A new Biggest Loser study shows why it's so hard to lose weight and keep it off

The NY Times also has a great article on that scientific study, which has been published in the journal Obesity . The study, and the commentary in the Times article, are really insightful:

NY Times Biggest Loser article

Link to full study, and summary

Note that the Times only allows 10 free articles a month, and the original study may need a subscription but the summary page is free.

A physicist in one of the forums I hung out on had issues with the study format itself. It used a particularly high-aiming equation to estimate resting metabolic rate, whereas the standard equation that is considered most accurate was 50% closer to actual measured metabolic rates. The regression curve that they used was possibly overly simplistic, and he also mentioned from his reading of the study that it appears that if metabolic "damage" can occur, it seems to be related not to the rate of caloric expenditure that your lean mass goes through, but moreso there's a reduction of calories based on fat mass.

Takeaway: The study has some issues that might skew the data towards the more dramatic end of results, and if you lose weight, do yourself a favor and bulk up a little and put some muscle on.

Why is it so hard to keep off weight? Well, cause when you are on the show, it is YOUR JOB to work out all day and be fit. In the real world, we have real jobs, families, responsibilities. Finding 4+ hours a day to go to the gym just isn't that easy....

I got pneumonia a couple months ago, super bad. I lost 12 pounds, I have been able to keep 10 of them off just by managing portions. I love to eat, but reaching that age where I need to keep things in check a bit.....sucks. If I were to get back into a workout routine, I am sure I could drop 10 more, which I think is considered "ideal" for my body type....currently cruising along at about 185 (took a dump this AM).

The biggest thing I have noticed with my weight gain is the sleep apnea has kicked in. The more weight I gain the worse it gets. Drunk sleeping also makes it 10x worse. I think 200 is the most I have put on. It is crazy the difference between 195 and 200, not just a mind thing, but how I "feel" moving around.

Now that Cruz and Kasich have dropped out leaving the official candidate of the WWE, it ensures that the USA will get its first female president.
order has been restored to the force

One would think that's how things will turn out, but then his run to become the candidate was initially seen as a joke. Also while I don't think it will happen with Hillary, the democrats have a tendency to trip and fall flat on their face when they should have a slam dunk.

The fact that each party had several years to get ready for this election, and this is who was put at the head of each party is a joke. Our system is beyond broken.

Thousands of taxpayers affected by W-2 Phishing attacks this year. Thanks Linux Security via Ant.

We have taken a lot of reports of people that tried to file their taxes and received information that their taxes had already been filed.

Rule of thumb, file early.

Watched some streatms this AM before I went to bed - I dunno, just looks like a colorful mess....I think old man syndrome has fully set in.

/During the streams - I noticed the "matchmaking' was painful as hell. They took the CoD route, and I quit watching when I noticed at the lower right it said "Battleborn on Facebook" then refreshed with "Battleborn on Twitter".

This is what I love about what the USA was SUPPOSED to be. If you don't like the laws in one state, you move to one that you agree with. But now the feds are in our daily lives for some reason..........

Someone here said they got cheats for The Division, because well, cheats.

Head explodes.

Theres also a post by one of the guys working on the game saying that the hacks can't be addressed with nothing less than a total re-write of part of the code.

FAIL

Glad I passed on it. Cheats were bad in BETA, I assumed they wouldn't address it. They don't care. They sell games and wash, rinse, repeat, move on. BF games and COD games are rampant with cheats. Not one developer cares. They feign interest for headlines, but in reality the game is ruined for most of us.

So your assumption is that I am out there killing all the bad guys? hahahahahahahahah Awesome. You truly believe that I would risk everything I have.....everything I have worked for.....my family, my kids, my house, my freedom, to deal out "justice" for some shitbag turd? This is how absurd your world is. This is how absurd all of this anti police stuff is. You morons believe that we actually would do that. Unreal. We don't get these jobs overnight. This isn't fucking McDonalds. The sky is some sort of magical wonderful for people like you isn't it?

Unfortunately, a few apples are spoiling the whole bunch and making the news on a daily basis. See: Freddy Gray, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Dontre Hamilton, Eric Garner, John Crawford, Walter Scott, etc. Right or wrong, there's a perception out there that the police are dispensing justice on the street.

You can cast that net far and wide for anything. It is foolish to even consider. (looks at how this conversation started......shit)

I'm sad I missed the actual response and that the rest of this got so ugly. I hope you don't feel like people won't give your opinion a fair shake, I was just in a meeting otherwise I would've read and responded

eh, typical BN stuff. One word gets focused on, yelling, name calling, hurt feelings, then the wheels fall off. No biggie! I somehow got turned into a hooded executioner. Think I'll go start a new game of Skyrim.
