab plenty more moola.

The important part is the reworking of the shooting, because none of the older GTAs controlled well compared with even contemporary 3rd person shooters.

This is the most recent version of the game, they're going to drop their first-party racing sim series without something to replace it? Forza Horizon is NOT a replacement. Maybe it doesn't bring in the money.

So, if you PURCHASE the game, you can keep playing it and can re-download it later as well. If you get it through gamepass, I assume that's not true when they get EOL'd.

They announced the sequel last year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bfC-vvlbHc Dropped the number though.

So did any Blind people actually complain to Twitch or was it a bunch of white people trying to feel like they're doing something? This is useless corporate signaling on the level of the Aunt Jemima change. Costs them nothing, benefits no one. If Twitch really cared they'd implement accessibility functions into their site, but that'd require real work.

Gee, why do I feel skeptical about a game developed in a few months at most? And look, it's another Eastern European studio whose other games are fake-ass "simulators" with fake gameplay trailers.

Fake game. There's been a certain trend of Eastern European made "games" in the past few years that are have 100% pre-rendered trailers designed to look like actual in-engine gameplay if you're not paying too close attention. Atomic Heart Mother was the first one I can remember, another egregious one was Trans-Siberian Railway Simulator. The dev's other "games" listed on Steam are all like this: Rollercoaster Mechanic, Wedding Designer. All prerendered non-gameplay, all destined to be never released.

There's a few smooth-brains in the thread, rolling their eyes at VR and wondering what the point is if VR is just going to be modded out. That always happens, and it's always ridiculous. It's a new medium for games and a new experience.

Should Nintendo not have made Super Mario 64? Obviously they just wanted to sell Nintendo 64s, the greedy bastards Rolleyes . They're keeping the game out of the hands of people that just want more 2D Mario games!

Now it's one thing to say the tech isn't developed enough for you or that it's too expensive, but to decry the idea of it? Gdamn moronic. No, people aren't dumber than you for buying into it, they're smarter because they understand the potential of it and have disposable income to spend. Assuming civilization exists in 20 years, VR is absolutely the future of gaming.

GOD! I am so sick of Tim Sweeney ignorant bullshit! Sure I don't dont know how to make it work, but I am at least smart enough to know that it's fucking easy.

Do you think that everyone has gigabit internet to be able to download it incredibly quickly? Do believe for some reason that having all day 1 purchasers download it at the same time on launch day is not going to result in slower deployment compared to spacing out preloads over a week or two?

Wait, are they still doing the one action skill per character/class thing? In the era of hero shooters and RPG shooters, that seems so dated. Hell, it felt dated even in Borderlands 1 considering it was supposed to be bridging Diablo and shooters.

Steam sucked ass when they were the pioneers, plus they started out with way less resources than Epic has now. That's not good enough anymore, yet all these publisher started storefronts- Uplay, Origin, etc. still start out terrible and only work up to barely passable.

If they don't come out the gate with all the features Steam already has plus some extra features to differentiate themselves, then it's clear they only intend to compete based on forced exclusives.
