West Hunt Free Weekend

Another free weekend is underway on Steam, this one is for West Hunt, the social deduction game set in the old west. In classic westerns, the bad guys are easy to tell by their black hats and their, well, badness. In West Hunt they play things closer to the vest, requiring the wisdom of the crowd to suss out evildoers. The free promotion runs for the next five days, and the game is on sale for half-off if you end up sold on it. And this post notes that the top three players on the game's leaderboard for the free week will receive free Steam keys to use or give away. Here's the most recent update video and here's word:
West Hunt is a 1-6 player social deduction game set in the Old West! Among the hardworking townsfolk hides an Outlaw or two causing mischief and mayhem across town. Luckily, there are eagle-eyed Sheriffs ready to sniff them out! No matter what role you play, you're sure to have a hog-killin' time!

More Planned Overwatch 2 Changes

A Director's Take on the Overwatch Website has a follow-up to yesterday's post on revitalizing Overwatch 2. This post from game director Aaron Keller adds more details to the plan based on feedback to the initial announcement. He also outlines changes coming with a few key goals: To make shooting feel better and more consistent, to reduce the effectiveness of both burst damage and in-combat healing, and to give damage heroes more agency in securing eliminations. Here's a bit more on these plans to reinvigorate the multiplayer shooter:
We've made changes to address each one of these. We've added health to all heroes in the game in order to reduce the effect of burst damage, as well as reduce the number of heroes that can effectively one-shot each other. In addition, we've made most of the projectiles in the game slightly larger, which makes it easier to land a shot on other players. This was partially done to compensate for the health increase - to spread damage out to make it feel more consistent. Additionally, Overwatch is a fast-paced game, our heroes are incredibly nimble, and landing shots can feel inconsistent.

We've also added a new passive to the Damage Role that decreases healing done to players that they've damaged recently. The idea here is to give Damage players an increased ability to secure kills as well as to mitigate the abilities of Support heroes to keep targets alive. This should also give Damage heroes an advantage when facing off against Supports.

Jagex Being Acquired

CVC Capital Partners and Haveli Investments announce an agreement to acquire Jagex, developer and publisher of Runescape, although terms are not being disclosed. If it's not clear from their names, the purchasers are a pair of private equity firms, so the announcement is more focused on metrics and leveraging than creation, though this fits in with an existing (and growing) Gaming Fund at Haveli. Here's word:
CVC Capital Partners, headquartered in Luxembourg, is one the world’s largest private equity firms, with over €188bn assets managed within its portfolio. With investments in the global sports field, such as the Gujarat Titans, LaLiga, Lique De Football Professionnel, Premiership Rugby and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), CVC Capital Partners has rich form in growing fan-focused businesses on the global stage. CVC Capital Partners will support Jagex by leveraging its expertise and resources to assist the company’s continued subscriber and revenue growth, alongside its community driven philosophy as it looks to build upon the success of RuneScape and Old School RuneScape and create more forever games under the Jagex brand.

Haveli Investments is an Austin-based private equity firm that seeks to partner with innovative companies, entrepreneurs and management teams. Haveli’s Gaming Fund has previously invested in London-based Omeda Studios, whose title Predecessor is currently in Early Access, Montreal-based Behaviour Interactive, the developer and publisher behind the hit online, genre-leading horror game Dead by Daylight and Tel Aviv-based Candivore, the developer and publisher of the category leading mobile hit Match Masters.
Jagex was acquired by Carlyle in 2021, supporting Jagex with the acquisitions of Pipeworks and Gamepires in 2022, while Jagex continued to deliver year-on-year performance gains.

HELLDIVERS 2 Known Issues

A post from Arrowhead Game Studios has a list of current known issues in HELLDIVERS 2, the third-person shooter that launched yesterday with a few issues (thanks MP1st). This rundown of problems includes suggested workarounds for now along with details on what has been done or is still to do on its end to put things right. Topic include quickplay not working, crashes after successful matchmaking, problems with AMD Radeon 7000-series GPUs, getting stuck on "Press Any Button" on the splash screen, and the game failing to launch for a small percentage of players due to GameGuard false positives. DRM-induced problems are among those for which gamers have the least patience/sympathy, so here's more on what's going on with GameGuard:
What We’ve Done / Are Doing: We’re working with the anticheat vendor to see what adaptations we can make. When we do have solutions, those will be rolled out automatically via the anticheat on game start.

What Players Can Do: We’ve learned that one workaround is to close other running software. We’ve found that the game has a particular challenge running alongside antivirus, fan cooling, or streaming video overlay programs. We would love to have some community support here. If you identify programs that the anticheat software can’t get past, can you let us know? We can work on getting those legitimate programs whitelisted so you can keep them on and still run the game.

