Windforce Dragon sends along a new (v1.4) update to our ongoing Ultima
IX: Ascension FAQ. This new update features a ton of additions, including a
giant new section devoted to the recently released patch.
(Rant pulled - see apology).
Reagle Beagle sends word of an update
to the Rocket Arena page
giving CRT's plans for a Q3A version of the Rocket Arena mod, one of the most
popular mods for both Quake and Quake II. The Quake
Info Pool has the release of the BSP Entity Extractor, which can extract
entities from Q3A, as well as Quake and Quake II. The
Bind: Arena has been updated with all manner of Q3A config goodness.
Likewise, Eavy sends word of this directory
where you can also find his config for Q3A, as well as configs for a whole bunch
of other games. Finally, RA2 Inside
and Out has SOBPak7 for Q3A, offering alternative crosshairs, and stuff like
that.
If more than one person is playing Quake III Arena singleplayer on your computer
and you want to keep your game intact, simply rename the
"q3config.cfg" file to something else. When you start the game, you'll
have to re-enter your CD-Key, but the singleplayer settings will be reset. To
restore your game, simply change the name of the file back.
As promised below, here's a
local copy of the Linux Dedicated Server for Quake III Arena (218 KB)
mentioned in Zoid's
.plan. Again, word is a Linux version of the full demo should be out in a
few days.
id Software contract programmer Dave "Zoid" Kirsch updated
his .plan with word of the availability of a Linux dedicated server binary
that will allow Linux server operators to run a Quake III Arena server if they
have the full version of the game. Word is a Linux version of the full demo
should be out in a few days (id's FTP seems hosed at the moment, we'll post a
local copy once the gremlins are out of the wire. Here's the update: A linux dedicated server binary is now available at:
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux/linuxq3ded-1.11-i386.tar.gz
This allows server operators to run a Linux Quake3 Server (full version).
The full linux demo should be out in a few days. It'll include the new Loki
installer.
Enjoy.

There's an
Updated F.A.Q.2 on Raven's support BBS by Raven's Mike Gummelt meant to be
an informal addendum to the original
Elite Force FAQ answering questions that have yet to be added to it, which
will happen sometime soon. Thanks Voodoo
Extreme.

currently in development over at Pandemic Studios.
There are eight
new Venom Screenshots on GA-Source showing off gameplay from Venom, GSC Game
World's upcoming first-person shooter. Venom uses a proprietary 3D engine called
Vital Engine ZL.
HK Developments has posted their
HK-001 Mecha player model for Quake III Arena. The file is available as both a
Windows installer, as well as just the "raw" model. Also, Polycount
(formerly the Q2PMP) has posted a cool new Harley Quinn model for Q3A. One
warning about these models sent in by a couple of readers is that using a custom
model seems to result in being kicked at the end of the match when the map
cycles, we'll post more info on this situation when we find out what's up.
As is their way, Birdman's Lair has
posted new support files for Space Orb users to use while playing the full
retail version of Quake III Arena (the demo support files only needed a minor
tweak to get registered support going).
Another Easter Egg in Quake III Arena. Again, no spoilers, but you might want to
keep an eye peeled for something unusual on Q3DM16 (this one is hard to spot in
normal play), thanks Ash and all the others who sent this in. In other assorted
Q3A stuff, Quake.de has posted German
translations of the Quake III Arena character profiles. Durandal's
Config has a cfg for Q3A said to probably provide "the most fps you can
ream" out of the game. They say the cfg is "now used by people in 5
countries, 2 deathrow members, and countless professional players."
Finally, <@>ReDEyE<@> sends word of a hidden map on Quake III Arena,
saying: "Just bring the console down and type /map test_bigbox and check it
out. It's only good for a boxing (gauntlet) match."
The first official beta of version 5.0 of the The
Weapons Factory for Quake2 is now available. In addition to the new beta
Quake II release, word on the site is that there are "hush-hush" plans
for a Quake III version of the mod.
Well, even though at various times they seemed to be on different production
schedules, it turned out we ended up with an Unreal Tournament and Quake III
Arena release at just about the same time. Not coincidentally, I'm running a
little late this morning... so many games, so little time.
