1. Prey Jan 21, 2006, 08:31 BicycleRepairMan
Prey sounds really cool from the info in that update, I cant wait to try multiplayer:

Here is this week's NASTY BUG OF THE WEEK*: Occasionally while playtesting multiplayer, the whole game would grind down to a halt for a few seconds before going back to normal. Crack programmer Rich Whitehouse tracked this down to an issue where one of our weapons (the three-legged crawler grenade) was causing some serious issues when it was thrown onto a switch that controls the direction of gravity

And this:

...we're going to play some MultiPrey deathmatch to give them a feel for that side of the game. We've picked out three maps for them to play - one that focuses on wallwalking, one that focuses on gravity flipping, and one that is all about spherical gravity (fighting on small planetoids)

Well, my point is, MP3 is the most used , best recognized standard. All music player sofware can play it, all portable music players play it, new cd/dvd players often come with mp3 support aswell. So why would I want some AAC files etc. thats just shit, because its not a commonly recognized format.

If each of these big companies wanna make their own standard there never will be one. So: just use non-drm'ed MP3.

IMO, until napster, itunes etc starts using open standards like .mp3, quit all the DRM'ing and screwing around, they will ALWAYS be one step behind just pirating the damn mp3s, I mean, I dont mind paying for music, but as long as the free alternatives are better and unrestricted in use.. well why pay for it? Why would I want to buy files I can only use with "Our Own Player", and on a limited number of computers, and limited number/types of portable players?

320 kbps *.mp3 is a good standard. Sell me those. I'll buy.

Oh dear God, Tango! That's not even fucking funny!

Yeah, I'm so glad someone shows signs of support for my campaign to name that guy worst actor ever. I'm not really a SW fan, but he pretty much destroyed episode II for me. what a lousy actor. it was almost funny watching him play angry.

Dude, that "Half-Life" on the iPod Nano was *very clearly* an original DOOM mod that makes it look like Half-Life. While it's neat that they have DOOM running on the iPod, it is supremely lame that this guy lied and claimed it was Half-Life.

Yeah, I thought the same thing actually, doom-like hud and the very familiar green "shrink background", plus the player looked like a dwarf , and did the classing doom wave-walking.

Also, it says its Ipod running linux, and AFAIK, there is no linux-halflife.. so why couldnt he just go "Dude, DOOM on IPOD!!!", that would be cool enough for me.

Everything Bill Hicks said needs to be said again. And again

“By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing… kill yourself. No, no, no it’s just a little thought. I’m just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day, they’ll take root - I don’t know. You try, you do what you can. Kill yourself. Seriously though, if you are, do. Aaah, no really, there’s no rationalisation for what you do and you are Satan’s little helpers, Okay - kill yourself - seriously. You are the ruiner of all things good, seriously. No this is not a joke, you’re going, “there’s going to be a joke coming,” there’s no fucking joke coming. You are Satan’s spawn filling the world with bile and garbage. You are fucked and you are fucking us. Kill yourself. It’s the only way to save your fucking soul, kill yourself. Planting seeds. I know all the marketing people are going, “he’s doing a joke… there’s no joke here whatsoever. Suck a tail-pipe, fucking hang yourself, borrow a gun from a friend - I don’t care how you do it. Rid the world of your evil fucking machinations. I know what all the marketing people are thinking right now too, “Oh, you know what Bill’s doing, he’s going for that anti-marketing dollar. That’s a good market, he’s very smart.” Oh man, I am not doing that. You fucking evil scumbags! “Ooh, you know what Bill’s doing now, he’s going for the righteous indignation dollar. That’s a big dollar. A lot of people are feeling that indignation. We’ve done research - huge market. He’s doing a good thing.” Godammit, I’m not doing that, you scum-bags!
Quit putting a godamm dollar sign on every fucking thing on this planet!
“Ooh, the anger dollar. Huge. Huge in times of recession. Giant market, Bill’s very bright to do that.” God, I’m just caught in a fucking web! “Ooh the trapped dollar, big dollar, huge dollar. Good market - look at our research. We see that many people feel trapped. If we play to that and then separate them into the trapped dollar…” How do you live like that? And I bet you sleep like fucking babies at night, don’t you?”

