Chris Avellone Files Libel Suit

Game writer Chris Avellone has filed a libel lawsuit over sexual misconduct allegations that surfaced against him one year ago (thanks D.M. Schmeyer via Gamasutra). Just yesterday we mentioned a few posts by Chris addressing the situation, and clearly these were related to the lawsuit. The defendants are listed as Karissa Barrows, Kelly Bristol, and 100 Jane Does, and the complaint includes a demand for jury trial. Part of it alleges conspiratorial behavior:
Avellone is informed and believes, and based thereon alleges, that at all times herein mentioned, each unnamed Defendant was the agent of the other named Defendant(s) herein, and at all times were and are acting within the purpose and scope of such agency, and with the permission and consent of his/her/its named co-Defendant(s) with knowledge, authorization, permission, consent, and/or subsequent ratification and approval of each co-Defendant. Avellone is further informed and believes, and based thereon alleges, that each named and unnamed Defendant knowingly and willfully conspired and agreed among themselves to deprive Avellone of his rights and to cause the damages described herein.

In this video Tom discusses various rumors he's heard over the years about Grand Theft Auto VI. Previous speculation about a new installment in the open-world crime series suggest it will be set in the 1980s. According to Tom's sources, however, the game may be a recreation of Vice City set in the present day. He does admit that this is not in his wheelhouse: "Of course, I'm not known for GTA 6 news, so take all this information with a grain of salt." Continue here to read the full story.

Shadow of the Road Looms

Indie publisher Super.com announces a partnership with Another Angle games for Shadow of the Road, a steampunk tactical/RPG set in an alternate-history feudal Japan. Another Angle is an alliterative development studio formed by former CD PROJEKT RED and People Can Fly developers with experience working on AAA titles including The Witcher III and Outriders. Here's the angle:
Shadow of the Road is the company’s first title and features a rich setting based on real history, a deep cast of believable and interesting characters, and riveting, calculated combat. Strategy and tactics work hand in hand as players will need to manage the interpersonal relationships and goals of each team member while also engaging in turn-based, tactical combat. In a world filled with rogue samurai, evil corporations, and mystical demons, only the most cunning of battlefield commanders will emerge victoriously.

Set in the Boshin War era of Feudal Japan, Shadow of the Road drops players into a land torn apart by war. The forces of the Tokugawa Shogunate clash with Imperial armies throughout the land, with mass losses of life plaguing both sides. However, this battle isn’t as simple as one side against the other, as the mythical demons known as Yokai coupled with the Steampunk machinations of the dastardly East Nippon Company make the battlefield a far deadlier and more complex arena. It’s Samurai vs. Soldier, Demon vs. Spider-mech in a battle for control of the Japanese islands!

On AI Voice Acting

There's an interesting article on Game Rant discussing the use of AI to create voice acting for video games (thanks Max). This is based on questions raised by A Night to Remember, a modification released earlier this year for The Witcher 3. The mod uses AI to create new dialogue from the game's original voice actors. Much like the use of CGI to recreate the appearance of dead or aged actors in movies, this raises concerns about the impact of computers on the future of the performing arts. Here's a bit:
In the case of Nicich340, the mod developer used a readily available software called CyberVoice to create the dialogue in “A Night to Remember.” There are multiple companies that create what some call “voice parodying” technologies. While developing The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian Entertainment is using Sonantic to create AI-generated voices as temporary placeholders for real actors. But there may come a time when the technology isn’t used solely for placeholders, but for replacements.

The greater a voice actor’s body of work, the easier it is for AI to parse and replicate that person’s voice. So it may be the most successful actors who find themselves being outsourced to AI. However, this worry is similar to that of screen actors when CGI started being used in films to recreate deceased actors or make older performers appear younger. So far, use of that technology has been constrained to a handful of cases and has not threatened the livelihoods of real people. Hopefully, the same will be true for voice acting.
