yeah, that was one of my favorite strategies in TA, having aircraft being constantly produced and patroling around my base, with aircraft repair pads place at intervals under their flight paths, so it was a self repairing, extended line of sight defense system that could also be used for quick offense
i think +shootall is for telling all your units to attack enemy structures and resource collectors automatically, instead of the default behavior of only auto attacking other combat units
i love how TA is so dynamic
it was really fun playing lan games where we'd team up and divide the responsibilites, like i'd focus on offensive units and maneuvers, someone else on defense and long range artiller, and someone else on resources and base management

I love Total Annihilation, and I really hope they don't dumb it down. It's the only real time strategy game that I've really liked, most the others seem way too cut-and-paste. (Starcraft, ughhhhh...) There's a lot to keep track of and lots of tactics and things that can happen, which can make it pretty hectic, and it has all the major elements of warfare. Multiplayer games could be anywhere from 10 minutes to hours, depending on the game type, map, and resource settings. You could always play the dead commander ends game mode, and those were usually a lot shorter than the kill all units matches.

The whole thing about "wow, i beat you with a 1/2-1/3 of your displacement" is overdone, what matters more are power to weight ratios, horsepower and torque curves, and gear ratios. When I beat a v8 camaro or something in my SRT-4, I'm not like "I have less than half your engine and beat you", I recognize that my engine is heavily turbocharged, going a different route to high output than just sheer displacement, and that it was a good matchup.

The SRT-4 can also run with muscle cars, but don't know if that one's in there.

edit: hmmmm... they've got a regular, 2 door neon, yet no SRT-4... dumb

could put new meaning to the term "leveling treadmill" ;-)

i think it'd be awesome to have VR games where you had to use your whole body and stuff though

Don't know about the avionics, but the flight modeling should be better than any of the Janes stuff, and that's what counts. ;-)

I'm really looking forward to trying out the P-47 with its 8 .50 caliber machine guns. I'm usually into the more nimble or lighter planes, but I haven't really flown the P-47 before, and it should be modeled very nicely in this. It's a rugged, powerful airplane, and it should be very nice for strafing.

Nascar 2003 online mode has been one of the most compelling online gaming experiences for me since Allegiance; it's awesome.
32-42 max players in a race (not sure exactly how many it maxes out for online, but I've been in races with more than 30, and the full offline field size is 42), bumper to bumper, going 3 wide and drafting. There's lots of strategy to it also, like when you get in a draft line with other cars, if you all work together and keep close you can really fly around the track and catch up to people ahead of you.
It also has a ranking system and records stuff online, so wreckless drivers are penalized with a bad laps per incident rating and can't advance in ranks much.

Planetside is sounding better every time I hear about it. That real-time, full-scale Global Weather system sounds awesome, and should add a very nice (and new, as far as I know) element to battles:
"The Global Weather system is up and running. When viewing the global map, you can see weather patterns moving across the world. As you watch a weather system sweep across your position on a continent, you can switch back to first-person view and actually watch the thunderstorm/snowstorm/etc. move into view. Now you can actually plan to "attack under the cover of the oncoming storm" and air units need to be alert to changing weather conditions as visibility can change radically."

I ended up trying and returning a few soundcards for Battlefield 1942. (I was also tired of some other problems I'd had with my Audigy under Windows XP)

The Hercules Fortissimo III works the best from what I've tried on my Windows XP machine. It's one of the few cards I tried where running sound settings maxed doesn't consume lots of resources in Battlefield 1942. The sound quality, especially the positioning, is good also, and it seems to be stable. The Fortissimo III has a retail price of only $50. :-) I found mine at CompUSA. If you get it, make sure you install the new 5.01 drivers from www.hercules.com.

Also, set Sound Hardware Acceleration on and set Sound Detail to Low.
