That was amusing yesterday. They were fired, btw. Not sure if that included the third one whose ID was borrowed.

The whole incident is so bush league.

Dark City is the movie your thinking of, a very good movie even now, go rent it if you havent see it.
Directors cut coming out in 2006, according to Ebert in this "Great Movies" article... SPOILER WARNING

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051106/REVIEWS08/511060302/1004
I believe more than ever that "Dark City" is one of the great modern films. It preceded "The Matrix" by a year (both films used a few of the same sets in Australia), and on a smaller budget, with special effects that owe as much to imagination as to technology, did what "The Matrix" wanted to do, earlier and with more feeling.

<flame retardant suit>I frown upon this sport, with its lack of clocks, inconsistently sized playing fields and schedules that allow a team to lose 50% of your 160+ games(!) in a season and still make the "playoffs", while teams that did better do not (though football is running that risk too this year with the beloved 'Norris' Division). Bleah. </flame retardant suit> All IMHO, of course. I also hate sports with any form of "judging" - yeah, I'm looking at you, Olympics.

Someone should start a "demanded sequels" website.

I'll vote. Tack Starcraft II on there too while you're at it.

Sounds like a hell of a risk to me. And a lawsuit from a former employer just waiting to happen...
It absolutely is. I know of one company in my area who lost some developers to a direct competitor who made highly similar products. They went after this smaller shop pretty hard; at one point the CEO was making moves to buy the shop just to fire all the folks who absconded there.

On another (mostly related) note, there was a semi-prominent IP lawsuit a couple years ago regarding some code that had been 'reused' in a commercial product by a publicly traded company though the code had originated from a developer's former employer (it was Computer Associates code, IIRC). The company got sued, settled, paid off CA. After that case resolved itself, the publicly traded company pulled the plug entirely on the particular branch that had partaken in the code reuse. Shut the whole shop down because a couple developers had been foolish and screwed over their employer with their good intentions.

Software/IT is a horrendously immature industry, in many ways.

Ugh. Tom Brady must be pretty pissed off at his defense by now.
That Int in the 2nd quarter looked well timed. After a little stall by the pats offense, they managed to turn off that particular Colts charge.
We'll still probably win the Super Bowl, regardless.
Something I've wondered about. Pats are now 4-4. How many .500 teams have gone on to the superbowl? Wish there was an easy way to find that out. <shrug>

If you're talking about ex-cop Rich Laporte, I believe he had some severe health issues due to lingering effects from the gunshot wound that led to his retirement and he had to give the website up.

My advice to game programmers: You should know what your company's legal agreements allow and don't allow. Use your own judgment and be careful.
It's a tangent (wild tangent? - er, never mind that), but he's absolutely right. You could get your ass handed to you. A company might not be able to enforce those "non-compete" clauses, but they sure as hell could get the state to enforce the "no theft of IP" laws.

All that being said, at each and every one of the... jeez, seven software industry shops I've worked at, programmers were very liberal with their backup policies. And many non-developers would retain spare copies of design documents, document templates, procedure documents, etc etc. It behooves us to not reinvent the wheel - in code or in procedures.

Also, damn near every contract I've seen when working in professional services (and sometimes commercial software) includes references to items developed or thought up on company time and/or using company resources will belong to the company. Phuck nose how enforceable that is. Of course, what developer doesn't do side work now-a-days?

I only finished it all last week (secondary, primary and mystery quests), but my thoughts from the below link still stand. It's just amazingly linear. It's a dungeon crawl on rails, not really an RPG. It's fun amping up your characters with the skill points and gear, sure, but once you hit around level 39/40, there's not much of leveling after that before the game is over. I'm not really keen on playing through again at the next two difficulty levels with just amped up baddies (ooo, a new party member slot, whoopeee). I did find myself enjoying the "pets" thing though, and was tempted to go "all pet" on the final leadup to the last battle, just for a hoot.

It's pretty and it's simple, and with the frequent teleporters, I could pop in, play for an hour or two after work then leave it without feeling like I had to complete a big quest or something. I love the pseudo-seamless loading. Would love to see something on a bigger scale - Act III seemed rushed to me, and this could have stood to be a larger story (only 3 real towns? c'mon)... I'll watch to see what the community does, there were some neat looking conversions for DS1.

(FWIW, since I was too lazy to cut & paste 'em again)

Btw, is anyone else looking at tomorrow's games as "Meh, whatever" and just focussing on Monday? Has to be one of the biggest regular season games in a long time.
Hard to say. Positionally, there may not be the drama/history in the MNF game, but as far as hard fought games go, I think there will be some decent games.

Washington/Philly, Carolina/Tampa have potential to be fun games to watch. And some other games should be evenish; detroit/minnesota, tennesee/browns, so regardless of the positional aspect, they could be schmozzez or good games.

Hmmm...and how much will this run?
Yeah. if it was timed better, be a great way to set up some christmas gifting. :-) Distributed on DVD is a selling point regardless of game, but adding the XP support (with multi, I hesitate to infer) is goodness. Those should run like snot on today's gear.

The first C&C was probably one of the first retail PC games I went out and bought when it was released. I hadn't played the Dune game, but I had played the first Warcraft on the LAN at work, so I thought I had a handle on the genre. Awesome fun. And being able to give the GDI or NOD cd to someone else so we could LAN - very nice. Wish more games had that kind of forethought (or the spawning that WarcraftII had).

I'm surprised at the reaction from the usually coolheaded bluesnews crowd... some of us will take a wait & see attitude.

I will echo the comments about dual and widescreen monitor support though; don't use two right now (just at work), nor do I have a widescreen, but I might again in the future, and love the option.

I prefer DS9 out of the various series, but hats off to Piller as well. What a varied life; the man had jobs as both a censor and a journalist. More on Piller -

On the game completions side (something I rarely manage to do - I know, I know), finished the 1st difficulty level for Dungeon Siege 2; including all quests (the mystery quest too, though I needed web help to figure that one out). Not really keen on playing through again at the next two difficulty levels with just amped up baddies. <shrug>

My brother plays it; it's been his shooter of choice (and I know, I can't stop hearing about his mad skillz and top honors or something) for a couple years. It's almost annoying; can't convince him to try other games...
