GeForce RTX 4090 Next Month

To the surprise of no one, NVIDIA finally announced its RTX 40-series GPUs at its event today. What may be a surprise is the power being promised, as the 4090 is said to offer 4X the performance of the 3090. Word is this will be available October 12th starting at $1599, and the GeForce RTX 4080 16GB and 12GB will follow in November. This post has the news, the NVIDIA Website has more details, and this trailer shows off the new cards. NVIDIA also announces DLSS 3 the next iteration of its accompanying technology that combines DLSS Super Resolution, all-new DLSS Frame Generation, and NVIDIA Reflex. The presentation included DLSS 3 videos showing off NVIDIA Racer RTX, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Cyberpunk 2077. Here's word:
GeForce RTX 40 Series of GPUs support DLSS 3, an AI-powered performance multiplier that kicks off a new era of NVIDIA RTX neural rendering for games and applications. DLSS 3 builds on the company’s lead in AI-accelerated super-resolution techniques to deliver outstanding image quality and up to 4x the performance of brute-force rendering, plus the quick responsiveness that defines a comprehensive gaming experience.

Powered by new fourth-generation Tensor Cores and a new Optical Flow Accelerator on GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs, DLSS 3 is the latest iteration of the company’s critically acclaimed Deep Learning Super Sampling technology and introduces a new capability called Optical Multi Frame Generation. Optical Multi Frame Generation generates entirely new frames, rather than just pixels, delivering astounding performance boosts. Because DLSS Frame Generation executes as a post-process on the GPU, it can boost frame rates even when the game is bottlenecked by the CPU.

RTX Portal Announced

Included in NIVIDIA's announcements today is the announcement of Portal with RTX, an updated version of Valve's classic puzzle game that takes advantage of the horsepower of NVIDIA's RTX graphics card to add full ray tracing support. This page offers a World Premiere Trailer and says this can be wishlisted right now on Steam (thanks jacobvandy). Here's word:
Portal with RTX exemplifies the incredible power of our new, beyond fast GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards, and the capabilities of our NVIDIA RTX Remix modding platform. Every frame of gameplay is upgraded with stunning full ray tracing, new, hand-crafted hi-res physically based textures, and new, enhanced high-poly models evocative of the originals. Performance is accelerated with NVIDIA DLSS 3, allowing the game to run incredibly smoothly, and system latency is minimized using NVIDIA Reflex. And it was all built collaboratively by NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios.

In Portal with RTX, full ray tracing transforms each level, enabling light to bounce and be affected by the scene’s geometry and materials. Every light is ray-traced and casts shadows, global illumination indirect lighting naturally illuminates and darkens rooms, volumetric ray-traced lighting scatters through fog and smoke, and shadows are pixel perfect.

RTX Remix Plans

The RTX Portal news above includes the announcement that the RTX Remix tool used to create this will be release for free, allowing the creation of graphics enhancement mods for classic games. Here's more:
RTX Remix is able to capture the textures, geometry, lighting, and cameras thanks to an innovative, custom D3D9 Runtime called the RTX Remix Runtime. Classic games like Morrowind use the D3D9 runtime to send draw calls (rendering instructions) to the GPU. RTX Remix Runtime intercepts those draw calls, interprets them into distinct assets, and reassembles those assets into an identical scene. From there, RTX Remix converts the assets and scene into the widely adopted Universal Scene Description (USD) open 3D framework, which is the foundation of the NVIDIA Omniverse platform for building and operating custom 3D pipelines.

Super Buff HD Announced

Developer Buffcorp and publisher Digerati announce Super Buff HD, a fast-paced first-person shooter coming "soon" to Steam. This is a new title for a project previously known simply as Buff, reflecting how even more jacked it has become. The Announce Trailer shows how wildly this succeeds at innovating the genre, showing stylish untextured graphics, and battles against buildings, giant mushroom creatures, and autonomous garbage cans. Basically it makes Serious Sam seem serious. Here's word on the game's tiny development team:
A skate-surf-FPS designed with high-mobility and low-expectation in mind, Super Buff HD is the creation of Egypt-based developer, Buffcorp, aka Omar Samir. Lead programmer and self-proclaimed supreme leader on the project, Super Buff HD is Samir's first 'mostly solo' game, having worked previously as a contract dev on what he describes as "dirty deeds done dirt cheap."

Helping Samir on Super Buff HD are two associates he currently regards as "good friends" – Cayden, who handles all the sounds in the game and occassionally helps out with "some art and level stuff," and Christian, who Samir describes as "a programming prodigy" and "basically the next John Carmack."

Out of the Blue

I mentioned my amazement years ago at how hard it's become for us to get appointments for our annual physicals. It got to the point where we started scheduling the next year's checkups at the end of the years'. It turns out this level of preparation is still not sufficient. We had appointments today, but got the call yesterday saying they need to be rescheduled. It's not like I was looking forward to this, but I was looking forward to getting it over with. They haven't rescheduled us yet, but hopefully our new appointments won't be a year out.