Fate/Samurai Remnant DLC Released

KOEI TECMO America, Omega Force, TYPE-MOON, Aniplex (and perhaps others) announce the release of the first DLC for Fate/Samurai Remnant, the recently launched action/RPG. The title Additional Episode 1 "Record's Fragment: Keian Command Championship" is a little clunky, but does give an idea of what to expect. The DLC is not discounted, but the base game, which is required, is currently on sale for 30% off (and the recent demo is still available). The DLC Vol. 1 Trailer takes a look, offering English subtitles for its Japanese dialog. Here's more:
In “Record’s Fragment: Keian Command Championship”, the boss of Babyloni-ya summons Masters and Servants to a mysterious arena, where he suddenly announces the commencement of the Keian Command Championship. In addition to Iori and Saber, players will be able to control the other characters, including the newly playable Rider, enabling everyone to experience the tournament from different perspectives that were not depicted in the main story. Between matches, players will discover new cutscenes and learn more about the characters – and if they manage to win the tournament, players will unlock an ending sequence unique to each team.

In addition to the seven different teams already participating, a new Servant will join the Keian Command Championship: the Divine Spirit Ibuki-Douji! Depending on the team players choose to play as, they may also be able to directly control Ibuki-Douji and fight their way to victory. And once players meet a certain condition, they will even be able to recruit Ibuki-Douji and the boss of Babyloni-ya as Rogue Servants in the main story.

Dead Cells Content Support Ending

A super-late (we know) update on Dead Cells has "an important announcement" from Motion Twin about the future of the roguelite metroidvania. It entered Early Access in 2018 and currently boasts an Overwhelmingly Positive rating based on over 125K reviews. Word is that while quality of life updates and bug fixes will continue, after its next patch the game will stop receiving new content. Or as the post puts it: "Update 35 for Dead Cells marks the end of our creative journey on the game." It goes into detail on how the team wants to avoid putting out "more of the same" content, saying: "it's crucial not to overextend and risk diminishing the unique charm that makes Dead Cells special to us all." Here's the outlook it shares on the future:
With all that said, we are committed to continuing the journey in this amazing world with some really cool new stuff outside of the original game, so that more and more people can enjoy Dead Cells in totally new ways. Stay tuned for more updates about the Animated Series, the Board Game and… the Beheaded appearing in another world?!

In closing, we are wishing the best to Evil Empire on their upcoming projects and want to express our deepest gratitude to you, the players, for your unwavering support and passion for Dead Cells. Your enthusiasm fuels our commitment, and we're eager to embark on the next chapter of this journey together.

Out of the Blue

Wow am I ever captivated by Masters of the Air, the Apple TV+ series about the allied air campaign in Europe during World War II. I grew up fascinated by aircraft and read a lot about World War II aerial combat, though this was more about the war in the Pacific since my other fascination was aircraft carriers. There are so many external details about how things played out in the ETO that make for drama. But it is oh-so terribly tragic. Seeing recreations of the bravery and dedication to each other of these airmen showed is staggering, especially knowing they suffered such a overwhelming casualties. This is hard to watch, but it's impossible to turn away.

Subnautica 2 Not Coming This Year; Will Not Have GaaS Features

Responding to backlash to today's news on Subnautica 2, developer Unknown Worlds posted its own update on what to expect from the underwater action/adventure sequel. First up is word that the game will not launch this year, followed by a clarification of the reference to this being a games as a service release:
A few of you noticed some information shared online by our publisher, KRAFTON 🕵

While some of the news is exciting, we’d like to clarify:

  • Early Access is not intended for release in 2024, but we plan to share a lot more information later this year!
  • In reference to “Games-as-a-Service,” we simply plan to continually update the game for many years to come, just like the previous two Subnautica games. Think our Early Access update model, expanded. No season passes. No battle passes. No subscription.
  • The game is not multiplayer-focused. Co-op will be an entirely optional way to play the game. You’ll be able to enjoy the game as a single-player.

As always, we are so proud and incredibly grateful to have such a passionate and engaged community, who love the Subnautica games deeply.

Ubisoft's Financial Reporting for Third Quarter 2023-2024, showing Q3 net bookings "slightly ahead of target" and "sustained performance driven by high-quality new releases and back-catalog strength." Specifically: "Net bookings of €626.2 million, slightly ahead of guidance at around €610 million. Excluding mobile that included the recognition related to the Assassin’s Creed® Jade licensing partnership last year, net bookings were up 43.1% year-on-year in Q3 and 45.1% year-on-year in the first nine months, driven by high-quality new releases and back-catalog strength." For gamers the big takeaway is the confirmation of launch dates for some high profile releases, saying Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin's Creed Codename Red will arrive in its fiscal year 2024-2025, which runs from April 1, 2024-March 31, 2025. This quarter includes a line-up with Skull and Bones and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown on the premium side, a limited contribution from XDefiant on the free-to-play side, follow-on sales of prior quarters releases, a strong back catalog relying on a heavy Live services program and significant partnerships including the non-exclusive licensing of streaming rights for the console & PC Activision Blizzard games.

