Get Surviving Mars for Free

Surviving Mars is now available for free on the Epic Games Store, offering the Windows and macOS sci-fi city builder from publisher Paradox Interactive and developer Haemimont Games. This allows you to build a mars colony by sciencing the poop out of things, and hopefully using the poop to grow potatoes. As usual this will be yours to keep if you get it before next Thursday when the next giveaway will take its place. Epic also reveals that next freebie will be The Fall, and action/puzzle game which was released in the spring, back in 2014. If you find Surviving Mars is already in your Epic library, that's because it was also a giveaway back in October. Here's more on Surviving Mars:
Surviving Mars is a sci-fi city builder all about colonizing Mars and surviving the process. Choose a space agency for resources and financial support before determining a location for your colony. Build domes and infrastructure, research new possibilities and utilize drones to unlock more elaborate ways to shape and expand your settlement. Cultivate your own food, mine minerals or just relax by the bar after a hard day’s work. Most important of all, though, is keeping your colonists alive. Not an easy task on a strange new planet.

There will be challenges to overcome. Execute your strategy and improve your colony’s chances of survival while unlocking the mysteries of this alien world. Are you ready? Mars is waiting for you.

Get Metro 2033 for Free

Metro 2033 is currently available for free on Steam (the original, not the remake). If you find you already have this in your Steam library, that's because it was a Steam giveaway in 2018. The Redux version may also be in your Epic Games Store library, as it was a giveaway there in December. Here's a refresher on 4A Games' near future post-apocalyptic shooter:
Set in the shattered subway of a post apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033 is a story of intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands.

In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.

The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside.

CIG and Capcom Developers Pressured to Work Through Emergencies

Kotaku has a pair of reports on developers forcing employees to work through emergencies. One is based on translating this report in Japanese stating that Capcom is forcing employees to work at the office during the COVID-19 emergency, saying the company is fearful of allowing remote work following last year's data breach. This includes a response from Capcom saying it is concerned with employee wellbeing, and has implemented safety measures, including staggered hours, requiring masks and social distancing, and employee temperature checks. The other story reports that employees of Cloud Imperium Games in Texas working on Star Citizen were told to figure out how to keep working during the power outages cause by the devastating storm there. If they were unable to work, staff was to make up the lost time as soon as possible, or take it as PTO. The story contrasts this with assistance offered to employees of other area developers, which included emergency supplies and hotel accommodations. This generated the following response from CIG:
In response to employees’ criticisms, CIG provided Kotaku with a statement. “CIG is saddened to hear these allegations from the anonymous sources,” a company spokesperson said in an email. “Our staff’s safety and well-being are a priority to us at all times. The Austin offices have remained closed to general staff since the beginning of the pandemic, with teams working from home. In the immediate aftermath of the Texas storm, studio leadership reached out to all 100+ Austin employees through their managers and individually to offer support; and continues to do so with actionable assistance for all of those who were affected.”

Days of Heroes: D-Day Released

This is now available on Steam and is coming soon to the Oculus store. Either a Vive or a Rift headset is required. The Official Gameplay Trailer takes a look, showing support for locomotion and a scenario that seems reminiscent of Band of Brothers, albeit with low-poly graphics. Here's more of what developer Zen Apps Studios says about the game:
It’s the beginning of June 1944. Five years since the start of World War II, the Third Reich continues their occupation of Europe. Allied forces decide to open a so-called “second front” in Western Europe to turn the tides of war. Operation Overlord – the biggest landing operation in history – is about to start. You are among the soldiers about to change the fate of the world.

From two unique perspectives, experience the largest landing operation in martial history regarding the forces and means used. Take on the role of an airborne division jumper who descends into enemy territory to destabilize the enemy troops under the cover of night. Alternately, become a soldier beginning their heavy crossing of Omaha beach on D-Day.

