Star Wars The Old Republic Developer Switch

IGN has the news that BioWare is no longer working on Star Wars The Old Republic. This was originally reported as a rumor, but Electronic Arts confirmed that Broadsword Online Games is taking the reins of the MMORPG. Word is: "Currently, roughly 70-80 people are part of the core development team of The Old Republic, more than half of whom are expected to move to Broadsword. Those remaining with EA would have an opportunity to look for roles elsewhere within the company, but may otherwise face layoffs." Here's the official statement:
Almost 12 years after launch, Star Wars: The Old Republic remains a success and continues to grow its dedicated and passionate community. We’re so proud of the work the team has done, and the future of the game and the community continues to be very bright. We’re evaluating how we give the game and the team the best opportunity to grow and evolve, which includes conversations with Broadsword, a boutique studio that specializes in delivering online, community-driven experiences. Our goal is to do what is best for the game and its players.

Ships at Sea Announced

Norwegian developer Misc Games announces Ships at Sea, a shipping simulation coming to Early Access on PC next year. Here's the Steam Listing for this sequel to Fishing: Barents Sea and Fishing: North Atlantic. Both previous games are also set at sea, so the significance of the new title is unclear. The Announcement Trailer has a cinematic look, and here are some details to help decide if this is trolling:
Set in the Norwegian archipelago and ocean, Ships At Sea introduces various new and highly detailed service and cargo ships and new fishing methods such as jigging. The game offers stunning graphics and a new economic system allowing players to manage their careers as they engage in fishing, service, and cargo businesses.

With the introduction of multiplayer mode, players can embark on a voyage through the world of ships with up to 4 friends. They can share resources and items, maintain and repair their boats, purchase tools or equipment in the store, upgrade ships, refuel ships at one of the fuel stations, and stock up on essential supplies for themselves and their crew.

Diablo IV Hardcore Challenge Suspended

With Diablo IV officially released, more players have the chance to compete in the competition to be immortalized for being among the first to hit level 100 with a hardcore character. But there's time to take a breath, as Blizzard announces this competition is temporarily disabled:
The level 100 pinnacle challenge encounter has been temporarily disabled as we work to resolve a few items related to this encounter.

We will update the community once this has been re-enabled.

Blackout Protocol Demo

The June 2023 Steam Next Fest gets underway next week on June 19th. It will offer the expected flood of sales, presentations, and time-limited demos. However, Ocean Drive Studio is part of a mini-trend of developers releasing demos outside that window to increase the chances of discovery (the anarchy!). The Steam Listing for Blackout Protocol now offers a playable Windows demo for this top-down, co-op shooter. This post has more details on the news:
Today, we’re here to open up a public demo for Blackout Protocol. The demo features limited content from the earliest parts of the game, in order to showcase what Blackout Protocol is about, as well as to identify and address any bugs or issues for a better gameplay experience during Early Access and beyond.

Below is what you can expect from the demo:

  • 4 playable Agents
  • 13 weapons (unlockable via blueprints) and 5 tactical equipment items
  • All weapons we currently have planned are available in this demo, but only their first few levels
  • The earliest 2 stages of the game (out of a total 6 planned for Early Access)
  • Alternate variants of those first 2 stages, which you'll encounter over multiple playthroughs
  • The first 3 tiers of unlockable Agent Upgrades (out of a total 7 tiers planned for Early Access)

Out of the Blue

I've mentioned before, but few dates from history stand out in my mind like today's anniversary of the D-Day invasion. History is rife with moments where it's hard to imagine what it would be like to be a participant. And as much praise as Saving Private Ryan received for verisimilitude from veterans of the invasion, the courage it took to storm those beaches remains unimaginable to me. Here's a salute to the fallen, and for those who made it out alive, the hope every day after the war was good to them.
