A new Official Launch Date Trailer accompanies the news with the latest look at the looter-shooter sequel, promising "a glimpse of some of the new movement abilities, devastating action skills, and killer loot that awaits you on the dangerous new planet Kairos." Word is a dedicated State of Play event in the spring will bring what's described as a "full gameplay reveal." In the meantime, here's more from the description:

Second Diablo IV Expansion Next Year

Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson announced today at the DICE Summit that the second major expansion for Diablo IV will not be released for the action/RPG sequel until next year (thanks PureDiablo). IGN summarizes Fergusson's comments, which suggest the schedule for this got pushed back as the ripple effect of resources being shifted to live content updates during development of the first expansion. So the bad news is there will be no expansion on the 2025 roadmap, while the good news is there will actually be a 2025 roadmap:
Speaking today at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, Fergusson concluded his talk by discussing the team's plan to strengthen its relationship with its community by taking a leaf out of the books of both Diablo Immortal and World of Warcraft and releasing content roadmaps. He said that soon, we should expect to see a content roadmap for Diablo 4's 2025 plans, outlining seasons and updates at roughly the times they would show up throughout the year.

However, he said that the game's next expansion wouldn't be on that roadmap. It's not coming until 2026.

"In 2025, or just before Season 8, we will have a 2025 roadmap for Diablo 4. Now, our second expansion won't be on that roadmap, because our second expansion is coming in 2026, but at least players will have the road ahead."

Testing on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S will run from February 27th through March 2nd. This promises a look at "new, never-before-seen game modes, maps, weapons, and more," in this game that "massively expands on the series’ original vision and scale." Here's a bit:
In Splitgate 2, you’ll play as an elite Ace, a futuristic athlete competing in the most popular sport in the galaxy. In your arsenal, you’ll not only have some of the sickest weapons you’ve ever seen, you’ll have a portal gun. We’ve also got unique abilities, equipment, perks, and more, all designed to keep each game exciting and fresh. So, for example, say you’re trying to capture the Hotzone when an enemy throws down a Smart Wall and opens fire, you can counter by opening a portal and flanking them from behind.

While we work to bring this game we love to the next level, it’s also important to us to stay true to where we started: a portal shooter with amazing movement and incredibly satisfying gunplay that’s fun as hell to play. To that end, we’re continually adjusting based on feedback from internal and external playtests to make sure that our portal mechanic, killer movement, and unparalleled gunplay remain at the core of what sets us apart from every other FPS out there.

Crytek Layoffs; Crysis 4 Crisis [Updated]

A post on X from Crytek announces layoffs at the German developer, saying it cut around approximately 15% of its workforce, or about 60 jobs. The announcement says development of the next Crysis game was put on hold in Q3 of last year to focus resources on Hunt: Showdown 1896. That first-person shooter is reportedly still growing, but the company "determined that layoffs are inevitable to move forward." The presumed Crysis 4 remains on hold, and there's no suggestion that this will change any time soon:
Like so many of our peers, we aren't immune to the complex, unfavorable market dynamics that have hit our industry these past several years. It pains us greatly to share today that we must lay off an estimated 15% of our around 400 employees. The layoffs affect development teams and shared services. This has not been an easy decision to make, as we deeply appreciate the hard work of our talented teams. After putting the development of the next Crysis game on hold in 03 2024, we have been trying to shift developers over to Hunt: Showdown 1896.

While Hunt: Showdown 1896 is still growing, Crytek cannot continue as before and remain financially sustainable. Even after ongoing efforts to reduce costs and cut operating expenses, we have determined that layoffs are inevitable to move forward. Crytek will offer affected employees severance packages and career assistance services.
Update: This report originally said 400 jobs were lost, which was the company's headcount before the cuts. Apologies for the error.

ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN in May

FromSoftware and Bandai Namco announce the reign of ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN will begin on May 30th with the release of this standalone ELDEN RING game for PC and consoles. This promises "co-op multiplayer PVE combat against a harsh and unforgiving world" as shown off in This Official Pre-Order Trailer which officially attempts to pay for this right now, promising a "bonus gesture" in exchange (we're imagining a gesture, but it's probably not the same one). Here's word:
Teaming up in squads of three – or daring to go solo – players must choose one of eight Nightfarers, each with different abilities, to outlast a three day-and-night cycle. Players must make split-second decisions about combat and exploration across a map that can fluctuate with different biomes, weapons, and enemies in order to become stronger, and outrun the encroaching circle of fire to be able to take on terrifying bosses at the end of each day. This culminates on the third day, where if players were successful in surviving the night must take on one of the Nightlords – new bosses for this version. Nightfarers must learn to cooperate to take down these challenges, combining their unique abilities together for an unparalleled experience in the ELDEN RING universe. All is not lost for those who fall in defeat. Unsuccessful runs will grant players relics to allow them to customize and upgrade their characters tailored to their personal play styles.

