Steam Game Festival: Autumn Edition Announced

Valve announces the Steam Game Festival: Autumn Edition will run from October 7-13, offering a follow up to their recent Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition. Like the Summer Edition, the Autumn Edition will offer playable demos to check out. But unlike the last go-round, which featured an impractical total of over 900 demos, the next one should be less of a circus based on a more restrictive set of qualifications for developers. Here's the plan:
The Steam Game Festival is a great opportunity to get your demo out in front of a large audience before your game launches. Much like we did with The Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition, there will be options to participate in additional features, including live streams and developer Q&As.

Demos will be eligible for the Autumn Edition if the game’s launch date is set between October 13th, 2020, and May 1, 2021. If your game is ineligible this time, don’t worry! We will be announcing details soon on future Steam Game Festivals for 2021.

G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout Announced

IGN has first details on G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout, a team-based third-person shooter that will be released for PC and consoles on October 13th. They have a Reveal Trailer and details on what to expect on the tie-in, which will be based more on the comic book series than the toys or cartoons:
Allowing you to play as 12 characters across Team Joe and Team Cobra, the game will feature an 18-mission campaign in single-player or local split-screen co-op and a variety of PvP multiplayer modes.

The campaign will be an original story based on 80s comics, taking you to Cobra Headquarters and the U.S.S. Flagg. Multiplayer will include Capture the Flag, Assault and King of the Hill modes.

The game seems to be taking something of a hero shooter template, with characters each coming with unique powers, but customisable weapons and looks. Confirmed playable characters include Duke, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, Destro, Roadblock, and Storm Shadow.

Metamorphosis Released

Metamorphosis is now available on and Steam, offering an action/adventure for Windows based on the Franz Kafka novella of the same name. The Release Trailer highlights the nightmarish story that involves waking up as a insect, which can make it difficult to wear your favorite shoes, among other problems. Here's a summary:
You wake up one morning to find that you are rather inconveniently transforming into a tiny bug, while your friend Joseph is being arrested for reasons unknown.

To save him and to find the answers you seek, you must embark on a journey through a world which, like yourself, has become twisted and unfamiliar.

What once seemed like mundane dwellings have become an expansive obstacle course, and now you’ll have to chart your path through the dingy nooks and crannies that exist within the cracks of civilization.

Here's a new Beta Release Trailer and here's how Midgar Studio describes the state of the game:
During this summer, Edge Of Eternity will go through very important steps. We have been in Early Access for nearly 20 months now and it has allowed the game to grow progressively into what it is today.

Our epic JRPG now represents more than 30 hours of gameplay, shared between six chapters (including Chapter 0 - Seed of Destruction, which serves as a prologue to the story). More than half of Daryon and Selene’s quest is already part of the game, and our small indie team is fully dedicated to deliver the final chapters over the next months!

Second Extinction Early Access Next Month

IGN has word that Early Access to Second Extinction is going to launch on Steam in early September offering the chance to put an end to the second coming of the dinosaurs. Meanwhile this post on Steam offers a trailer called Welcome to the War Effort with a look at a new community-centric game mode turning this into a cooperative venture. IGN has more details on that in a developer quote:
“The War Effort reflects the changes in the ongoing fight against the dinosaurs and ensures you’ll always have to stay on your toes. It’s a highly interactive, community-driven environment for players to fight in, letting us create new content that evolves over time,” said Second Extinction product owner Julianne Harty. “The War Effort is an integral part of how we’ll introduce new dinosaurs, missions, and more as a live service experience, and it’s a feature we’re excited to fully flesh out throughout early access.” As you can see in the trailer above, War Effort tallies the stats of player matches and uses them to alter the threat level for future matches, meaning you'll take on various challenging levels of dinosaurs.

BattleJuice Alchemist Announced

BattleJuice! BattleJuice! BattleJuice! Solo developer Alain Brunotte announces BattleJuice Alchemist, an action/RPG that will feature deck-building, third-person combat, and 80s synthesizers when it's released via Steam next year. Here's a Cinematic Trailer and a Gameplay Trailer, neither of which include even a trace of Michael Keaton. Here's more:
BattleJuice Alchemist has a dark but cartoonish look and feel to it while it sounds like Stranger Things with explosions. The game is mainly played in classic RPG top down view while close combat is fought in third person and dilated realtime. In these thrilling fights players must rely on a "deck" of flasks they draw from.

Fans of action RPGs of the early 2000s might be familiar to the interface of BattleJuice Alchemist: red globe to the left, blue globe to the right. Try to keep the red one full and empty the blue one for destruction. But there is more depth to the resource management of this game. The protagonist named Juice has access to a third resource, a white fluid that supercharges his abilites. Furthermore, his skills are determined by the alchemical flasks he currently has at hand. The skinny alchemist Juice is by far no Geralt von Riva. But being the nerdy type of guy does not stop him from throwing flasks at possessed animals, humans and even facing demons. All this takes place on beautiful procedurally generated maps.

Out of the Blue

Variety, among other outlets, is reporting that Sumner Redstone is dead at 97. Sumner was my boss on some level, as I was at MTV when it was acquired by Viacom. I never met the man personally, but have always been struck by an anecdote about him from someone who did. As mentioned in the obituary, he suffered serious burns in a hotel fire. The way the story was told to me, shaking with him was surprising by the hard-edged scars on his hands. His hands were scorched by the fire as he hung from a window ledge. His intense will to live that allowed him to hang on as his hands burned and his enormous success in life seemed to go hand-in-hand, so to speak. I always found this tale to be quite inspirational, as well as a bit intimidating.

Determined Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.
