Get The Falconeer for Free

The Falconeer: Standard Edition is now available for free on the Epic Games Store as this week's giveaway. The twist in this aerial combat game is that you play as a bird rather than a pilot. It's for keeps as long as you lay claim by next week, when the store will begin handing out free copies of Floppy Knights. Here's The Falconeer Launch Trailer with a look and here's more:
Soar through the skies aboard a majestic warbird, explore a stunning oceanic world and engage in epic aerial dogfights, in this BAFTA nominated air combat game from solo developer, Tomas Sala.

You take on the role of Falconeer, a powerful airborne warrior traversing a vast oceanic world torn apart by generations of poisonous decisions and dissent. Throughout multiple campaigns, you will experience life from many different perspectives and loyalties as you embark on a journey of discovery, and solve the mystery of the Ursee, its people and history.

John Romero Announces Boxed Catacomb 3-D

A xeet from John Romero announces plans for a "proper big-box release" of Catacomb 3-D, the first-person shooter launched by id Software in 1991 (thanks Time Extension via Frans). This is a piece of gaming history, as it is considered the first modern FPS, and an enhanced version of its engine was used to create Wolfenstein 3D. The rerelease is an ambitious repackaging of a 33 year-old game, with three different versions priced at €69.95 (~$75.50 USD), €89.95 (~$97.00 USD), and €154.95 (~$167.25 USD) due to the inclusion of various physical items like a coffin USB drive, pins, and stickers. All boxes will be autographed, and the pricier versions lean into the retro theme by including floppy disks. On the other hand, for those who prefer to get their nostalgia on the cheap, the entire Catacombs trilogy is on sale on GOG.com, and the Catacomb 3D source code is freely available after being open-sourced a decade ago in case you want to compile your own copy. As is usually the case in this genre, the base game is free-to-play, but there will be ample opportunities to spend while playing. Here's an Official Gameplay Trailer showing off the game's 3D combat, and here's more:

Independence Day Legal Briefs

Out of the Blue

It's Independence Day here in the US, an annual celebration of our divorce from Great Britain a couple of centuries back. Most of the festivities involve cooking out and blowing stuff up, an unlikely, yet popular combo. We're casual participants here in the BlueTower, but we do have a surprisingly good view of the local fireworks from the comfort of our living room, so we can get a lot of the experience without a lot of effort.

Here's hoping you have fun if you are celebrating, but please be careful, as driving and fireworks aren't compatible with the excess drinking that can also mark this occasion.

Independent Round-up
Thanks Ant, Neutronbeam, and Max.