I. Robot Reimagined

Revived publisher Atari announces I. Robot is the latest game from its back-catalog it plans to re-imagine, saying a new version is coming to PC and consoles this spring. The original was a flop when it hit arcades back in 1984, despite the technical innovation of what Wikipedia calls "the first commercially produced arcade video game rendered entirely with real-time, flat-shaded, 3D polygon graphics." It turned out to be one of the last games produced by the original Atari before it was first parted-out and sold off. And like the movie of the same name, it has very little to do with the collection of classic Isaac Asimov short stories that originated the title. The new version will be the brainchild of Llamasoft founder Jeff Minter, and while there don't appear to be an ruminant animals in the Official Announcement Trailer, it certainly displays a lot of Jeff's signature madcap style. Here's more:
BREAK FREE from your creator. The objective of I, Robot is simple: take control of the ox-headed robot and outwit the all-seeing eye. But, remember, AVOID THE EYE at all costs, or else it’s GAME OVER, MAN.

You’ll navigate across a 3D kaleidoscopic visualizer in each level by flipping tiles to open up pathways to escape. Make sure you don’t jump while the eye’s watching, or you’ll be ZAPPED away in a flash. If you make it across the tiles, you’ll have to race down a tube and BLAST away any enemy shapes that move into your path and try to stop you. Don’t get too comfortable, chump. Minter periodically mixes things up with arena levels that will ignite your synapses with onslaughts of lethal enemies.

Control 2; Max Payne 1 & 2; and FBC: Firebreak in Full Production

Remedy's annual report for January–December 2024 is now available, laying bare the finances of the Finnish developer. If the presentation is too snoozy, Game Developer shares the important details, noting that Alan Wake 2 is now officially profitable, Control 2 is now in full production, full production of Max Payne 1 & 2 is on track, and Control spinoff FBC: Firebreak is also in full production. There's also a look ahead and a bit more on the previously mentioned Remedy Connected Universe:
"We have two established own franchises, Control and Alan Wake, which are linked through the Remedy Connected Universe. Remedy will self-publish upcoming games, in which Remedy owns the IP. Growing and expanding the two franchises will be a key part of our future. In addition, we work with a partner franchise Max Payne that was originally created by Remedy," said the company, discussing its long-term prospects.

"By 2030, we aim to be a highly regarded creative studio with sustainable, significant commercial success. We have set ourselves the following financial targets: 1) Double the 2024 revenue by 2027 with continued growth beyond this milestone and 2) EBITDA margin of 30 percent by 2027 and maintain that minimum level throughout the strategy period."

Steam PirateFi Malware Warning

An X from SteamDB shares an email from Valve warning about a game called PirateFi that was pulled from Steam a couple of days ago, shortly after its release. Word is it is suspected that the free-to-play game included malware, which prompted its removal. This warns players who tried it before this was discovered they may be infected:
We are contacting you because you recently launched PirateFi (3476470) on Steam. The Steam account of the developer for this game uploaded builds to Steam that contained suspected malware.

You played PirateFi (3476470) on Steam while these builds were active, so it is likely that these malicious files launched on your computer.

Daggerfall Unity - GOG Cut Delisted

A post on GOG.com announces the delisting of Daggerfall Unity - GOG Cut, the open-source version of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall that launched on the store to great fanfare in 2022. This remains available on GitHub, but GOG explains it is dropping its own version of the project, saying it no longer serves its intended purpose and that it is working towards being able to "publish and maintain such projects better in the future":
We’ll be removing Daggerfall Unity - GOG Cut from our store on February 12th at 2 PM UTC.

We’ve made this decision because, at this time, the pack is outdated and no longer fulfills its purpose of providing a hassle-free modded experience to the game.

Rest assured, anyone who already has it in their library will, of course, keep it.

We’re also working on a solution that will allow us to publish and maintain such projects better in the future, so stay tuned!

Out of the Blue

Rock Hall of Fame Nominees in 2025: Complete List. Some nominees were/are genre giants that will make perfect sense to some and not to others, like Division/New Order and Phish. Some of the acts make me feel old because they seem too recent for this, but that's on me. But who knew it was time to consider bands like Oasis, Soundgarden, and the White Stripes? Conversely, how was Bad Company never nominated before this? Anyway, as I've stated before, I think this should be the Musical Artist Hall-of-Fame or something equally generic so we don't have to keep hearing arguments about genres. But since that name doesn't seem likely to change, it's comforting that Chubby Checker is also on the shortlist so there's the possibility of enshrining at least one actual rock and roll artist into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

And yes, rock and roll is a euphemism for sex, but that hall of fame is a different topic.

Rock and Round-up
