Valve Bans Dota 2 Smurfs

A post on the Dota 2 website has word from Valve that smurfing, the act of creating a new account to compete against lower-ranked players and/or misbehave, is not welcome in Dota 2. Word is that more than 90,000 smurf accounts have now been banned for the practice. What's more, since the alternate accounts were traced to their main accounts, Valve will potentially start banning the main accounts of repeat offenders. Here's the deal:
Today, we permanently banned 90,000 smurf accounts that have been active over the last few months. Smurf accounts are alternate accounts used by players to avoid playing at the correct MMR, to abandon games, to cheat, to grief, or to otherwise be toxic without consequence.

Additionally, we have traced every single one of these smurf accounts back to its main account. Going forward, a main account found associated with a smurf account could result in a wide range of punishments, from temporary adjustments to behavior scores to permanent account bans.

SAG-AFTRA Authorizes Video Game Strike Vote

SAG-AFTRA announces its national board has voted to send a strike authorization vote to its members to set the stage for the union's upcoming negotiations for a new contract beginning on September 26th. The Interactive Media Agreement that covers video game performers keeps getting extended after expiring years ago, and it's coming up for renewal again. This vote doesn't invoke a strike, just empowers the union to call one if it is deemed necessary. Here's word:
It has been nearly a year since SAG-AFTRA’s video game contract, the Interactive Media Agreement, was extended beyond the original expiration date as we negotiated with the companies for critical terms SAG-AFTRA members need. Unfortunately, throughout the negotiations, the companies have failed to address those needs. For this reason, the negotiating committee and National Board unanimously agreed that the union should have a member-approved strike authorization in hand when bargaining resumes on Sept. 26.

Although key issues like wages that keep up with inflation and protections against unrestrained use of artificial intelligence are common sticking points in negotiations, the Interactive Media (Video Game) Agreement is a separate contract from the TV, theatrical and streaming contracts against which SAG-AFTRA members are currently striking.

Death or Glory Beta

An open beta test is now underway for Death or Glory on Steam, allowing a weekend-long sample of this upcoming deckbuilding game that shares its title with a classic Clash anthem. Those who access this through the Demo link will have four days to explore the game, build decks, and experience head-to-head duels. There will be a PvP tournament along the way, and all beta participants will receive an exclusive skin as a reward. The Open Beta Trailer takes a look, and here are the details:
Death or Glory works on a very unique turn system, where almost every attack can be reacted to, whether dodged or blocked. Each card uses a speed system, much like the frames of a fighting game, so a heavy attack will still hit over a small block. Managing your resources, including stamina, champion power, and cards in hand, is vital to surviving the arena.

Choose a fighter, venture through the fantasy realms, and build the perfect champions deck in the roguelike adventure mode, which plays like a traditional roguelike deck builder (Slay the Spire, Wildfrost). With multiple maps on offer, all of which evolve and change as you challenge your way through the fantasy realms.

Starfield Thank You

A post on the service formerly known as Twitter offers a thank you from Bethesda Softworks to mark the Early Access launch of Starfield. Here's word from the folks behind the sci-fi RPG:
To all of you who have supported us over the many years and games, a heartfelt THANK YOU for all of your passion and energy for Starfield. We would not have gotten to this moment without it.

It seems like forever ago that we first started talking about making a grand space RPG. It never seemed feasible and we had been lucky enough to create games we (and all of you fortunately!) loved in The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series. Yet, we couldn't shake the idea of exploring the galaxy in ways that only video games could do. And so, we took the leap to create not just our first new IP in over 25 years, but our most ambitious.

Out of the Blue

Monday is Labor Day here in the US, making today the unofficial start of the unofficial last weekend of the summer. As often is the case, our local weather seems quite aware of the change, and it's much cooler today than it's been, as a harbinger of chillier days ahead. It may not be a compete wash for game news, however, as PAX West gets underway today, so something may come from that.

Cool Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.
