Legacy Virtual Sales Soar

The Gala Games Website shows many of the virtual deeds for Legacy have already sold out. We just learned that this game designed by Peter Molyneux and 22cans was fully embracing blockchain technology, and the cash has already started flowing in. Rock Paper Shotgun did the math for us, calculating that the virtual land sold so far took in over 14,000 Ethereum, which is over USD$53 million. Word is the most expensive item was a London plot that sold for almost $900K. There's an interview with Molyneux on The Verge illustrating why blockchain and the famed designer are a marriage made in heaven:
But what I am immensely proud of is if you make something in your world and you then trade it to someone else, that item that you make, whether it be a building, whether it be a worker, will carry with it all the benefits that you imbued in it. And I think that’s what’s really exciting for me is that the things you acquire on the blockchain will make your world a better place. If you take a worker and you put that worker to work in a mine, over time, that worker will become an expert miner. And then if you take the worker and put him to work in the pub as a landlord, he’ll become an expert landlord / miner. And that sort of experience flows through the whole of Legacy. It’s an all-connected system.

Virginie Haas Leaving Ubisoft

Speaking of Ubisoft, journalist Stephen Totilo tweets that Virginie Haas is leaving the company, where she had been serving a Chief Studios Officer reporting directly to CEO Yves Guillemot. Ubisoft has been embroiled in a high-profile harassment scandal, but no explanation for the departure besides a desire "to pursue other activities" is offered at this time. Here's word:
Virginie Haas is leaving Ubisoft. Employees were informed today. She'd assumed the role of chief studios officer, reporting to CEO Yves Guillemot, on Sept 1, 2020.

In her email to employees she said she was leaving "to pursue other activities"

Arguably the second most powerful person at Ubisoft. Gone after 16 months in the role.

PR:"Ubisoft thanks Virginie for her contribution and wishes her every success in the future. The company is well on its way to appointing her successor. In the interim, the senior team she was in charge of will ensure the continuity and seamless execution of the current projects"

System Shock Remake Next Year

Prime Matter announces it is publishing the remake of System Shock that's in the works at Nightdive Studios. The news includes a 2022 release window, which is a delay from plans to release the game this past summer. The project has survived a couple of previous snags, as it was delayed to 2018 shortly after being Kickstarted in 2016. By 2018 development needed a reset. A Kickstarter Update from February said late summer 2021 was the target, and offered a playable demo, which is still available. There's also an early adopter bonus, which is a free copy of System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition. Here's the deal on deal:
Set on an abandoned space station, players have to survive a hostile environment and overcome SHODAN (Sentient Hyper-Optimised Data Access Network), a malevolent AI hellbent on humanity’s destruction.

The new System Shock is a fully-fledged remake of the groundbreaking 1994 original, pairing its beloved core gameplay with all-new HD visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface and remastered sounds & music.

The global publishing and distribution agreement will bring System Shock to PC and consoles next year.

Out of the Blue

A tweet from John Romero notes that today is the 31st anniversary of Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons, which launched on December 14, 1990. According to Wikipedia, the success of this three-part platformer convinced the team to quit their jobs at SoftDisk and form id Software. So, without this game there would be no id, no DOOM, no Quake, and (sob) no Blue's News. Happy birthday Commander. Update: Thanks Kxmode for pointing to the Commander Keen Complete Pack on Steam.

Obituary: Dragon Ball Voice Actor And Narrator Joji Yanami Dies At 90.

Keen Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

Thanks Max.
