Survarium Ends Next Week

Vostok Games announces that Survarium will come to an end next week, as the servers for the zombie survival game will go offline on May 31st (thanks Rock Paper Shotgun). Vostok is located in Ukraine, and previously explained how the war was affecting the game: "At the moment Survarium is still available, but we are not in a position to work on further updates. Vostok Games team is safe, and we will keep you posted!" The new post does not mention the ongoing war, and it's not clear how that plays into the news. Here's word:
A bittersweet day approaches. On one hand it is good to look to our future but on the other, it is difficult to say farewell to an old friend. Survarium will go offline for good come the day of May 31st 2022, 23:59 Kyiv time.

We truly cannot express our gratitude towards all of your many years of support, new and old players alike. Through the ups and downs many of you stood by us in solidarity. That is truly something special that we will always be grateful for.

While we close the book we will always have fond memories! A new chapter awaits us and our eyes are firmly focused on the work ahead.

Remember to follow our social media pages to stay in the loop with all future news from Vostok Games.

Golfie Early Access

Fore! Early Access is now underway on Steam for Golfie, the roguelike golf game that adds deckbuilding to the golfing mix. The Early Access Trailer shows off some of the crazy gameplay this mix creates. We have some more details, because that's par for the course:
Golfie is a brand-new take on mini golf featuring a fun and tactical deck-building system where shot cards are collected and combined with wild results. Players will need to use all of their skill to beat courses of 18 procedurally-generated holes spread across four distinct biomes.

Each run in Golfie requires strategy, planning, and skill by building unique decks which can unlock incredible new ways to play. Card powers can vary from increasing the distance or elevation of a standard shot, through to out-of-this-world abilities and power-ups which can be combined to dazzling effect. But be careful: finish over par or fall into traps and players will lose energy – and once it’s depleted, the run is over.

Steam April Bestsellers

This page on Steam has links to where you can purchase any or all of the top-selling titles that launched on Steam in April. There are also links to the new free-to-play games that attracted the most engagement for the month. This all ties into a new Top Releases of April 2022 Blog Post. Here's part that credits the listed games for their variety:
With each month's Top Release list, we continue to be amazed by the variety and originality that is incorporated into well-known genres and franchises. Whether slicing by theme, mechanic, genre, or aesthetic, April's Top Releases prove yet again that players appreciate this variety with some extra variety on top. Looking for a game within a game? April has horse racing in Winning Post 9 2022, baseball in Out of the Park Baseball 23, and pachinko in Peglin. How about a journey to fabled fantasy universe? Visit Arrakis in Dune: Spice Wars, a Galaxy Far Far Away in LEGO® Star Wars™: The Skywalker Saga, or the fabled Round Table in King Arthur: Knight's Tale. April may have failed to settle the age-old question of “What’s the BEST genre?”, but players seem to be pretty happy that the debate will go on.

Sniper Elite 5 Released

Rebellion announces that Sniper Elite 5 has hit its target date, and the sharpshooting sequel is now available for Windows via Steam as well as for Xbox and PlayStation. This puts you behind enemy lines in World War II in a test of your stealth, marksmanship, and stomach for X-ray views of internal organs being destroyed. All three of those elements are amply shown off in the Launch Trailer. Apparently the game was pre-sold at some point on the Epic Games Store, as the Rebellion Help Centre explains: "If you have pre-ordered through Epic, you should have received a refund - if not, please reach out to them here" (thanks Reddit). Here's word on this chance to be the soldier who saved D-Day:
Sniper Elite 5 takes place in the events around D-Day in France, 1944, as our hero Karl Fairburne joins a covert US Rangers operation to weaken the Atlantikwall fortifications along the coast of Brittany. There he makes contact with French Resistance, and they begin to uncover a secret Nazi plot that threatens to turn the tide of the war back in the Nazi’s favor: Operation Kraken. It is now down to Karl to reveal exactly what the Axis forces are planning and end Operation Kraken, and the mastermind behind it, Abelard Möller, before it can be launched.

Rebellion CEO, Jason Kingsley, said, “We are extremely proud to be releasing Sniper Elite 5 today and cannot wait for players to get their hands on the game. The franchise continues to go from strength to strength and the entire team at Rebellion has done a fantastic job to create the best game in the series to date. We are particularly proud of the new Invasion Mode which we think will be a real fan favorite. The tension and challenge that the invasion creates really intensifies and heightens the gameplay experience.”

The Quarry Multiplayer Delay

A tweet from Supermassive Games announces a delay to the launch of multiplayer support for The Quarry. A few weeks ago it was announced that development on the survival/horror game was complete, and it was on track to launch on Steam on June 10th. Now we learn that this involved a slight exaggeration, as multiplayer support will actually arrive about a month later, on July 8th. In the meantime, we have a new Official Gameplay Overview Trailer where Will Byles of 2K games discusses the project and shows off gameplay. Here are the details on the setback for multiplayer support translated from an all-caps graphic to more user-friendly sentence case text:
The wait is almost over, and the team and I are so excited for you to get your hands on The Quarry in just over two weeks! The game will launch on June 10 with local couch co-op and movie mode alongside the single-player campaign.

However, we've made the difficult decision to delay the online multiplayer mode to deliver the best possible experience for you. It's not a long wait though - online multiplayer will be added via an update by July 8th.

We appreciate your understanding and hope you're as excited as we are for launch in just 15 days!

The Blood Bowl Website is now counting down the minutes until June 1st. Op Ed

  • PC Gamer - I'm begging space sims to stop turning themselves into shooters.
"But those are first-person shooters, not grand galactic simulations. When a game can render up hundreds, thousands, even quintillions of worlds but can't imagine a scenario where you don't view them through iron sights, it feels like not only a failure of imagination, but a lack of confidence in the galaxy you've created. Do EVE's hypercapitalist fleet commanders really need to be poking each other with shotguns?"

etc.

Out of the Blue

Well, my efforts at sighting the cygnets that recently hatched have not been successful so far. There's a land-bridge between the pond where the swans swim and the marsh where they nest. I've walked it a couple of times now, but they are no longer hanging out near the nest, which would be pretty visible. Instead they are on the farthest possible point on the opposing "shore" of the marsh, which is much too distant to be able to spot little babies. This may persist, but I don't think it's going to be too long before the parents lead the brood into the pond where we'll have a much easier time checking them out.

Sheltered Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.
