Sony Acquires Bungie

Bungie announces it is being acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment as the latest battle in a console war that heated up when Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard a couple of weeks ago. Sony's perspective on the sale, reportedly worth $3.6 billion, can be found on the SIE Blog. Interestingly, Bungie has been in bed with all the players in this story at one point, having signed a 10-year partnership with Activision in 2010 and previously having been owned by Microsoft from 2000 until 2007. Here's word on why Bungie feels its third marriage is true love:
In SIE, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart. Like us, SIE believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.

Shadow Warrior 3 in March

An announcement on Steam confirms the rumored March release for Shadow Warrior 3. This specifies March 1st as the release date that was promised when a delay was announced in October. In an unfortunate twist, the announcement also mentions the new voice of Lo Wang the same day we reported the passing of the original. Here's word:
Finely sculpted, athletic developer Flying Wild Hog and their personal trainer Devolver Digital have announced Shadow Warrior 3, a stunning new entry in the global best-selling franchise, will launch its barrage of over-the-top weapons and offbeat humor on March 1 for PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Pre-orders are now open and include the exclusive Koromodako Katana - a weapon so great they gave it eight legs. Console owners will also receive Flying Wild Hog’s 2013 Shadow Warrior and Shadow Warrior 2 for free.

In addition, the team is excited to reveal that actors Mike Moh, Andromeda Dunker, and SungWon Cho have joined the cast as the new voices of Lo Wang, Motoko and Zilla, alongside the returning Alex Dobrenko as Hoji.

WoW Adding Cross-Faction Instances

Dogs and cats! Living together! Blizzard announces some form of detente has overtaken Azeroth. Word is it is working on cross-faction instances where Alliance and Horde players can drop their differences in World of Warcraft:
I am pleased to announce that we are working on adding the ability for Alliance and Horde players to form premade parties together for dungeons, raids, and rated PvP. There have been two decades’ worth of code and content crafted with the assumption that parties can only have players of a single faction, and while we want to make this feature available as soon as possible, the extent of the change means that it couldn’t be ready in time for the upcoming Eternity’s End content update. Instead, we are planning to test and release it as part of a subsequent 9.2.5 update. We’re eager to hear your feedback about the details we’re sharing today and on the details of our implementation when this feature becomes available to the Public Test Realm following the release of Eternity’s End.

New Single-Player Gwent This Year

CD Projekt RED announces plans to release a new Gwent game later this year, reports IGN. While the original Gwent is a Witcher-inspired multiplayer game, the new installment in the card-based strategy series will be single-player, and may not connect to The Witcher:
Project Golden Nekker will be something else entirely according to Gwent Comms Lead Paweł Burza: “It’s not another Witcher Tales [game] but something different,” he said. “We’re aiming to provide a captivating single-player for players who prefer it over competitive multiplayer Gwent.”

Although this is the first time we've learned that it's an entirely new game, CD Projekt Red has been quietly teasing the project for several months, dropping hints on Gwent streams and community podcasts.

Worms NFTs

Worms don't have toes, but Team17 announces it is dipping its toe into the NFT waters with MetaWorms NFTs. Worms don't have hands either, but this is not stopping them from reaching into your wallet with this new entry in the NFT art market. Word is these NFTs will exist on a "side-chain of the Ethereum mainnet" which will reduce their environmental impact: "Crucially, this enables the creation of environmentally friendly NFTs that offer substantial reductions to the amount of energy used per transaction - The cost of minting 100,000 NFTs on Reality Gaming Group's sidechain uses the same energy as the average ANNUAL kettle usage of just 11 households." On a related note, voice artist Troy Baker tweets that he's no longer participating in an announced NFT scheme. He also apologizes for hating by calling his critics haters:
Thank you all for your feedback and patience. After careful consideration, I’ve decided to not continue the partnership with VoiceVerseNFT. Intentions aside, I’ve heard you and apologize for accusing anyone of “hating” just by simply disagreeing with me.

Alice TV Show Plans

The Hollywood Reporter has details on plans to adapt American McGee's Alice as a TV series. The show-runner will be David Hayter, but Linda Lavin is apparently not involved (RIP Vic Tayback). Hayter is probably most familiar to gamers as the English voice of Solid Snake, but he is also an accomplished writer for the big and small screen. Here's word on this mix of creative influences:
The TV adaptation will begin after Alice returns from the trip the Looking-Glass, her house is burnt down and her parents have died in the fire. Alice is the only survivor of the terrible accident. After repeated attempts at suicide, she gets locked up inside a mental institution and is slowly wasting away there before she is summoned to Wonderland again by the White Rabbit.

But this time it’s a Wonderland gone seriously bad and gory. The only chance for Alice to restore her peace of mind and find out more about the death of her parents is to fight through Wonderland and free it from the evil powers.

RIP Lo Wang

A post on Facebook announces the passing of John William Galt, actor and voice artist (thanks Lee). John's IMDb Page shows he voiced video game characters in games like Deus Ex, Daikatana, and Prey. He's best known as the voice of protagonist Lo Wang in the first three Shadow Warrior games. Here's a post from his son, Geoff Galt, a voice artist in his own right:
My Dad passed away last night. He stopped breathing in the middle of routine care, in his own bed, surrounded by family. He was taken to a Farmers Branch hospital, where emergency medical personnel did everything they could. It was pretty clear Dad was ready to go. He's off on a new adventure.

Out of the Blue

Wow, this was yet another amazing weekend of playoff football. The brilliance of these games will make it that much harder to put up with a two-week wait for the single game that remains in the season. But that's about the only thing to complain about. These games couldn't have been more suspenseful and dramatic if they were scripted by Hollywood writers. Just awesome.