Ok, I was a little pissed about the whole "yes it will be out sept. 30" deal, up until around sept 23 or so.. Obvious lying like that was not good. But, I am over it now, ok, so should everyone else be. If your gonna hold grudges for old lies, do it for something important, like the JFK murder, or the Iraq war etc, and not video games.

HL 2 is the best FPS to come out in a LONG TIME, perhaps best ever. each to their own ofcourse, but the way you could improvise combat in HL2 , using physics, sawblades, those ball-things, cars traps etc was simply amazing, the innovations like the turrets , antlions, DOG, the Striders, gunships etc.... basically this game was just awesome. most good games have their "moments" like 2 or three times where you just go "WOW, THAT was awesome!!" HL2 had like atleast 15-20 of those moments IMO.

Claiming HL2 was "a big letdown" or "HL1 is so much better" is to me absurd. HL2 was a GREAT game, end of story.

16. Red Orchestra Jan 8, 2006, 06:16 BicycleRepairMan
I say, save you Darwinia/RDKF money, Red Orchestra is coming very soon (to steam) Here's some more info, it sounds so brilliant!

Just to make sure everyone is clear:

- No you can't "dolphin dive/dolphin jump" in Ostfront.

- No you cannot fire while diving to prone, and you can't fire until your weapon is back up after you have landed.

- The hit detection in Ostfront is some of the best your likely to see in any game. It matches the shape of the players body almost exactly, no matter what position the player is in. So when leaning, if the player's head is sticking out, you can shoot it.

- Ostfront features "Crouched Iron Sight Stance Raising" similar to Vietcong's. You can go to ironsights while crouched and your player raises up to fire over short obstacles.

- Leaning has proven to be extremely useful in our playtests. In CQB situations particularly it has really helped create some incredibly intense firefights. Leaning combined with resting your weapon on a wall is a very useful tactic for long range shots with a bolt action rifle as well.

By the last thing you said (leaning + resting weapons).

Does that mean you can easily say, stay to the right/left of a window and then lean and rest your weapon, take a shot, and then return back to your normal stance behind the wall/out of the window seal?

Yes, yes it does

6. Re: Decent little budget title... Jan 2, 2006, 14:17 BicycleRepairMan
only major annoyance for me was that I was unable to respawn.. when dead.. the Game Over screen just stays.. and then I have to press esc, wait for 5 seconds before the main menu appears, then choose new game..

Other than that.. rather average budget-title, noted first-person weapon animation skips/bugs like 5 times in 2 minutes of gaming.. and NPC's saying the same pleasdonthurtme.wav in a constant loop. Things like this takes away most of whats left of my immersion.

Fawlty Towers is the funniest damn show ever.

Quoted for truth. "the duck" episode where he warns, then beats his car, makes me laugh so uncontrollably its actually seriously uncomfortable to see it.

There's room in the world for more than 1 MMO. You don't have to beat the currently most played to be profitable.

Ofcourse, but WOW isnt the only one as it is, and the marked is getting crowded, I'm just saying its a huge risk for a fresh developer, most likely, if they havent released a game, they are probably going to bump into quite a few unexpected problems along the way, and then it would be wise not to make all those first-timer mistakes on a giant project.. My advise: Game developers should start out like all other artists and buisnesses, small first, bigger later.

Best of luck and all respect to my fellow scandinavians down there, but somehow I just dont think a "genre-shattering massively multiplayer game" is the perfect debut-title for a company.. Seeing so many of these "groundbreaking", "revolutionary" titles ending up with either the game gets rushed out, and/or the developer get shut down immedietly following release" or simply get cancelled.. it just seems like a long-shot.

I mean people need experience to launch MMO's .. look to blizzard.. how can Seed ever compete with WoW, it has to be A LOT better, and even that probably wont do the trick..

I would much rather have gone for a small game, like an indie game, and tried getting it on steam. I'm sure the Darwania folks have probably sold tens of thousands of copies already, and they are now probably ready to make something bigger, having the experience and income from Darwania to build on.

Just my 2 cents, its so sad to see games go under.
