Take-Two Financials

Earnings season continues, as Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. Reports Strong Results for Fiscal First Quarter 2023. Of course the most fascinating thing about these reports is learning just how many copies of Grand Theft Auto V have been sold, which is now at an eye-watering 380 million. As for the financials, mind the GAAP. Word is GAAP net revenue is up, counter intuitively leading to a GAAP net loss:
GAAP net revenue increased 36% to $1.1 billion, as compared to $813.3 million in last year’s fiscal first quarter. Recurrent consumer spending (which is generated from ongoing consumer engagement and includes virtual currency, add-on content, in game purchases and in-game advertising) increased 44% and accounted for 75% of total GAAP net revenue. Digitally-delivered GAAP net revenue increased 40% to $1.0 billion, as compared to $740.8 million in last year’s fiscal first quarter, and accounted for 94% of total GAAP net revenue. The largest contributors to GAAP net revenue were NBA® 2K22; Grand Theft Auto® Online and Grand Theft Auto V; Red Dead Redemption® 2 and Red Dead Online; Empires & Puzzles™; Tiny Tina's Wonderlands®; WWE® 2K22; Rollic's hyper-casual portfolio; Toon Blast™; The Quarry®; and Top Eleven®.

GAAP net loss was $104.0 million, or $0.76 per share, as compared to net income of $152.3 million, or $1.30 per diluted share, for the comparable period last year. GAAP net loss benefited from the reversal of expense of $47.7 million related to forfeitures of previously granted stock awards.

Marvel's Midnight Suns Delayed

The Take-Two Financials mentioned above mention a Fiscal Year 2023 release date for Marvel's Midnight Suns for PC and current consoles (the other versions are now delayed indefinitely). In November it was announced Firaxis' card-based tactics game was due in the second half of this year. The date currently presented on the game's twitter is October 7th. That would be part of FY2023, but according to IGN, the game is now delayed beyond that:
Speaking to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, he reiterated that this second delay was due to a "search for quality, and a great deal of confidence that we have a wonderful title on our hands and we want to make sure it's as good as it can possibly be." When asked if there was any concern that Midnight Suns would dip out of the fiscal year a second time (aka, get delayed a third time) he replied, "I'm not concerned about that."

ARC Raiders Delayed

A tweet from Embark Studios announces a delay to ARC Raiders, the co-op shooter in the works at Patrick Söderlund's new company. Word is the game is now expected next year:
We've made the decision to delay ARC Raiders® to 2023.

ARC Raiders® is an ambitious game, and we will be using this extra time to expand the experience, and allow it to reach its fullest potential.

We will be diving into more details as soon as we start to test the game more extensively with players.

The excitement around ARC Raiders® since its reveal has been so encouraging for us, and we truly appreciate your support.

Get Despotism 3k for Free

Steam is now offering Despotism 3k for Windows, macOS, and Linux completely free (thanks RedEye9). It's yours to keep as long as you hit the old snag it now button by midday Thursday. This indie strategy game solves the problem of AI enslaving humanity by putting you on the side of the AI. Here's more:
Humanity is enslaved by an AI… which is awesome, because we’re on the right side of the conflict. Exploit puny humans to extract power and build your own empire! You’ll have to keep track of them to make sure they don’t succumb to exhaustion and hunger… although the weakest ones can always be thrown to the Bioreactor.
In other words, this is a resource management sim with rogue-lite elements, dramatic plot, and an abundance of pop culture references. Also, jokes. Slaughter has never been so fun!

Out of the Blue

We're greatly looking forward to tonight's episode of Better Call Saul. This sense of anticipation is a mixed bag, as it's the penultimate episode of the series, and we are certainly sad it's ending. But I am pleased with how we navigated this split final season. Like with Ozark, we saved up the first half of the season. We timed things pretty well, and are completely caught up as of last week. This gives us the chance to watch the conclusion without too much fear of spoilers, while also avoiding the agonizing hiatus in the middle of the season.

Round-up the Usual Suspects
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.
