Path of Exile: Siege of the Atlas Released

The Siege of the Atlas expansion is out for Path of Exile as the latest new content for Grinding Gears' free-to-play action/RPG. The Windows and macOS editions are now available the official website, while console gamers must wait until February 9th. Check out the Official Trailer for a look, or the Patch Notes for an outline of all that this brings. A recent announcement outlined what this brings to the party:
Siege of the Atlas Content and Features:

  • Updated Atlas: The end-game Atlas of Worlds has been simultaneously simplified and also made deeper. The region system has been removed, and individual Atlas Passive Trees have been replaced by one gigantic Atlas-wide passive tree which creates a more flexible way for players to engage in the content they like best while also increasing its challenge and reward.
  • Four Pinnacle Bosses: The new storyline is capped with four new Pinnacle Bosses, ultimate boss fights for players seeking additional challenges. These bosses can potentially drop a selection of extremely valuable new unique items.
  • Endgame Item Crafting: Players can master the Eldritch Implicit Modifier system to improve their best items. New currency items allow them to craft powerful new implicit modifiers onto items that enable new build opportunities.
  • Archnemesis League: Players can collect modifiers to use on Petrified Monsters that are encountered throughout Wraeclast in order to create their own mini-boss fights. Each modifier provides a reward and a monster behavior and will stack in subsequent fights to create progressively more dangerous and rewarding encounters. These modifiers can be combined to create recipes for even more challenge and reward.
  • Game Balance Improvements: Spellcasters and Archers have been targeted with a massive selection of balance buffs, so that they are even more competitive with Path of Exile's best builds.

Google Stadia Pivots

A report on Business Insider (may require registration or subscription) says Google is refocusing Stadia from a standalone game streaming service to an online partner for others. The struggling cloud service has already apparently hitched its wagon to Peloton (not exactly a rising star itself lately, though that may be changing) as well as gaming partners like Capcom and Bungie. The takeaway presented by The Verge is that such partnerships are now a priority for the service, so it may not have the future as a consumer gaming platform Google imagined. It reports Google spokesperson Patrick Seybold responded to inquiries with this statement:
We announced our intentions of helping publishers and partners deliver games directly to gamers last year, and have been working toward that. The first manifestation has been our partnership with AT&T who is offering Batman: Arkham Knight available to their customers for free. While we won’t be commenting on any rumors or speculation regarding other industry partners, we are still focused on bringing great games to Stadia in 2022. With 200+ titles currently available, we expect to have another 100+ games added to the platform this year, and currently have 50 games available to claim in Stadia Pro.

Blue Fire: Void Maker

Blue Fire: Void Maker is now available on Steam, allowing players to create and share 3D platforming levels in a free spin-off of Blue Fire. Here's a launch trailer showing off what to expect. Here's word on the new game and the original:
Blue Fire: Void Maker allows players to create and share challenging Void platforming levels. Let imaginations run wild designing hardcore, epic or silly levels and sharing them with others. Players do not need to own the original Blue Fire to play the spinoff, while those who own Blue Fire will automatically see Blue Fire: Void Maker appear in their Steam Library.

In Blue Fire players embark on an extraordinary adventure through the desolate kingdom of Penumbra to discover the hidden secrets of this long-forgotten land. Explore mystical temples, where players will need to master the art of movement to survive increasingly difficult 3D platforming challenges. Along the adventure, players will slash their way through diverse adversaries, encounter survivors, collect valuable items, take on strange quests and more.

Out of the Blue

So today marks the start of the Winter Olympics. This means things are already underway, since these are taking place in Beijing, where it's basically tomorrow already. MrsBlue and I discovered this when we came across some live figure skating when flipping channels late last night. Long ago I learned that I inevitably end up watching more of the games that I think I will. Now that I've accepted that, I probably won't watch any. Except of course, for curling. Who doesn't love curling?