Assemble Entertainment's Charity Initiatives

Assemble Entertainment announces a new slogan: "Assemble. Saving the World. Game by Game." This reflects a new focus of the German publisher to support chartable causes. The company plans to offer special "Save the World" editions of all future games, which will come with extra perks. They will cost approximately $10.00 more than the ordinary editions, and "a portion of the proceeds" will go to supported charities. The first four Save the World editions are already available on Steam: ENCODYA (10% of proceeds to Plan International), Endzone - A World Apart (One Tree Planted with every purchase), Leisure Suit Larry - Wet Dreams Dry Twice (two ShareTheMeal meals with every purchase), and Ultimate ADOM - Caverns of Chaos (10% of proceeds to International Agency for Research on Cancer). Interestingly, in each case the donation seems to be considerably less than the $10.00 premium. We've asked for clarity on that, but have not received a reply as yet. That said, the company's charity initiative is not just limited to these special game editions:
Assemble Entertainment’s corporate social commitment does not end with its special editions of games. Extensive charitable activities are also carried out internally within the “A-Team.” For each Assemble team member (26 total), a “godparenthood” has been formalized through Plan International, meaning over two dozen impoverished children and their families in 50 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America are sponsored directly through the program. Additionally, Assemble Entertainment carries out many local efforts, including regular donations and monetary support to Wiesbaden’s food banks and animal shelters. Assemble also directly supports the Zwerg-Nase Organization, a local hospital facility that houses disabled children and offers support for parents.

For Stefan Marcinek, Assemble Entertainment’s CEO and Founder, social commitment also means funding, supporting, and educating young “close to home” talent within the games industry. As such, Assemble Entertainment organizes GermanDevDays, the largest German-speaking developer conference in Germany, with over 1,200 attendees annually, many of which are students who are able to attend completely free-of-charge. Additionally, students have the opportunity to earn a GDD Award through the GDD Foundation, an effort dedicated to providing scholarships and mentoring services to budding talent in the German games industry. Taking place virtually in 2021, developers who attend GermanDevDays are able to submit their games for award consideration, network with industry professionals, attend workshops, and more.

Cafe Owner Simulator Announced

Cafe Owner Simulator is a new business sim in the works at developer Second Reality that's coming to Steam with a TBA release date. This is being published by RockGame, an associate of PlayWay, the first publisher you think of these days when a game has "simulator" in the title. As that title suggests, this sets up the player as the owner of a startup cafe, who builds the business from the ground up. This is played from a first-person perspective, as seen in the Announcement Trailer. Here's more:
The most important feature of Cafe Owner Simulator is the ability to “build” a restaurant business from the very beginning, taking into account such factors as: reputation, cleanliness of the establishment, comfort, smoke content in the premises, availability of leisure items, prices and quality of products, interior ...

You have the opportunity to purchase a damaged space, remove all the trash and start planning the interior and exterior.

Out of the Blue

In a recent news forum post Acleacius brought up a couple of questions about whether the way things work around here. As seen in this General Discussion thread (which is a much better place for such questions and comments), Frans responds with good news and bad news. Bad news first: One request was when a user logs in while viewing a forum thread with no comments that the user be returned to that same thread. This has come up before, but because of the way things work on the backend here, this is not really practical. The workarounds are to stay logged in between visits, or if that's not practical, to log in from the main page before visiting specific threads. Now the good news. The other request was to add the number of results returned by a search to the search results. This is a helpful change that was indeed possible, and Frans has now added that. So searching for something important, such as "chili" for example, now includes a line that adds "out of 142." Well now that I posted this, it will say "out of 143." Man! Even I'm surprised at how obsessed I am with chili! Thank you Acleacius for the suggestion. Thank you RedEye9 for posting it to the General Discussion Forum where Frans would notice it. And thanks, of course, to Frans, for once again improving how things work around here.

Obituary: Gordon Hall, Rockstar Leeds Founder, Dies At 51.

1 of 1 Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.