Full-year 2024-25
The extent of the FY2024-25 line-up will be revealed in May and will notably include Assassin’s Creed codename Red and Star Wars Outlaws on the premium side and The Division® Resurgence and Rainbow Six® Mobile on the free-to-play side.

Come on you apes, you wanna live forever? HELLDIVERS 2 is now available for Windows on Steam and on PlayStation 5, giving you the chance to defend humanity in this third-person science fiction shooter sequel and its Starship Troopers influence. Here's the previously released The Story So Far Trailer. The launch may be too popular, as PC Gamer notes reports of matchmaking issues and crashes have developer Arrowhead Studios in "crisis mode," with one hotfix already in place which should "improve matchmaking and the most frequent crashes." As for the game itself, would you like to know more?
HELLDIVERS™ 2 is a 3rd person squad-based shooter that sees the elite forces of the Helldivers battling to win an intergalactic struggle to rid the galaxy of the rising alien threats. From a 3rd person perspective, players use a variety of weapons (pistols, machine guns, flamethrowers) and stratagems (turrets, airstrikes, etc.) to shoot and kill the alien threats. Players can also aim down the sights for a more accurate 1st person camera view. Combat is accompanied by frequent sprays of blood and dismemberment as players exterminate the alien forces or players and squad mates are hit by environmental explosions or friendly fire. The Inquisitor Released

The Inquisitor is now available for Windows on the Epic Games Store and Steam as well as for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Originally announced with the title I, the Inquisitor, this action/adventure is based on a book series where Jesus Christ escapes his crucifixion and goes on a rampage, hell-bent (heaven-bent?) on revenge. A cult of inquisitors emerges in the aftermath to make things better with religious persecution, and in this you play as one of them in the year 1500. Sounds like good times for all, but there's always a twist, which is where the game picks up. Here's the Release Trailer and more:
In The Inquisitor, players find themselves drawn into a world of deception and conspiracy. Where every gritty twist and turn in the story of Koenigstein, and the story Mordimer himself, unfolds before the player’s eyes. Each player decision will carry consequence and informs the final outcome, offering branching storylines and missions that will test morality and determine the fate of both the sacred and the sinful denizens of Koenigstein.

With a unique skillset, Mordimer will bring retribution upon the malicious forces that have invaded the city, using his sleuthing abilities to interrogate suspects to mete out judgement in this cruel era of justice. But the mysteries of Koenigstein run far deeper than the faithless transgressions that have befallen the surface. Mordimer will need to descend into the mysterious Unworld ruled by the malevolent Murk, to uncover the mysteries hiding within the souls of the heretics.

Get Republic of Jungle for Free

Gerdoo Games announces the launch of Republic of Jungle into Early Access on Steam, kicking off a new multiplayer social deduction game for Windows. The unusual twist here is that this is free for the next 30 days, and if you snag it before then, it's for keeps. The reason that's a twist is that this isn't a free-to-play game, it contains no ads or microtransactions, and it will sell for $19.99 after the promotion ends. The Launch Trailer has a look, and here's how to get this political party started:
Enter the world of Republic of Jungle as an advisor to President Puma, your stoic political leader and hopeful reelection candidate. As Puma prowls the campaign trail for support, he expects you to fend off the drama-hungry press. Review President Puma’s latest scandals in small task forces and vote to hide the details from the media. The catch? Someone among you is not who they claim to be and will leak presidential secrets to well-known reporter Fiona Fox at every opportunity. Identify the double agent to secure Puma’s reelection chances or face the consequences of Fiona Fox’s strategic undoing.

On Revitalizing Overwatch 2

A post on Blizzard News talks about "revitalizing the Overwatch 2 experience" with updates to the game that was intended to revitalize the Overwatch experience. The main focus is competitive play, and part of the revitalization will be to finally offer some of the information players have long desired about why rank changes (or not, for those who feel they are in MMR hell). Speaking of which, the update includes word that everyone is getting a fresh start with a skill rank reset and a fresh set of 10 placement matches. There are also details on new competitive rewards and how jade is the new gold in terms of weapon status symbols. Here's a bit more on peeling back the curtain on rank changes:
One piece of feedback we heard is that just knowing your rank doesn’t say anything about why your rank went up or down. Competitive Updates originally worked to provide updates that reflected your growth as a player across multiple matches, but with the goal to provide greater transparency in each individual match, we’re going back to updating your rank after every match and showing how much progress you gain or lose between each Skill Division. We’re also displaying Modifiers that affected your last match below the rank progression bar. Some modifiers help provide transparency in the matchmaking for each match, like getting a boost when you defeat a team that was more favored to win. While other modifiers show if your rank is calibrating, like going on a huge win streak, proving you belong in a higher rank. Feedback is a driving force behind these changes, and we want to hear your thoughts on Competitive Play now that you’ll have more context for each game.

