PES Becomes eFootball

Konami announces that eFootball is the new official title of the series formerly known as Pro Evolution Soccer (PES). This will be free-to-play, and will support crossplay for all platforms. There's a roadmap showing this will first roll out in early (northern) autumn and new features will be added into the winter. Here's the Official Reveal Trailer and here's a description:
It all began with the implacable determination to create a revolutionary soccer platform.
Our ambition was to recreate the perfect soccer environment, from the grass on the field, to the players' movement, all the way to the crowds in the stadium.
To this end, we decided to create a new soccer engine with a newly built animation system and revamped game commands.
The final result was even more impressive than we had originally conceived.
We went beyond the border of PES, into a new realm of virtual soccer.
To signal this new era, we have decided to part ways with our beloved PES brand and rename it "eFootball™"!
Now we hope that you can enjoy this brand-new soccer experience that eFootball™ has to offer.

New World Beta Bricking 3090 GPUs? [Updated]

A thread on Reddit has reports from gamers who have found their RTX 3090 graphics cards bricked after playing the closed beta of New World, Amazon's upcoming MMORPG. Sorting through them it seems the problem may primarily affect EVGA 3090s. There's no official response to this situation, but it may be wise for 3090 owners to hold off on trying the beta until what's going on is better understood. Unless you want to risk sell your remaining kidney to buy a new 3090. Thanks Windows Central via Simon and OmegaFoRCe. Update: Windows Central now has this follow-up from EVGA on the situation:
An EVGA representative provided the following comment: "At the moment we are dealing with specific problems, if it is a problem really confirmed we will inform and inform you in our EVGA forums on our website." The linked forums contain instances of users discussing New World EVGA RTX 3090 issues.

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 Adds Free Content

A new free update called Butcher's Banquet is now available for Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 on all platforms. CI Games calls this a "massive" content update. Here's a Butcher’s Banquet Trailer, and here's some fresh meat on what's being referred to as an expansion:
Featuring an all-new expansive region, ‘Butcher’s Banquet’ takes place in a stunning desert-like area, complete with luscious oases, dramatic waterfalls, and mysterious temples. And whilst it might be especially picturesque, make no mistake - it’s certainly no holiday destination. Following the recent turmoil in Kuamar - the setting of SGW Contracts 2’s main campaign - new threats have been allowed to surface, the most dangerous of which is Mahmoud Zarza... aka ‘The Butcher’.

The new expansion builds on all the elements players loved about the base game, including the 1000m+ extreme-range sniping, next-gen graphics, more intelligent NPCs, and the most lethal array of weapons yet. The challenging sniper game is set in Kuamar, a lawless region of the Middle East, located along the Lebanese and Syrian borders. Players take on the role of Raven, Contract Sniper Assassin, and are tasked with toppling a brutal dictatorship by completing a series of replayable missions that can be approached in a number of ways. SGW Contracts 2 features large-scale sandbox maps, a variety of side missions and objectives, realistic weapons and gadgets, and a range of unlockable skills and equipment.

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR Will Feature LPGA

Electronic Arts announces that EA SPORTS PGA TOUR will include licensed LPGA women's golf. What platforms the golf simulation will come to when this tees off in the spring are not yet revealed, so this may turn out to be console-only news. Here's a bit of the new announcement:
Today, Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) and the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) announced the next phase of their long-term partnership with plans to bring the LPGA Tour, the longest-running women’s sports association; The Amundi Evian Championship, one of its five major championships; and more female golfers to EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™. For the first time, the LPGA Tour will be experienced in high-fidelity on next-generation consoles and will feature a wide breadth of women’s golfing representation. In Spring 2022, all players will be able to tee-off as a female golfer at the truest representation of the Evian Resort Golf Club in Évian-les-Bains, France, thanks to the power of EA’s Frostbite™ game engine.

“We’re thrilled that the LPGA Tour is coming back to EA SPORTS PGA TOUR especially with the inclusion of a major global tournament like The Amundi Evian Championship,” said Brian Carroll, the LPGA’s senior vice president of global media distribution. “EA SPORTS has done a great job in continuing to expand female representation in the various modes throughout the game and featuring women’s golf in an authentic and modern way.”

Game Item Exchange Service

Promising this is the "future of game monetization," Playthora is a new service offering virtual item exchanges in video games. Most games that disallow item trading or sales do so via term of service. The new service claims to be "fully legal" nonetheless, and it's based in France where the Napoleonic Code was invented, so…? Actually it sounds like this works through developer/publisher cooperation, and will require implementation in individual games:
Playthora, a small team from France has officially launched their platform enabling game developers worldwide to implement digital item second hand markets into their games. Playthora does this in a fully legal manner, letting users trade their game skins or collectibles freely in the supported games. The platform is backed by insurance giant AXA and aims to give players the freedom to do whatever they want with their virtual items without having to resort to the black and grey market.

Playthora is a digital platform that gives players the ability to recycle cash back or trade their skins, accessories, stickers and more in a fully legal and game-compliant way.

Sphere - Flying Cities Announced

Publisher Assemble Entertainment announces Sphere - Flying Cities, a sci-fi city building game in the works at Hexagon Sphere Games for release on Steam Early Access later this year. As seen in the Announcement Trailer, this involves creating floating cities, the long-standing dream of urban planners and architects everywhere. Here's an explanation of why:
In the not-so-distant future, Earth’s moon has been struck by a massive asteroid. With the fallout rendering the terrestrial surface uninhabitable, the ecosystem of the planet collapses. Facing complete annihilation, humanity makes one final and desperate attempt to survive — thanks to newly-created anti-gravity technology, the first (and possibly last) faction of flying cities ascends as the ultimate bastion of the human race.

As Commander, you’ve been granted an impossible task: rebuild, restructure, and protect the last of society in an uninhabitable environment. Your primary weapon and invaluable tool? An anti-gravity device you’ll use to navigate the upper atmosphere and the daunting unknown. Stay vigilant, as each decision could have ghastly consequences; be prepared to lay it all on the line to succeed, else risk losing everything you worked for.

Out of the Blue

Hey! Frans' new tag can also apply to the sports spoilers I've been asked to avoid. So, congratulations to the Milwaukee Bucks and their fans on winning their first NBA championship in 50 years! Now I'll stop getting irate letters from pro athletes and sports teams complaining about my failures in acknowledging their accomplishments.
