Indiana Jones and the Great Circle This Year

Bethesda Softworks officially announces Indiana Jones and The Great Circle as the title of the Indiana Jones game revealed in 2021 as being in development at Machine Games. This is being developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games and executive produced by Todd Howard for release later this year for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch. It's a first-person adventure set between the first two movies, and the developers have whipped up an Official Gameplay Reveal Trailer with a look. Here's word:
Set between “Raiders of the Lost Ark™” and “The Last Crusade™”, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle is a first-person, single-player adventure that will take you all over the world, uncovering clues and solving an ancient mystery. Become the adventurer in a race against sinister forces. Your journeys will take you from the hallowed halls of the Vatican and the arid deserts of Egypt to the lush and sunken temples of Sukhothai and the frigid peaks of the Himalayas.

“Our game is about putting you in the shoes of an iconic hero,” says Design Director Jens Andersson. “Since we are doing this mostly in first-person, you have the chance to truly become Indy. First-person makes you part of this world – allowing you to explore and experience things more intimately. What will you do when you’re dropped into this adventure with your wits and your whip? The world of Indiana Jones is a world with mysteries around every corner, where you’re racing against the clock and outsmarting your enemies as you hunt down artifacts.”

Apple Seeks Epic Legal Fee Reimbursement

Apple Insider notes a xeet from gamesfray with the legal documents showing that Apple is seeking a minimum of $73 million in litigation expenses from Epic Games, now that the Epic versus Apple legal battle is over. This is a demand, and it's not clear how likely it is that all or part of that sum will be recovered, but the following posts explain that based on what went on during the case it seems likely Epic will have to pay:
Apple bases this indemnification claim on Epic's breach of the developer agreement (DPLA) when Fortnite suddenly offered an in-app payment alternative.

Early into the litigation, Epic accepted that if it loses on its antitrust claims (as it did), it owes damages.

If Epic had prevailed on antitrust, the contract clause wouldn't have been enforceable.

Apple does this as a matter of principle. They won't leave an amount in the tens of millions on the table. And their overall treatment of Epic, such as not putting Fortnite back, is meant to discourage other app makers from challenging Apple and from breaching the DPLA.

PAYDAY 3 Strike Team "Creating a Plan"

Starbreeze Studios announces plans to address the state of PAYDAY 3, the co-op heist shooter sequel. The game had launch issues and met a mixed reception at best. Or as they put it: "We’re well aware that many of you aren’t satisfied with the game the way it is in its current state." The announcement is the latest in a series of posts about patches and patch delays. With all that, word is the "team is currently creating a plan," which may be a little overdue at this point. The plan is to involve directives from the community:
In order to turn your feedback into action, we’ve put together a strike team of veteran developers from the design, community, communication and production teams with the focus on bringing PAYDAY 3 up to where it will meet your expectations.

This team is currently creating a plan, deciding what will shape the game into the heisting experience you expect from a PAYDAY sequel in both the short & long term.

We want to be careful to not simply react, and deal with any possible improvements one by one with the care, thought and planning they deserve. In February, we will communicate a plan detailing the upcoming improvements and when you can expect to see them in the game.

Rocksteady Founders' New Studio Revealed

MCV/DEVELOP has word that Rocksteady co-founders Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker have "quietly" opened up a new London-based games studio called Hundred Star Games to develop an unannounced AAA project. This follows yesterday's reports about their departure that turned out to be a rerun (apologies). Word is:
On the company’s Great Place To Work profile, the studio describes its plan to create ‘a small team of only 100 industry veterans and emerging talents, who are committed to crafting cutting-edge gaming experiences that inspire and captivate players worldwide’, although there’s no word yet on what those experiences will look like.

Hundred Star Games is also listed on the Companies House website, where it is categorised as working in the ‘publishing of computer games’, as well as creating ‘ready-made interactive leisure and entertainment software development’ and taking part in ‘other information technology service activities’, meaning that the studio may also intend to self-publish its first title, or may provide some publishing and support services for smaller developers as well.

HARM Weather Warfare Announced

Aurora Studio announces HARM Weather Warfare, a survival game set in a world beset by anomalous severe weather conditions (like that could ever be a thing). This features a father and daughter fighting for their lives in and around an abandoned research base. A gameplay trailer takes a look a what to expect, and the Steam Listing is live, revealing more details and a 2024 release window. Here's more, whether you like it or not:
The challenging situation of the trapped family intensifies over time. The cabin where they were supposed to stay burned down with all their equipment, and the car was destroyed. They are forced to create makeshift shelter, search for food, and face an uneven battle with the unpredictable forces of nature. However, it quickly becomes apparent that the nearby mountain emits unusual electromagnetic waves that strongly resonate with water molecules and living creatures, causing not only local weather anomalies, but also changes in the behavior of both humans and animals.

The main features of HARM, including the need for improvisation in extreme conditions and detailed graphics, will grab the attention of survival enthusiasts. All of these elements amplify the feelings of fear, exhaustion, and loneliness that constantly accompany the main character during the fight with the forces of nature. Players must attend not only to their health and stamina, but also consistently monitor hunger, hydration, body temperature, and fatigue resulting from the lack of sleep.

Word is: "Steering the popular genre in a bold, blood-spattered direction, Earl vs. the Mutants swaps dusty dungeon-crawling for a rampaging road trip through infested wastelands." Check out the Gameplay Trailer for a look, and here's more:
Players can trade in those swords and spells for one of the many unique vehicles they’ll commandeer through a post-apocalyptic world overrun by menacing mutant hordes. With a more destructive, confrontational style of gameplay, players can plow their post-apocalyptic death machines through encroaching enemies for maximum carnage.

Designed for short bursts of heart-pounding, high-octane action, each run will help enhance the next as players continue to unlock a gnarly arsenal of modifications for their vehicles, allowing them to channel their inner Road Warrior as they tear through the wasteland, hunting down powerful mutant bosses, and experimenting with badass custom builds.

No Rockstar/Remedy Dispute

There is no trademark dispute between Take-Two Interactive and Remedy Entertainment over Remedy's new(ish) logo's possible resemblance to the logo for Rockstar Games. We noted that this week's report on the topic centered around activity from last year. Now Stephen Totilo xeets that this was indeed dealt with at the time, and everyone is apparently satisfied with the outcome:
UPDATE: A Remedy rep tells me: "There is nothing to see here – this was a discussion between our teams that was resolved entirely and amicably late last year."

"The legal filing was simply an initial formality, and Remedy and Take-Two continue to work together in partnership."

Out of the Blue

We watched the finale of Season 5 of Fargo last night. This went in an unexpected direction, but still fit in with what an amazing experience it was. Besides being a great standalone story, it is remarkable how it revived beats and concepts from the original movie while still remaining so original. Hats off to the creators and a remarkable cast. We may be past peak TV, but there are still apexes to be found.
