I watched him coding some of the engine the other night on his streaming feed and these screenshots shown here are through various stages of development when testing theories and different methods. I saw him go from having static blocks (a la Minecraft), to having editable blocks that you alter in real time yourself like a basic 3D modelling program, and that you see here in these screenshots is the stages of this.

These came from twitter where he was messing around and prototyping different things for a laugh such as adding the wood texture from minecraft to the polygons he has in his prototype engine.

I dont agree with everything Notch does from a business point of view, such as how slow and incomplete minecraft is with a shed load of bugs and stuff, but I feel I ought to at least set things straight with the comments in this thread that these screenshots are from the "finished" game. They clearly are not. They are from the first few stages of development of his level designer. Moaning about how crap it looks this early is as stupid as moaning how bad Quake 3 would have looked before any texturing and animation and even the rounded vertices used for archways and stuff. Its work in progress.

As a big fan of Terraria this is sad news. I would have gladly ponied up cash for an expansion or decent DLC, like the rumoured new "dimensions" and stuff.

Oh well, its a shame but life goes on.

Thanks for the awesome game thats given over 100 hours single player experience at a low price.

Bodycount (the band) was awesome. Saw em once in 1994 at Sheffield Octagon (UK). They rocked the place, one of the best gigs Ive been to.

I agree Endo, it is past its prime, but it is still top of the MMO's. It will no doubt continue to decline until such a time that people have moved on to Titan or whatever.

Since quitting WoW personally, I have moved on and tried other games and activities I didnt have time for whilst playing WoW. Ive just got Borderlands (yeah im well behind!), was addicted to minecraft for quite a few months, Terraria is also a top fave and just recently as well Ive got back into programming and switched to Android development as a hobby and possible small income generator on top of my 8-4 mon-fri job. Im enjoying myself now and spend more time with the wife than turning up to fail-raids with my ex guild.

I dont regret my time in WoW, as I did enjoy it up until a year ago when I quit for a short while before returning to Cataclysm. Again I got bored of that quickly and havent been on since.

Bit late to the comments but heres my take. I played WoW for a few years since vanilla (not very early vanilla mind, but maybe a couple of months before TBC) and back then it was hard to level. The quests were not streamlined like they are now.

Back then it took me a long time to level, mainly because I didnt know what I was doing as a noob, but also because there was no big yellow arrow pointing where to go, where to find such-and-such, where the next quest is and so forth. People had to Look for what they were after. Look for the next quest and so on.

Now, WoW is so easy to level and play because it holds your hand the whole time whilst questing. You get to top level in next to no time due to fully streamlined quests that you never have to go hunting for the next place to go. That for me is whats killed it.

I would estimate when I first started WoW and got past the "I have no idea what im doing" phase, then it would take me a few month to get to max level. Now, its about a week or 2 for a casual to level to max. Heck on my first character I stuck with (Warlock) it took about 8 months to get to level 60 - probably because I sucked, but also because I liked exploring and finding stuff for recipes without buying them off the AH. That doesnt exist anymore, its all about BUY ALL OF THE THINGS!!! and ACCEPT ALL THE QUESTS WITHOUT READING!!! and that isnt a game, that isnt fun and its why in my eyes WoW is dying.

I read the other day at work on a forum that 4chan had a rally to get people to put negative reviews on metacritic for Portal to lower it down a lot. Cant find the link now im home unfortunately though, but after checking the reviews straight after I read about it, sure enough loads of people were downmarking it to the figures 4chan mentioned of 3's and 4's...

Agreed, saying that this game is shallow is quite ignorant.

Ive had it since Alpha and I still play it these days several months later. Its only recently I've delved into building contraptions such as mob traps with automatic retrieval of the loot as well as using redstone wiring to give an indication a mob has just pegged it so to speak.

You get out of it what you put into it. It is a highly advanced virtual lego/meccano kit with optional dangers that you play with on the computer. If you stare at a box of lego/meccano pieces and cant be arsed to think up a design and make it then you wont get any satisfaction out of the game.

Coming from WoW for the last 4 years to Rift due to boredness, I have to say I love it so far. Had it a couple of weeks and enjoying it tremendously.

As for the poster below who talked about being coin locked everytime he logs in since the new patch, read the fracking notes! You get coin locked on first log-in with new patch - check your email for the code to unlock it. Its a security measure for your benefit. Once code is put in then it will unlock and be fine from then on.

The wife was caught out by the web ads "virus".

She was on ebay and asked me to look at something on the screen and a fake antivirus program was on screen saying it found a lot of virus infected files.

It stopped every program you tried running including Task Manager and when I rebooted the computer it had replaced the wallpaper and stopped all non-essential programs from running again.

Could only remove it in Safe Mode by looking at the prefetch folder in windows to see which .exe files had been ran. It wasnt even listed in any of the windows startup files in msconfig and such. She also had an antivirus installed which did not stop it nor pick up on it when running a scan in safe mode.

Very nasty one but luckily easily removed once you found the malicious program on the HD.

Whilst I appreciate people "not getting it", I would hope that you know there is two versions - free which is lego building, and paid for which adds survivor mode which is more of a usual single player game with mobs and crafting tools and exploration etc..

It's like stealing cars from car lots at night

How is downloading a copy (emphasised the word copy) of a game like physically removing a car? If you want to put a similar comparison in then you need to compare going into a shop and stealing a hard copy of a game direct off the shelf.

Downloading and physically stealing are NOT the same thing. Never have been. Never will be. Downloading a copy does not physically remove anything and no money has been lost UNLESS the person was going to go to the store to buy the game but then thought "Nah I'll download it for free instead" and only in that situation is it lost money.

Someone saying "what the hell I'll download it to give it a try since its free" when they had no intention of buying the game is what is counted in piracy money loss figures when it shouldnt be.

I admit I fall into the latter. I buy games I truly wanted, and download ones that I would never buy but wouldnt mind giving a quick blast on. Ones I wouldnt get my moneys worth from as I will probably play twice and uninstall. My Steam list is full of games I have bought because they are worth it.

I thought the game to be borderline average. It was alright to have a quick go of every now and then but I hated the feature of having to identify gear/items before you knew what the stats were. I believe this was in Diablo which I never really played enough to remember but as a gameplay point of view I thought this slowed things down and made it annoying. If you knew gear stats off the bat like in WoW (which I am an avid player of) then it would have been so much better.

The bugs were awkward in the game and from what I remember there were some issues with certain effects that caused an FPS decrease by tenfold to unplayable levels, such as from 45fps down to 2-5, even though there was no particular reason why as nothing taxing was on screen. Talking simply looking at a hole in the ground, or at a single crate.

If the bugs were fixed and the bad gameplay decisions were removed such as the identifier I mentioned, I reckon I might be tempted to play this being sub free. But only a might. Depends how improved it is..
