Warhammer: Vermintide 2 - Versus Open Beta

A new trailer announces the launch of open beta testing of Warhammer: Vermintide 2 - Versus, a new PvPvE mode coming to the Fatshark's action/RPG. You can request access on Steam, and word is all are being accepted, and you do not need to own the game to take part. The test is scheduled to run through September 2nd. Here's the elevator pitch:
Vermintide 2: Versus is an entirely new way to play Vermintide 2 with this new asymmetric PvP+E game mode. Engage in thrilling 4v4 battles, alternating between the iconic Ubersreik Five Heroes and the devious Skaven specials, all set against the backdrop of the rich Warhammer Fantasy Universe.

Dune: Awakening Gameplay Footage

Gamescom Gameplay Presentation Video is here with the promised extended look at gameplay from Dune: Awakening. After warning some bugs and lack of polish will be evident in the work-in-progress, Funcom Creative Director Joel Bylos takes us on a look at gameplay in this MMORPG based on the revered sci-fi property. Revenge of the Savage Planet Announced

Raccoon Logic (formerly Typhoon Studios) announces Revenge of the Savage Planet, an upcoming sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet that will come to PC and consoles in "early-ish" Stardate 2025. This promises more of what made the original satirical space opera so savage, serving up this Official Reveal Trailer to prove the point. The clip also shows the follow-up drops the original's first-person perspective for a third-person view. Here's word:

Revenge of the Savage Planet will see you unceremoniously ousted from your mission to colonize space after the powers that be deemed space exploration far too costly and challenging, they ultimately made you redundant during your 80 years of cryosleep. Rogue Waters Announced

Tripwire Presents announces Rogue Waters, a pirate-themed turn-based roguelite from Ice Code Games (Hard West 2) coming to PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on September 30th. Retrieval Announced

333Studios announces Retrieval, a cinematic horror game coming to Windows via Steam and to consoles with a TBA release date. The Official 2024 Gamescom Reveal Trailer shows off some off-the-rails action recorded using NVIDIA RTXDI. Here's word:

Beyond Galaxyland Next Month

United Label announces Beyond Galaxyland will take off on PC and consoles on September 25th, offering a retro sci-fi adventure reveling in the classics of the genre. A Release Date Gameplay Trailer shows off the game's old-school 2.5D graphics and some comedic sensibilities. Here's word on this chance to go back to the future:
Set among the stars, the game follows Doug, a high school student who's whisked away to Galaxyland – a seemingly idyllic, zoo-like collection of planets – moments before the destruction of planet Earth by a celestial destroyer of worlds known only as ‘The End’. God Save Birmingham Announced

Ocean Drive Studio announces God Save Birmingham, a medieval survival game that answers the question what could make life in the middle ages more miserable with zombies. It has a Steam Listing with a to be announced release date. An Official Game Reveal with a first look is described as "a very early gameplay trailer showcasing the progress achieved by a very small team in a short period of time." The clip is quite somber, but word is the game will have its laughs too:
Awakening from a deep slumber, players find themselves the sole survivor in a city overrun by shambling corpses. Equipped with nothing but their wits and fists, they must fight for survival against hordes of relentless zombies. With a focus on realistic physics and character mechanics, God Save Birmingham promises a challenging and often humorous experience as players struggle to stay alive.

Blackout Protocol Becomes Section 13

Ocean Drive Studio announces a new title for Blackout Protocol, saying the upcoming co-op shooter will be known as Section 13. The game entered Early Access with its old title last month, but it's no longer named after a bachelor party cleanup, and its Steam Listing now reflects the change. Word is this comes with tweaks to core gameplay based on player feedback, and a new demo shows off what's new. Here's more:

Dragon Age: The Veilguard PC Features

Journal #4 on the EA website has a new update on Dragon Age: The Veilguard, digging into details about the PC experience in the next installment in the action/RPG series. This includes NVIDIA's Veilguard RTX Announce Trailer, screenshots, and a discussion of specific features, as word is development has involved over 200,000 hours of performance and compatibility testing. If you want to hear about a few advanced settings and options for the PC community, let’s go over that now. We support a suite of Ray Tracing features, as well as an “Ultra RT” mode for extremely high end rigs. We have several types of upscaling available: NVIDIA DLSS 3, FSR 2.2 which has been heavily modified, specifically for the game, and XeSS. Splitgate 2 Alpha

1047 Games is now showing off Splitgate 2 in Germany for attendees of gamescom, showing off the recently announced free-to-play first-person shooter. This is an alpha version of the game, and a chance to check it out is now being offered to those not at the show. The Splitgate 2 Steam Listing has a link to request access to the playtest. Here's a new Closed Alpha Trailer showing off the game's fast-paced 4v4 action and here's more on the plan:
The closed alpha consists of two thrilling modes - Hotzone and Team Deathmatch - across three different maps (Ozone, Zenith and Frontier) and grants players an early look at each of its three factions. There is no time or match limit during the alpha, and it is free to play.

Iterating on the initial game’s success, 1047 has rebuilt Splitgate 2 from scratch. Suit up and portal into the action as an elite Ace, choosing between three factions - each with their own distinct abilities tailored to a variety of playstyles. Mix and match to create the ultimate team and play together to master Splitgate 2’s fast-paced combat unlocking new capabilities along the way.

Marvel Rivals in December

NetEase and Marvel Games announce that Marvel Rivals will launch on December 6th, kicking off a team-based PvP shooter where the combatants are all heroes and villains from the Marvel Comics multiverse. It's coming to the Epic Games Store and Steam for PC as well as for consoles, and word is it will launch with all heroes free-to-play, despite being a free-to-play game. The Official Launch Date Announcement Trailer starts with an animated cinematic before bringing on a look at actual gameplay. Here's a bit on the trailer and the game:
Today at gamescom Opening Night Live, NetEase Games and Marvel Games announced that Marvel Rivals, the new Super Hero Team-Based PVP Shooter that lets players assemble an ever-evolving all-star squad of Super Heroes and Super Villains battling with unique powers across a dynamic lineup of destructible maps from across the Marvel Multiverse, will officially launch on December 6th of this year. The highly-anticipated game will launch with all heroes free to play. Both Captain America and the Winter Soldier will also join the roster, bringing their unique skills and powers to Marvel Rivals. The newest map, the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda, was also unveiled.

Titan Quest II Early Access This Winter

THQ Nordic announces Early Access to Titan Quest II will get underway this winter, giving players a first chance to play this sequel to the 2006 action/RPG. As noted in this post, the game is being shown off this week to gamescom attendees as launch preparations come together. Here's the launch tease:

Atomfall in March

Rebellion announces a March 2025 launch window for Atomfall, its recently announced action/RPG set in an alternate-history exclusion zone in the 1950s. This covers the PC and Xbox editions, as word is PlayStation versions will follow. The news comes alongside a new Gamescom Trailer that begins with the familiar optimistic newsreel that precedes so many disasters before showing off environments and gameplay. Here's more:
Central to the dark mystery is the host of eccentric characters and cryptic organizations that inhabit the quarantine zone. These individuals have been cut off from the outside world for years and left to their own devices, and are anything but normal. Your interactions with them are important and will shape your journey. But be careful, not all survivors are friendly, and you will need to master an array of ranged and melee weapons if you are to survive.

Atomfall is a new single player survival-action game, launching in March 2025. The game is coming day one to Game Pass. It will also be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. Atomfall will also release on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

Out of the Blue

Well the big show is underway in Germany, and it's always fun to have new games to talk about. The time-difference from overseas is good news and bad news for covering this, but we're working it all out. I'd say the good news of the opening ceremony not running too late into the night here is probably the big takeaway. I guess if I had my preference, they'd hold all these game shows in Europe.
