Diablo III Darkening of Tristram Returns

Blizzard announces the Darkening of Tristram is returning to darken the doorstep of Diablo III in a limited time event. Word is: "Whether you’re a series veteran craving nostalgia, or a newcomer hungry for your first taste of the franchise’s past, this annual loving homage to the earliest days of Diablo is for you." The post offers more details on what to expect, and the following schedule:
Exclusive rewards and challenging enemies await you, but they won’t last forever! The cultists will appear on December 31 at 4 p.m. PST, and the portal opens January 3 at the same hour. Both parts of the event end January 31 at 4 p.m. PST.

Fortnite Outage

Users have been unable to login to play Fortnite for several hours today. Those keeping tabs on the battle royale should watch the Fortnite Status Twitter for updates. The latest tweet from a few hours ago says about the same as the couple that preceded it:
We’re continuing to work on a fix that will bring Fortnite back online and appreciate everyone’s patience.

Fortnite game servers are currently offline while we investigate a solution to stability issues, and we’ll provide another update as more info is available.

Into the Black

I have an early appointment tomorrow. I'm not sure exactly how this will go, but I can't rule out the possibility this will delay the morning update. Just a heads-up and apology in advance if there is a delay.

Get Salt and Sanctuary for Free

Epic Games' 15 days of holiday giveaways will soon draw to a close, but there are still a few freebies to be had. Today's is Salt and Sanctuary, a 2D action/RPG from Ska Studios and Devoured Studios. As before, this will be yours to keep as long as you claim it before the next giveaway begins at 11:00 am EST tomorrow. Here's the pitch to see if you want to part with zero dollars for this one:
Explore a forsaken land
A doomed sailor is shipwrecked on an uncharted island. In fog-shrouded valleys, where grinning, mossy corpses cling to rusted arms, shambling figures begin to stir. Beneath crumbling, salt-worn structures, labyrinthine passageways lead to unspeakable evil, long forgotten by man.

Prevail in an unforgiving world
Salt and Sanctuary seamlessly combines fast, brutal, and complex 2D combat with richly developed RPG mechanics. Discover, craft, and upgrade over 600 weapons, armor pieces, spells, and items as you explore a cursed realm of forgotten cities, blood-soaked dungeons, desecrated monuments, and the fallen lords they once celebrated.

Out of the Blue

I'm feeling better after my bout with food poisoning or its equivalent. But I'm feeling saddened as well at yesterday's news that John Madden died. I saw one of those data harvester memes on Facebook recently asking who is the most famous person you've ever spoken with. I pondered this a while. I've been lucky enough to chat with many professional musicians over the years, but none of them are particularly household names. I feel like I am forgetting someone, but the best answer I can recall is John Madden. It was when I worked at MTV (hence the musician conversations) and he was just standing in the lobby, probably waiting for a limo (or knowing him, his bus). I am a New Yorker born and bred, and we don't generally hassle celebrities. But I was such a big fan I had go over an apologetically say so. Coach Madden was clearly a very reserved guy IRL, but he was nice about it and seemed to appreciate that I knew to make it quick and leave him be. Anyway, now that I've made it all about me (his passing just days after this recollection was weird), I'll say he had a tremendous impact (bam!) on the world of football broadcasting. He greatly enhanced the role of a football analyst to both explain and entertain. Elevating both of sides of that job at the same time is amazing, and he's influenced a whole generation of broadcasters since. It's enough to make you forgive him for his role in legitimizing lite beer. R.I.P. Coach.

Obituary: Harry Reid, a longtime US senator from Nevada and former Democratic leader, dies at 82.