Nexus Mods Celebrates 10B Downloads and $7M in Payments

A post on Nexus Mods has the latest metrics on this large-scale repository for game modifications (thanks PC Gamer via Neutronbeam). It reveals the site has now hosted over 10 billion (with a "b" as they like to say) downloads over the years. The site includes ways for modification authors to be compensated for their work, and the update says that over seven million (with an "m" to be consistant) dollars have been paid out to mod authors, a number that continues to rise as it sends out over $300K (with a "k") payments every month:
As we move towards the next 10 billion downloads, we have a lot of exciting developments on the horizon including the future Nexus Mods App and our significant investment in scaling and developing our services and website, for example site preferences and notification improvements.

Our objective is to continue supporting the growth of the community, particularly mod authors, who are the creative force of the site. To date, we've donated $7,034,953 to our mod authors through Donation Points. We are currently paying out over $300,000 per month in donations to mod authors.

GaaS Subnautica 2 This Year?

GameWatcher translates details from Krafton's financial reporting on plans for Subnautica 2, the upcoming submerged action sequel from Unknown Worlds. A report last year said this should be expected in 2025, but this latest update says the game will launch this year with co-op support as one of those games as a service that everyone loves so much:
Subnautica 2 is being developed with Unreal Engine 5, adopting a Game as a Service model. Players will explore an "oceanic world in stunning stylized graphics.".

The report indicates that the game will feature a single-player mode, or players can team up with friends for a 4-player co-op session to "uncover the mysteries on an entirely new alien planet."

Subnautica 2 is scheduled for release in 2024. Currently, details are scarce, with no screenshots or gameplay footage available yet.

Solium Infernum Gets One Week Delay

League of Geeks announces a minor setback for Solium Infernum, saying the grand strategy game will take players on its journey though hell on Steam beginning February 22nd. This is about a week after the February 14th release announced late last year, and the delay is "to ensure the game is as polished as possible" based on feedback from its most recent testing. Here's the most recent trailer that doesn't highlight the old release date and here's a description:
In Solium Infernum, players assume the role of one of Hell’s eight great Archfiends. They must outwit and outmanoeuvre their rivals to claim the vacant Infernal Throne through the mastery of devious political and military strategy. With a wealth of tactics awaiting their disposal, players have to bluff, backstab, and sow betrayal on their path to victory.

The game boasts diverse multiplayer modes, accommodating both time-strapped players and those seeking extended strategic encounters. Asynchronous multiplayer matches support up to six players with turns taken across several days or weeks and requiring just a few minutes to play every day. For strategy fans favouring immediate action, real-time multiplayer is also available.

Whirlight - No Time To Trip Announced

Developer imaginarylab announces Whirlight - No Time To Trip, an adventure game coming to Steam next year with consoles to follow, offering gameplay familiar to point-and-click classics like the Monkey Island series. The Reveal Trailer provides a first look. Here's a bit on the game and more on its inspirations:
Whirlight - No Time To Trip pays homage to point-and-click paragons like Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island while revitalizing the genre through a distinct look. Characters and backgrounds are originally created as 3D assets first, then rendered in 2D to maintain a high visual quality to pop among other modern takes. The result is an immersive and unpredictable spectacle fit for veteran players and newcomers alike.

Whirlight - No Time to Trip begins in the sixties with an eccentric yet genius inventor named Hector. After a dream spurs him to assemble a device made from components scattered around his Venice-inspired hometown of Verice Bay, Hector is hurled forward in time to the nineties. There he meets a determined artist named Margaret. Together, the pair embark on a quest through space and time to avert the planet from global catastrophe.

Out of the Blue

We had a fun outing last night with our friend and neighbor that was a bit unusual. She is from Sri Lanka, and took us to a local Sri Lankan restaurant. We were unfamiliar with the food, which is similar to southern Indian cuisine in some ways and different in others. So it was a great treat to have a native to help us understand and guide our selections. I had kottu roti, and it was fantastic. All in all it very enjoyable, and it was funny to have a short drive to a little roadside hole-in-the-wall seem like a vacation to an exotic locale.
